SPOTIFY PLAYLISTS & MESSAGES!
Adal's March Playlist and message:
Life be BONKERS. My Japan trip that Jemma and I have been planning for 6 months is CRUMBLING. I know this virus is very serious but will somebody please think of my trip??? If it doesn't happen we're looking to go elsewhere (Greece? Istanbul? Peru?) so let me know if you have a recommendation FOR ME on where to go for 2 weeks!
For recommendations this month:
1. for tv - what dominated the last few weeks for me is Love Is Blind on Netflix! With the Circle and now LIB, Netflix is crushing the reality game. This show has everything. Petty, awful people. 10 year age gaps. Petty, awful people. That's about it. Please watch it and then let's chat about how deliciously terrible it is. I think I need to start a reality show podcast in the coming months because it's what brings me the most joy as of late. ALSO, finally watched Ramy on HULU which is just terrific. A hilarious representation of young Muslim life in America and some truly groundbreaking episodes throughout. Also really dug season 2 of End of the Fucking World and a new show by that same director/creator, I'm Not Ok With This. Both on Netflix and both feature social outcast male/female teens who find fleeting comfort in each other and some violent/shocking moments. The creator seems to have a fetish for covering his female leads in blood and also has a hard on for showing how great his taste in music is, but that aside they're both great shows and good storytelling.
2. for film - Jemma and I are trying to watch all the Studio Ghibli movies because we have tickets to go to the museum in Tokyo (le sigh). We started with Grave Of The Fireflies and hoooo boy that's not a great one to start with. It's beautifully done but also maybe the saddest movie in the history of history. My Neighbor Totoro was up next and was a delight. Needed more Totoro and 100 times more Cat Bus but otherwise it was a great time. I'm curious to go see the Sonic movie but can't seems to bring myself to mouth those words.
3. for video games - I picked up Bloodborne based on people's comments last month and it is gorgeous and very addictive but I'd be lying if I said I've made it past the first check point after 3 hours of play. I beat Yoshi's Crafted World on Switch (two tongues way up!) and I'm about 5 hours into Hollow Knight which is way cooler than I gave it credit. This month I'm hoping to play The Last of Us, start Witcher 3 and maybe check out Spider-Man.
4. for board games - my biggest rec for this is going to check out the Chicago Board Game Cafe! It's been open for 2 weeks and I've already been 3 times. The inside reminds me of the Museum of Science and Industry: Streets of YesterYear exhibit where it's cobblstone streets and old timey business facades. The cafe has a Mead Hall which looks like something straight out of Harry Potter. There's gift shop with magic tricks, board games and comic books. There's an actual bank vault full of 300 different games you can sit and play. The cocktails are great, the food is outstanding. The basement has 2 escape rooms created by our own Sandy Weisz. GET YOUR ASS TO THIS CAFE and have a goddamn blast. I live about a block away so if you're there let me know and I'll try and come say hi (if I'm not already hanging out there) and Jemma is working there part time as a 'Game Concierge' where she walks around and will teach tables any of the games 'on tap' for the month so say hi to her if she's around! I recommend trying out the game Wavelength which is super fun with a group of friends or Pantone where you try and get people to guess a person/place/thing by arranging color swatches in 60 seconds.

5. for books - the past month I've read almost exclusively children's books (for a project) and graphic novels. The best being the Locke & Key books which are stellar.......the new show...not so musshhhh. Also I found my copy of one of my favorite books of all-time, which is also the book that got me into puzzles as a wee tyke. If you've never 'read' it/played it, check out MAZE by Christopher Manson. It rocked my world when I was younger.
6. for podcasts - This may be old news for most but I just discovered The Besties on Spotify which is a McElroy hosted video game podcast that's made me want to check out several new games. Also please support the following podcasts I guested on recently. The Flophouse - reviewing the nightmarish movie The Fanatic (starring John 'SANDYYY?!' Travolta and written by/directed by Fred 'Nookie' Durst). Pretty Much Pop Podcast - where I discuss Escape Rooms. Something Wonderful Right Away Pod - chatting & improv.
Adal's Gourmet Corner!
Here's some foods/sauces that get the Rifai (baby) seal of approval! (I've put in Amazon links for reference but I know it's not the best to order from them) If you try any please let me know how you liked them!
1. Picamas Salsa Brava green hot sauce - super flavorful and the absolute number one thing to put on your eggs in the morning! LINK
2. Tobasco Sriracha - more tang and kick than normal Sriracha. I tend to put it on most chicken/rice dishes I make at home! LINK
3. Zapp's VooDoo Heat New Orleans style kettle chip - best chips I've ever had. LINK
4. Haitai Korean Honey Butter Chips - most addictive chips I've ever had. Sweet, salty, buttery, weird but once you cruch, you gonna munch? LINK
5. Indo Mie: Mi Goreng Hot & Spicy Indonesian instant noodles - the Porsche of instant ramen. I found on a food bloggers list of best things they had eaten in 2019 while travelling the globe and now Jemma and I are hooked on the stuff. LINK
Here's my Spotify playlist! Just a mix of stuff that's been in my rotation lately and 2 songs from Infinity Train if you haven't checked that out yet! One is the title score and the other is their parody of Monster Mash which I find so fucking funny!
