Simple Tip for Facial Expressions with Perspective (Eyes)

Hey everyone! A few days ago, someone was struggling to make the eyes the way I do it. I figured it was more a perspective thing than shape anatomy. Since I've covered eye shapes and then jumped straight to drawing eyes into heads with perspective, I kind of skipped the whole eyes in perspective thing. So in today's post, I want to give you a very simple tip for eyes or any kind of face feature in perspective.

1. Step one: make one eye shape without the pupil, just top and bottom lines to define the eyelids. Duplicate that eye and mirror it. The distance you want both eyes to have is up to you.

2. Here's where the fun happens. Merge both eyes, hit "Ctrl + T" and use the "Perspective" option and "Scale." Use perspective to narrow and minimize the eye size closer to the front. Once applied, you will notice how the eyes will elongate, deforming the actual drawing. Using "Ctrl + T" to scale it back helps correct this elongation without losing the perspective effect.

3. Lastly, add pupils and make small adjustments to keep the eyes round because this perspective effect tends to flatten the shapes.

I've recorded a short video in which you can see me approaching this technique: https://youtu.be/dQs6Se7x5SY

Do I use this approach? If you have seen some of my process videos, you will notice I just go straight to drawing eyes with the perspective already implemented, so no, I don't. But understand that I've been doing this intuitively for years, and it's relatively simple to solve this issue in a short amount of time. Most of you are just starting to master this simple technique, so give this a try, and after a while, you will notice you no longer need to do it this way.

.

Tomorrow, I'll be sharing the process video of this piece along with the files and insights. They will be available for Mastering Maestro tier and above. Feel free to upgrade if you want more insights about my work.
