The Tip That Improved My Art – Artbook Launch April 8!

You might think this tip is about how to draw—a specific kind of stroke movement or a technical insight in digital painting—but that kind of advice is already all over my Patreon.

This tip is something different. In a word: writing.

Because of the type of business I’ve chosen my Patreon to be, it requires me to put into words what I’m doing while I paint. And that might sound easy from the outside, but the truth is, most of the time I’m not fully aware of it myself. I work by mixing taste with intuition, and when I’m creating, I’m not always analysing what I’m doing. In fact, overanalysing during the process often fills my mind with thoughts—some of them doubts—that distract me from simply working.

So instead, after I’ve finished a piece—sometimes days later—I sit down and try to remember what was going through my mind: what decisions I made and why, what I was reacting to, what I was avoiding. And surprisingly, that act of writing has helped me understand not just what I seem to like, but more importantly, what discomfort or inner friction I was working through at the time.

I don’t think we know ourselves as well as we like to believe. Getting to know yourself takes deliberate habits. And writing, I’ve found, is one of the most useful ones.

So how does this help you? And how do you actually do it?

If you feel stuck, if your art doesn’t mean much to you anymore, or if something just feels off and you can’t explain why—

Try this: sit down and describe your last piece from beginning to end. For example:

This isn’t about being profound. It’s about paying attention. The more you write, the clearer the patterns become. You’ll start noticing what kind of ideas inspire you, where you tend to get stuck, what fears interrupt your process, and what you keep trying to say without even realising it.

Try doing this every day, or at least after each finished piece. Don’t wait for inspiration. Just write what you remember—rough, honest, unfiltered. Keep it short if you need to. The point isn’t to impress anyone, it’s to hear yourself think. Over time, that reflection becomes a mirror. And once you can see yourself clearly, it’s a lot easier to grow.

And that’s what helped me write this book.

The Art of RamonN90 – Life in Every Sketch

Yes, you read that right.

Since last year, I’ve been working with the team at 3DTotal on something really special, my first book.

I won’t spoil too much just yet—I’ll be sharing more over the next few days—but here’s what I can tell you: after five years of writing here on Patreon, I’ve learned how to put my thoughts, lessons, and artistic process into words as clearly and honestly as possible. And that’s exactly what this book is. A collection of everything I’ve learned, struggled with, and discovered—through the sketches, the strokes, the doubts, and the breakthroughs.

It’s all there. Made for the best out there: you.

The campaign goes live on Kickstarter Tuesday, April 8 at 4 PM BST (one week from today). Set your alarm, and get all the details at this link:

Thank you for putting the deepest processes into words, the things about being an artist that no one talks about. I’m so excited for the book!
