Review Crew #64: Science Topics

On this month's review crew, we each pick a subject that has something to do with science, research it, and try our best to explain it to the other hosts. If we get anything wrong, feel free to---wait, what am I saying? We recorded it so I already know that we didn't get anything wrong. Phew, bullet dodged there!

Unfortunately I have to report that the Ben Shapiro sister tweet was fake, and there are also a bunch of fake tweets about him not believing in female pleasure too. (I hate him, don’t get me wrong. And if people wanna keep spreading it around that he’s attracted to his sister I certainly won’t stand in their way.)

I don't think I've ever heard Erin sound so sad at the end of an episode, so I won't say how much I enjoyed this. It did remind me of the "friends research and explain topics to their friends" podcast format which I had forgotten that I like.

Marguerite Moore

Okay but actually, so glad JPC clarified “eels” cuz I had no idea what a “yule” was! 😅

Kaci Messerly

This format was wonderful! I’d love to hear more, you guys break down these subjects in interesting and enjoyable ways.

VideoGC

listened to this while working in the lab testing DNA!!! so fun I'm very happy

Cat Gonzales

That’s actually so upsetting

Kat Vincent

Honestly one of my favourite episodes! Sorry Erin!! I'd listen to this format forever

Rose Elle

All spaghettification makes me think of bringing it up as an eight year old in class while being taught about the concept of black holes and being dismissed by the teacher as incorrect.

nini

I would pay for another Patreon membership to listen to all three of you just talk about random science topics. Please lol

gwitch

:(

Michaela Jantzen

1000%

Michaela Jantzen

This is a brilliant idea for an episode - I would pay money for the three of you to make this content as a standalone podcast 🙏🏻

Michaela Jantzen

Time is made of mice because hickory dickory dock the mouse ran up the clock 🤔

riss

100% yes!

Kat Vincent

I’m so glad Erin brought up spaghettification. Black holes has been my husband’s hyper fixation recently and spaghettification has simultaneously become my new echolalia and my new biggest fear.

Kat Vincent

I feel like the sheer number of us who could give this eel discourse immediately shows they really hit the target stem grad student demographic.

Victoria Morris

It's so cool that Erin was taught high school science by the Weezer album Pinkerton

Hurry Up Snufkin

me, at y'all talking about how this has the potential to make people The Most Mad: it's not like they'll pick one of the two topics I both give a shit about and know enough about to get mad about adal: so, EELS! me: fuck. To keep it short, (yes, this *is* the short version) adal, mate, *western* people didn't know about the eel lifecycle and were obsessed with their testicles. māori absolutely knew they grew from glass eels/elvers (and are also what cause the moon to wane in māori mythology!) And while the spawning grounds of the european eel were *precisely* located in 2022 and tracked and recorded, it was pretty much known what they did and where. Egg scattering is a common way fish fertilize eggs! And eels have semi-recently been induced to spawn in captivity by using hormones. However, the conflicting reports you were seeing on captive spawning are due to what has been called "eel farming" *until* those methods were developed really being eel *rearing* after capturing them at the glass eel/elver stage. Overfishing of eels is a huge problem. The survival rate of glass eels is small, so arguments have been made that by harvesting them at that stage, they are simply removing and raising fish that would have died anyway. However, that is only true if a significant portion are still available to make it through the non-human early life threats. So uh, maybe don't eat eel that's been commercially caught/reared. (Which is a damn shame because eel is delicious.) Bonus eel fact: female New Zealand longfin eels can live up to 60 years, there is no known trigger for them to move to the final stage in their lifecycle, happening from when the females are 20 and males are 13.

More of this please! It's got 'explain it to me like I'm 5 energy" and that's filling my cup,

Kayla Nollette

I need Erin to guest on as many science podcasts as possible

Mitchell Crispi

I loved this one! I'm sad that Erin's topic gave her existential dread, though. I feel like this could be a fun format without making any of the hosts feel bad, depending on the topics chosen. To me it has the vibes of the Dropout show Smartypants, only you did actual research.

Bob Hopp

1:03:06 clip it. Casey, clip it.

jollytheoldsaint

I loved this!

Kelso of the Sea

Ologies stressed me out because the ep on gender had really outdated info on how we talk about sex and gender

Cory!

It's very cool info about tiny black holes

Cory!

You should check out this ep of radiolab Little Black Holes Everywhere https://search.app/Vaew3USgiWEiAx8t8

Cory!

I actually think its quite beautiful that humanity continues to ask questions we may never know the answer to. Every impossible answer achieved only creates new impossible questions because the pursuit of the unknown is just part of who we are.

May

Anybody who really digs this episode should check out 'Ologies' hosted my Allie Ward!

GayWeiner420

Hate to be this guy, but as someone with a science degree I can't abide by the discussion at ~21min - JPC: Just one Puddle of Mudd song... *makes a noise from a Disturbed song* Is that it? Adal *sings a P.O.D song* JPC: Is that Staind? Adal: That might be Hoobastank. If you don't know what you're talking about then please just leave it out and get back to teaching us about helium, eels, and black holes.

Ron

Another physicist here who did a phd in computational astrophysics and knows a ton about black holes, Erin you did a fantastic job! My supervisor was one of the leads in taking the black hole picture and we read a bunch of those papers about Interstellar (yes there were scientific papers published about it!) since the same physics was used in the modelling.

Luke Bovard

Ben Shapeelro

Alex & Maria

I took an astronomy class a couple years ago and a frequent thought I had during that semester was, "Huh. Interstellar got it right."

Christine Govas-Robert

It made me think of a podcast I also like a lot called Good Job Brain. They learn things and quiz each other for pub trivia topics. In case you, like me, have already listened to every episode of HRR 4 times and need something new check out there back catalog.

SarahGoose

This was one of my favorite episodes! Sorry it gave Erin so much dread but I think she explained it well. Don’t be so hard on yourself Erin. Both Adal and JPC’s topics were also very interesting too.

SarahGoose

This was great. I think this should be what the podcast is from now on. Hey Science Science

Joseph Grassi

I love The Book of Eels!!! Amazing book. Highly recommend!

Reed

Thought Erin might be interested to know that we actually HAVE taken a picture of a black hole (the one in the center of our galaxy!), using the Event Horizon Telescope in 2019!

Thomas Flott

As a science lover I was worried about this episode, but I found it lovely. I realized that what I hate is not people getting things wrong, but those who get it wrong and leave no room to learn and grow. For anyone that looking for a good book that explores what I find beautiful about science "A short history of nearly everything" by Bill Bryson

Tad Moore

As a scientist who works in Boston’s biotech, I’m cackling 😂 y’all are doing awesome fr!! (Also JPC, when I tutored/TA’d Orgo in undergrad, I always told the kids orgo is a “group sport” and that in real life, you will always have access to google. If you can’t/don’t have time to google it, you’re probably dead anyway😅)

Charlotte Sandland

The Book of Eels is excellent! Just one additional vote for giving it a read if what Adal talked about interests you!

Olivia

Physicist. Here. Great job guys loved all of it! Thanks for doing the research and getting after explaining it to viewers. Yall wanna know anymore indepth explains hit us up

Kai

I would pay good money for Adal to do some animal investigation episodes

Riddy Kitties Probate Lawyer

"Well I for one am glad that I will never have to live in a world without balloons" is the best thing I've ever heard and a strong contender for the next out of context bracket
