I think the adaptation was acceptable. I think that is the way things would have gone if an American kid would get his hands on the note. Maybe that doesn't make the best story, but it's reasonable. But definitely the short time span of the movie is what hurts it the most. You cannot possibly develop the awesome, complex relationship L and Light have in the anime. And that eventually is the downfall of the film.

The funny thing is though that in the anime L does randomly reveal his face to Light, but he doesn't antagonise him the way that he does in this movie. Also, he only ever says that he suspects him 7% or something small like that. He tries to catch Light off guard and that's what escalates their game of cat and mouse. In this movie though, they just make so many stupid mistakes and just go ballistic on each other. Not fun at all.

I think CBG19 could do a Netflix Marvel series correctly. If that wasn't a possibility, a feature length horror film would work. Low budget friendly and something tells me it would be twisted.

cbg19, what kind of movies would you want to start out making?

Here's my Cents 2: Netflix has made it into something of a teen romance. "Entertaining". But the source material is only entertaining because of how intelligent it is and that intelligence is a key feature of what drives the entire series. The *real* love story in Death Note is the relationship between L and Light, the only two people smart enough to understand each other who are both incredibly lonely and distant from connecting with others. Having to be enemies because of the circumstance despite that depth of connection. The L and Light dynamic is essential to both characters being endearing and their key features are loneliness and intelligence. Also, if you don't include the potato chip scene WHAT ARE YOU DOING. An underuse of Willem Dafoe (who probably would have been scarier WITHOUT the CG) and an underuse of Lakeith Stanfield who seemed to understand the source material and had incredible moments but the scenes between he and Light should have made up the bulk of the film. Also, Light needed the palpable distance and fortitude of an INTJ type whose loneliness is guarded so he doesn't feel it until he meets L at which point he understands the connection other humans speak about experiencing DUH.

Honestly, it is worth watching for William Defoe's Ryuk performance. The costume and makeup were classic. I loved the demonic laughs and the chaotic nature of the Death God.

The trailers for Death Note looked all wrong. Too much action focus, which wasn't anywhere close to what made the anime good. The best part of the anime was the conversations where they tried to outsmart each other. It's important that Light appears likable and starts off likable to make the viewer feel conflicted. It looked from the trailer that we'd be rooting against Light from the very beginning. Reminds me of the Dark Tower film and new Ghostbusters where it feels like the people making it didn't really get the original material. I decided not to watch all 3 from the trailers, and I think I made a good choice.

Well, I never heard of Death Note until the Netflix movie. 😬🤷🏽♂️ I didn't think it was THAT bad. It was better than a bad "made for sci fi channel" movie...😬 I will go and watch the anime though. Now that I know this exists

I was gonna ask you guys to review it!, the only redeeming quality is the practice effects used for Ryuk, it was so wasted on the film.

My favorite part is when Light and his girlfriend are discussing their super secret supernatural mass murder plans in the high school library. This dude is a moron, and he is lucky the movie didnt notice that.
This basic plot -could- have worked, but not with this director and not with this lead actor. Instead, I learned to actual enjoy this movie once I divorced this from the anime, and kinda riff-watched it.
