Hey everyone
We've all been there: the render is fine, the line is clean, the colors are vibrant, but the character looks dead inside, lacking life and energy. In today's post, I'll give you some useful ways you can address this issue right away so your characters feel more alive than you.
Think about your character's background and pick one feeling that describes it well. For instance, 'sad'. I know it's hard but try to convey a sad expression instead of a neutral one. This straightforward trick might challenge you in capturing that expression with your technique, but I assure you the character won't look dead. There's nothing wrong with neutral facial expressions, but trying out this trick is to see if this might be why your characters don't seem alive, just to raise some awareness.
In my opinion, eyes are one of the strongest ways to convey life. One simple trick is to add what's commonly known as a 'highlight' or 'specular highlight'. This term is used to describe small, bright reflections of light on shiny surfaces like eyes. In anime and manga, these highlights are often exaggerated and stylized, appearing as multiple large and distinct shapes. They convey a variety of emotions and characteristics, such as innocence, vitality, or emotionality. While there isn't a unique term for the anime-style eye highlights, they're a recognizable feature of the genre's aesthetic.

Want your character to look at you with penetrating eyes? Here's a simple yet effective trick for conveying strong emotions: don't let the pupil touch the corners of the eye. This creates an intense look in your character's facial expression. The smaller the pupil, the more intense the look. You might see me using this approach when creating a character in ecstasy or in an action situation. It works the opposite way too; big pupils half-covered by the eyelid convey calmness and a more relaxed mood.

Last but not least is body language. How does an 'alive' gesture look? Similar to facial expressions, think about how your character's posture is influenced by their personality. If this approach still feels insufficient, consider how your character would react to a specific situation, the context of your art piece. Regardless of personality, there are simple body expressions we all have in casual situations. This might be more complex, but try making simple, small thumbnails as a quick practice for body language. Don't be afraid to exaggerate gestures. We're not after 'perfect anatomy' or 'right proportions' here, but the necessary amount of visual decisions to capture emotion through body gesture.

These thumbnail examples are from finished pieces, so they look cleaner, but they're just references for expressing through body language or gesture, not for clean rendering or accurate body proportions. Those are later concerns.

Conclusion
Many of these issues can mostly be addressed with 'context'. What is your character feeling? What should your character be doing or reacting to in the composition you are creating? Thinking about your character's motivation can be a starting point when approaching any of these tips. Try them out and let me know in the comments or on our Discord channel how it went!
