Patreon Newsletter #8: May!

It’s gonna be May! Hello Ridiots! We hope you’re doing as well as possible and we’re excited to connect with you all! Here’s our monthly newsletter with updates on what’s going on with the podcast, scheduled events and personal recommendations from us 3 hosts and what we’ve been up to! In the comments please let us know what you’ve been enjoying recently as you can never have too many recommendations! Thank you so much for your continued support! Enjoy!

Adal's May Recommendations:

My sleep schedule is FUCKED! I’ve had a poor relationship with sleep all my life but this week I typically go to bed at 9am and then sleep until 4pm. So lot’s of late night/early morning tv and video games. Jemma and I have been smothering the kippies with love and trying to treat ourselves once a week to delivery. We got thai from Three Wheels Thai in Logan Square (phenomenal! Get the golden noodle with chicken!) and are eyeing sush for next week.

TV:

  1. The Last Dance - ESPN 10 part documentary about Jordan’s final season with the Bulls! Hot fuck this is so good. The first 4 parts are out now and it’s some of the happiest I’ve been watching tv. I lived in central Illinois during the bulls reign in the 90’s and I had alllll the Bulls/Dream Team starter jackets, sweatshirts, pennets, hats, etc. and my mom, sister and I watched several of the finals games on our feet jumping around, so this feels like watching home movies. Can’t wait for the next 6 parts!
  2. DEVS - I’ve mentioned this before but I just watched the finale while on an edible and it’s one of the most amazing endings to a show I’ve seen. I loved it. I can’t stress enough if you haven’t seen Annihilation you should watch that (and Ex Machina) and then check out DEVS. I’m also very excited that Nick Offerman rocked this role as a nerdy tech billionaire so he’s opened up a new road for his career vs. being pigeonholed as Ron Swanson.
  3. Dave - sitcom by Jewish comedy rapper Lil Dicky. I’ve mentioned this show on here before but the most recent episode was so fucking funny I wanted to put it back on the list as a reminder to check it out!
  4. Explained: Coronavirus - Japes has sung the praises of Explained before on the show and Jemma also loves it. I’ve only watched a few but checked out this most recent subseries about the current Pandemic and found it interesting and helpful in terms of just having a better grasp on what’s happening. Obviously not for everyone right now but very well done.
  5. What We Do In The Shadows Season 2 - still the funniest thing on tv currently
  6. Midnight Gospel - I’ve only watched one episode and I was high and I still don’t know what to make of it. I’m going to keep going but there seemed to be such a disconnect between what’s being said and what’s happening that I don’t know if it’s my jam? I’ll watch a few more and go from there. They also REALLY lean on that sort of Rick & Morty ‘overspeak’ where someone starts to talk and stutter-speaks to give it a more realistic sound? Very interesting.
  7. Clone High - Another one I’m not sure about. I’ve watched one ep because it’s from Lord & Miller (sounds like they make tailored suits) who did the unbelievably great Spider-verse movie and both LEGO movies. I’ve heard this is hilarious but I didn’t really like it. I’m going to give it a bit more time though. Who knows!
  8. Win The Wilderness - Netflix reality show we’ve watched one ep of. It’s about an old couple in Alaska who built a log cabin with their bare hands and now want to give it away to a deserving couple. Lots of survival skills put to the test and charming brits. Nice show to watch if you’re feeling cooped up. Watching this show makes me want to visit Alaska as soon as possible.

Video Games:

1. Animal Crossing - going strong! Erin came to visit my island and then Jemma’s and told me it’s “like going from Hell to Heaven”. I’ll let you guess who’s island she thought was what. I just got Flora from a mystery island so I’m excited to have her flamingo/ostrich energy in my game and then I got a Lucky (the mummy dog) amiibo. I’m excited as I hear he makes his house full of spooky posters. I’m thinking about burying a few hundred items on my island, 90% junk and 10% coveted items and then have guests over to treasure hunt! Everyone would get to dig up 3 plots and then be done….so we’ll see if I get around to that.

2. Final Fantasy 7 Remake - so. Fucking. Fun. I loved this game. Some of the battles took several tries for me but just a fantastic experience. In talking to Final Fantasy expert Casey Toney I’m going to try a few of the other FF games and check out Person 5 Royal as well. Let me know if you have thoughts/recs in this area!

3. The Last Of Us - just started yesterday but so far it’s like playing an actual horror movie. Wild ride.

Podcasts

enjoying both the uplifting and short ‘Make My Day’ podcast by the very funny Josh Gondelman and the podcast ‘This Is Love’ created by the team behind one of my all-time favorite podcasts ‘Criminal’.

Plugs:

1. I was a guest on the podcast Cinema Jaw! We discuss the top 5 Shapeshifters in movies! Please check it out!

2. JPC and I were guests on the podcast Quiz Quiz Bang Bang. We played as a team against two other folks in a Quiz Show! I think our episode comes out next week if you want to subscribe to their feed or keep an eye out? But we’ll be sure and promote it the day it drops.

3. This Tuesday, May 5th at 8pm I’ll be moderating a livestream with Welcome To Nightvale’s Jeffrey Cranor and Joseph Fink for their new book The Faceless Old Woman Who Secretly Lives in Your Home! They asked me to do this last week and it’s been something I’m immensely looking forward to so please check it out! You can find all the information for viewing on Twitter @THSEA or @ubookstoresea

4. I’ll also be doing a livestream reading as part of Paul Sabourin’s ‘Worst First Chapter’ event which will be raising money for Feeding America and The Actors Fund! I believe my reading will be on May 20th but I’ll post when I know for sure!

Adal’s Gourmet Corner:

  1. Trader Joes Limeade - Sadieh brought us some when dropping off groceries and it’s our new favorite thing at the moment.
  2. Trader Joes Lava Cakes - see above, same deal.
  3. Sausage, Peppers & Onions - one of my best friends Pat loves to cook and has a killer recipe for SP&O’s that I made last night! It makes about 6 pounds of food so be prepared to eat this for a week or freeze some of it, but with a loaf of french bread? Fuck me it’s delicious. *Chef Kiss* Recipe below:

Erin's May Recommendations:

Hey everyone!

This will be short.

I read the book “Normal People” last year and I liked it a lot. Now it’s a Hulu series and I LOVE IT. If you like the book it delivers and makes my stomach turn and makes me feel like I’m falling in love. Also, and I can’t stress this enough, Irish Accents.

Sean and I are planning a Lord of the Rings and 7up watch parties(not at the same time obviously) I will let you know when that happens. I’m also planning a spa night live stream and I’ll give you a date for that soon!

Musical Monday’s starting this monday! Adal and I will discuss Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat this Monday if you are into that kind of thing! You can watch it on YouTube here!

JPC’s May Recommendations:

Hey everyone!

Hope everyone is staying as safe as possible and doing everything they can to stay sane. Mariah and I have been burning through The Expanse (I believe we are currently near the end of season 2) and I watched all of Castlevania (shoutout my friend Clayton for the recommendation) and it's also pretty good! I haven't watched much anime (or much anything animated) and I enjoyed it. For music, I don't listen to it. Occasionally, I'll hear Mariah's music from the other room and it sounds pretty good! For books, I've got a lot of recommendations this month! We've Got People by Ryan Grim. Great read! It's divided into two parts: part 1 is a history of the modern Democratic Party and part 2 is a dive into the modern day progressive movement. Also recommend Why You Should Be a Socialist by Nathan J. Robinson and Bigger Than Bernie by Meagan Day and Micah Uetricht. I'm not all the way through those two yet, but I'm enjoying them both. Podcasts I'm enjoying: Trillbilly Worker's Party, Doughboys, The Antifada, The Insurgents & Here's The Situation. I'm trying to support more podcasts on Patreon, but even listening at 2x speed, it's hard to keep up! If you know some good ones, I'm always looking for new recommendations.

Be safe, be kind, join the DSA!

Love,

JPC
