Voiceover: Speed Up Process! - Designing Anthropomorphic Characters Out of Animals

A few weeks ago, I wrote an article about designing anthropomorphic characters out of things. Then, a patron named Mari dropped a comment, asking for animal examples instead of objects. So, in today's article, I'm excited to share my approach when that's the case.

Method 1: Animal Story

So I start by searching for references that depict interactions between animals, aiming to capture a scene or behavior that can be translated into a human-like narrative. This method lets me build stories or situations that anthropomorphic characters could represent, right? I encourage using any animal interaction as a foundation for character development, kind of like building a story behind those animals or that specific reference.

Method 2: Contrast in Shape, Color, or Values

When references with interesting interactions are scarce, I shift my focus to the visual distinctions between animals, such as differences in shapes, colors, or sizes. This approach is less about the interaction and more about creating contrast, like pairing a big black wolf with a small white one, to craft visually compelling characters that symbolize these differences. It's about making it different, focusing on how they look, how they can be different.

Method 3: Idea First, Animal Idea After

Sometimes, I reverse-engineer the process by starting with a character or story idea and then searching for animal traits that fit the concept. This was illustrated in my illustration titled "Yilted," where I combined the narrative of a jilted bride with the visual contrast of red and white, eventually choosing a white mantis to fit the character's narrative and visual theme. It's like, okay, I have an idea in mind, and I just search for animals that can fit the whole thing.

Execution

The execution of these designs focuses on matching the animal's gesture or essence in the character's posture and anatomy before proceeding to costume design, which complements the character concept. I aim to use a limited color palette and adjust shadowing according to the narrative setting. It's more like, how can you... What's the most iconic or simplest version in which you can reproduce this animal in the reference through the character anatomy or the character costume?

This process is dynamic and adapts to prevent monotony, ensuring each character captures the essence of its inspiration. For those interested in a deeper dive, I pretty much describe each of these processes in the Mastering Maestro tier, where I share full-length process videos and explanations on how I select and utilize references.
