Exploration Often Shows You the Way - 'Eat' Video and File
Added 2024-08-16 16:00:13 +0000 UTCThe concept of 'eat' evolved out of a totally different goal as you can see in the process video. I saw a nice moment between a couple in the bathroom that sparked the inspiration for this story, yet I was not sure what reference in terms of object, animal, or food would guide the art direction, as it commonly does.
I started using washbasin pics, fish tanks, and even faucets, but none of those really shared any relation with the moment. Yes, they were casual and shared at least one thing with the composition, like water, for instance, but visually there was nothing to compare besides colors.
I still decided to move forward and draw, hoping for something to click throughout the process. So in between breaks, while searching for a simple yet compelling reference, I found the sushi picture with the shrimp. This one, in a way, resembled not only the color but also the shape of the mermaid tail and was enough excuse for me to use it. A part of me felt I wasted so much time just trying to justify this little step in the art, but another part just felt grateful that I remembered that this is supposed to be simple and that often the exploration shows you the way.
