'Innocent' Process Video & File - Using Food As Inspiration

Hey everyone, here is the full-length process video of "Innocent": https://youtu.be/jDmJL_L1PFI

Also! Here is the transcription of the video just in case you prefer the text version:

-----

Hey everyone, I hope you're doing great. Today, I want to talk about how I came up with "Innocent," my latest piece. It all started with a ground beef picture. The way the strips looked, their raw color, and texture got me thinking for a while. I figured using hair could capture this texture perfectly.

Lately, I've been into creating scenes with multiple characters. This time, pasta struck me as a good match, especially since I was feeling hungry. Imagining a pasta character next to a beef one seemed like a fun duo because of their similar stripey looks, even though their colors and shapes are a bit different.

For the beef character, I leaned towards making her look dangerous, maybe because of the butcher vibe or the red color. I thought about how these two could interact. It hit me they could be like mean girls, raw and unfiltered, making people a bit uncomfortable.

But I wanted their roles to be deeper than just attitude. I thought the beef character could have a backstory tied to danger, like a prisoner, which fits with the orange color, staying in the warm tone category. For the pasta character, turning her into a lawyer defending the beef character felt right, partly inspired by a scene from Better Call Saul that impressed me.

So, the beef character turned into this dangerous type, and the pasta character, her passionate lawyer. This contrast between their personalities sparked the idea for their interaction in my head.

Designing them, I stuck to three main colors for each, based on their references but added contrast to fit their narrative, like a uniform for the prisoner and a suit for the lawyer. Their outfits were straightforward, reflecting traditional roles but with a twist in their hair to emphasize the original food inspiration.

The illustration's focus was on making their hair stand out, matching the beef and pasta references. I kept the shadows simple, aiming for a more animated look to focus more on the ideas than detailed execution. This way, I can think up fun concepts anywhere and quickly bring them to life.

I hope this sheds some light on my process. Thanks for all your support. Check out the process video and PSD if you're curious. Got questions? Drop me a comment here, send a DM on Patreon, or hit me up on Discord. Thanks!
