Practice 2 – Children, Climbers, and Old Ladies

Hey everyone! Here are the process and files from Practice #2 I did last week. You weren’t expecting a post today, were you? Yeah, I guess I have more to share.

Why did I choose these references? Well, the child gave me a warm feeling—I think. To be honest, I’m not trying to structure too much thought behind these decisions.

The mountain climbers? I really liked the composition. I actually pushed the perspective a bit further than intended (you’ll notice it in the video), and it’s been a while since I’ve painted only in black and white. I’m also trying to pick challenges that are achievable in 30 to 40 minutes, so I can remind myself not to push too hard all the time. You know, one chill practice before the storm.

And, of course, the lady’s hands—that was the ‘storm.’ It had so many details in terms of values, colours, and shapes. That one was tough, but I think it was fun.

I don’t know why, but I’m drawn to painting old people. Maybe it’s because I’m getting older, or I miss my grandfather, or maybe I just need to call my grandmother—and this is how I express it. Whatever it is, I’m glad I’m following my instincts.
