Patreon Newsletter #5: February!

Uh ohhhh! Love day is coming up! The one day of the year it's ok to eat chocolate over a candle while wearing lingerie made of roses! We love you Patrons! Will you be our Valentine?

SPOTIFY PLAYLISTS & MESSAGES!

Adal's February Playlist and message:

Hey you nasty lil' booty butts!

For recommendations this month:

1. for tv - Jemma and I caught up on Brooklyn 99! We just started Letterkenny which is so goddamn weird but I'm here for it. Infinity Train is rocking my world. Please check that out if you haven't yet!

2. for film - Haven't had a chance to see much but 1917 was really well done and worth a view if you can handle the anxiety.

3. for video games - Finished God of War just the other day! Going to play the new COD and then The Last of Us. I'm curious to play Bloodborne but it sounds like it might be a bit too punishing?

4. for board games - January was fairly non-stop so I haven't really had time to play much but I did just buy Escape From Iron Gate (made by The Escape Game which is a fantastic escape room chain) which I'm excited to dig into. Also while in Seattle I played something that game designer/wonderful friend, Paul Peterson is working on and I'm giddy for it to see the light of day!

5. for books - besides Exhalation by Ted Chiang which I recommended on the podcast, I absolutely loved Tom King's collected run on The Vision. Not a character I've ever cared about, but hot shit that was a fantastic story.

Just today I got back from a quick vacation with some friends (Hi Anne, Chris & Keith!) to Houston to play 4 Escape Rooms and I'd be foolish to not HIGHLY RECOMMEND Strange Bird's escape room/immersive theater piece: The Man From Beyond. They recently got ranked #3 Escape Room in the world so if you're ever in the area go check it out! https://strangebirdimmersive.com/

ALSO went to a tiki bar with some NASA folks called Lei Low and it's immediately one of my all time favorites. I may go back to Houston simply for their drinks. If you go hit me up and I'll tell you my favorite items on the menu!

Other updates are: Jemma and I have been planning a ton for our 2 weeks in Japan! If you have recs please let me know! We're doing 2 weeks and going to Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. I'm also working on 4 new projects that I hope folks get to enjoy soon but WHO KNOWS!

Here's my Spotify playlist! It's a mix of my favorite love songs and songs I hope to one day do a striptease to. Can you determine which is which? (Hint: Heart's - Alone is 10000% a striptease song) Also I correlate a lot of cheesy 80's songs with love so please forgive me!

For Feb I also wanted to just post a few sketches I love if you're ever looking for something to watch!

1. My favorite sketch from Sid Cesar: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNbT9Lf9xZo

2. One of my all-time favorite SNL sketches that I don't think ever gets mentioned. Super dumb simple premise, played perfectly: https://vimeo.com/154522723

Erin, my favorite season of love island was season 6. It’s what I started with but I loved it. I hated season 4! Literally had to stop. I did 6,5, 3, half of 4, and now 2.

I love Fry and Laurie, the people and the show. This is my all time favorite, which everyone should watch because it's absolutely brilliant. :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ij1pZvv9m0g

Claudia Hankin

I would die if JPC told me to

The other well known collection by Chiang is called "Stories of Your Life." It includes the story that inspired the movie Arrival, and is so incredibly written. Couldn't recommend it more.

And this pinnacle of silliness I first saw on my mom's A Bit of Fry and Laurie VHS: https://youtu.be/rvANydQppIo

Amanda Martyn

Great sketches! Hopping on the train with a couple of my faves. First, this Kids in the Hall classic (90s teen from Toronto, so this show was a big deal): https://youtu.be/_83MEuLoz9Y

Thank you!

Hey Riddle Riddle

I plan on reading more Chiang now!

Hey Riddle Riddle

Thank you! Yeah I’ve heard (mostly from David Chang) the 7/11’s are amazing

Hey Riddle Riddle

I’ll check it out!

Hey Riddle Riddle

Adal, since you're watching Brooklyn Nine Nine now I'm deeply concerned that you haven't seen Last Man on Earth (also on Hulu).

Rachel

When my friends and I were in Kyoto for three days, we always had our lunches from 7-11/convenience stores because the food was good, cheap, and everywhere, and we were always able to find a cute place nearby to sit and eat. So if you're setting aside some days just to explore, that's a low-key way to account for meals! Fushimi Inari outside of Kyoto is absolutely beautiful and worth spending a whole day at if you have the time.

Ted Chiang is legit my favorite author of all time. Exhalation is amazing, and written in such a way as to be accessible for basically everyone (collection of short stories). I would also recommend looking into the audiobook version- the readings are beautiful and Chiang discusses his inspiration for each story.

Hey Adal, I spent a couple weeks in Japan a couple years back, I stayed in Tokyo and Kyoto. Going to see the shrines is my recommendation, Meiji shrine is in like a different universe when you first get to the park. The trees there basically block out the city it’s awesome.

I love how Adal puts so much effort into these with stories and all sorts, and JPC just does things. Very good energy.

Saga Nørgaard

My favorite podcast lately is this one because you found my HR email from 2018 and read it

Darby Nicole Mishra

Hey someone recommended me Letterkenny recently and I just finished it, it's a great show! And everyone is annoyed with me quoting it. So good luck with that!

Hey Adal, Bloodborne can be punishing but it is totally worth getting through, especially to achieve each ending. I'd be happy to run with you through it.
