How to Draw Mouth In My Style - Anatomy Shape Exercise

Continuing with this series about anatomy through shape building, today I want to address the way I draw mouths. I'll be sharing the four most common ones, the first two being very simple and straightforward, yet the last two a bit more challenging. If you dare to try, draw the four types and share it on Discord for 10 Skill Points (I'll personally give it to you).

MOUTHS IN MY STYLE

When I draw mouths, I focus only on the contour line that defines the separation in what's known as the "vermilion border" (I needed to google that one). This line often changes depending on the type of mouth.

I'll approach this type of shape building from top and bottom perspectives for dynamic purposes. Let's dive in.

.

1. Closed

This is probably the most common one as I often rely on eye shapes to convey emotion; mouths stay relatively simple in most cases. I simply define the separation of the vermilion top and bottom with an M line. For female characters, I softly suggest the shape of the upper and lower vermilion border. For males, I just keep the M line.

2. Smile

For the smile type, the M shape stays for the top part of the mouth, and below, I must draw a curvature. I often don't define the whole silhouette of the teeth but a small suggestion line to separate some molars and fangs.

3. Angry

For angry, the top and bottom lips touch each other through a curve for the inner side of the face, as for the outer, it remains a straight line to some degree. I also share a bit of the "gum"; this is perfect to suggest this feeling.

4. Shoked

The previous one, "angry," works as well for shock, but in this particular case, by opening the mouth, it makes the gesture more evident and exaggerated. This one, combined with high-energy eyes, can evoke a sense of shock.

Here are some of these mouths applied to the tutorials we have developed so far. Feel free to try them out yourself.
