How to Deal with Lack of Motivation - My 3 Simple Solutions

Hey everyone

Lately, I've been trying to address more mental health issues by sharing my daily routine for staying productive and how I personally deal with anxiety. Although these are not technical art tips, they still have relevance in how you get the energy to finish the job. If you've recently been feeling little to no motivation, this article might help you.

What is motivation?

Motivation is the driving force that compels us to take action. It's the internal energy that pushes us to achieve our goals, complete tasks, and engage in activities we find meaningful or necessary. Essentially, motivation is what gets us up in the morning and keeps us going throughout the day, whether we're pursuing a passion project, tackling everyday responsibilities, or overcoming challenges. It can stem from various sources, including personal interests, desires, needs, aspirations, or external incentives and rewards. In the context of creating art, motivation is especially crucial as it fuels the creative process, helping artists to start and continue their work even when faced with obstacles or creative blocks.

What are the most common causes of lack of motivation?

Tips

1. Negative Emotions Are Useful!: How many artists in history do you know that have become icons by portraying their pain? Negative emotions are often a rich source for creativity. Rather than avoiding them, channel these emotions into your art. This practice isn't about dwelling in negativity; it's about authenticity and exploring the depths of human experience.

For example, if you're wrestling with anger or sadness, let those emotions flow into your artwork. Create compositions where shapes, colors, and values reflect your current mood, regardless of whether they fit your "style." Perhaps tell short stories through your art where you can channel that anger or sadness. Many people will likely relate to you as well.

This approach can lead not only to profound and impactful art but also serve as a therapeutic process, helping you to confront and understand these complex feelings.

.

2. Work On Your Environment: Where you work matters significantly. Your creative space has a substantial influence on your artistic process. Keeping it organized is a good start, but it's also about crafting an environment that fuels your creativity.

For instance, you might surround yourself with inspiring art pieces, play music that sets the right mood, or even rearrange your workspace for a new perspective. I like to have a book or two around from artists I admire, listen to classical music and keep my workspace simple. Luckily, I work in front of a window, so I get a few minutes of sunlight each day. I truly love the sunlit moments of the day; they're one of the simplest ways to relax and "recharge batteries".

On a mental level, it involves cultivating a mindset that's receptive to new ideas and experiences. Try experimenting with your surroundings; a change in environment can sometimes spark a wave of fresh inspiration.

.

3. Sharing is Caring: Engaging with other artists and creative communities can be a game-changer. It's not just about making work-related connections; it's about exchanging ideas and gaining new insights. Participating in art shows, challenges, workshops, or online forums like our Patreon Discord can offer the support, motivation, and valuable feedback you need. This engagement can foster a sense of belonging and purpose in your artistic journey.

.

Conclusion

Motivation is a complex subject I often address by clearly defining my goals and having a balanced life that helps me take small steps towards those goals. This is challenging, but sometimes even that's not enough. I need to work on myself to find inspiration, even in places I dislike. I need to take care of the spaces where I work and also stay in touch with others, even if it takes some energy from my time. Sometimes, this brings a new perspective on ideas I had.
