In another chapter of ‘How to Deal with Creative Block,’ today we will talk about the ideas we, or ‘I,’ commonly romanticize, stopping me from starting or even making progress on a project. As you know, besides Patreon, I’m working on my game, along with some other projects, and I cannot avoid noticing this struggle I have with starting a new chapter or any step of my project. I’ve noticed I always start with a vision or an idea I really want, and maybe it’s the pressure of failing to achieve that or fear that often stopped me from moving forward.
The funny thing is, after I found the courage to do it and managed to come up with some of that initial goal, I noticed my first idea was not as good as I thought, or I just simply found a better way to say what I wanted. I don’t know if it makes sense, but when creating something, there are a lot of ‘ideal goals’ at the beginning. These get disproved or validated through the process.
Now, you might be asking, ‘What is the solution then?’ To be honest, I don’t really know, as I keep struggling with this from time to time. But recently, I’ve noticed how useful it is to be aware and just simply do a couple of things:
I address some key points initially that help guide me, but often the art creation process is unpredictable and uncertain, filled with doubts.
I break tasks into smaller pieces. Sometimes, the scale of a project can be overwhelming. Try breaking it down into smaller, manageable tasks. This can make starting less daunting and help maintain momentum as completing each small task provides a sense of achievement and progress.
Start with whatever I have in mind on my task list, regardless if it's the silliest part of the process; anything that helps you just start will be more than fine.
So, I say to you, just do it. Don’t overthink; aim to get there one way or another, but just move on. That legitimate reason preventing you from taking that first step might not be important at the end of the journey.
If you are feeling this way about a problem and this little advice is still too abstract to grasp, just DM me and let’s work on something. On the surface, your problem might be different, but in depth, we are probably facing the same issue.
I’m here to help!
