Questions for Dune Club Session 11

Fire away!

We also don't really have any real notion of racial difference between Paul's heritage and the Fremen except to note that their cultures have different origins. They might all be white or dark skinned or (I think likely) all mixed up because it's the future and humans haven't evolved in isolation from each other.

Could you post the session 12 question post earlier than Sunday please? The last couple of times I've put my question in the previous week's post because we didn't get the current one until a few hours before the stream, and I'm usually asleep when the session occurs.

I think precognitive dreams do occur, that Frank Herbert knew this and was through the novel trying to raise people's sensitivity to such dreams. "Man and Time" by J. B. Priestley has some interesting, sober speculations about precognition. Have you ever had such experiences? (BTW I have joined Patreon because of Dune Club. Well done and thank you House 19, for the work and love you have put into this project.)

In my mind, Paul is not the real saviour, but he will bring it. Like Anakin Skywalker who's not the saviour of the galaxy but Luke (and the help of Leia). Like Bilbo receiving the One Ring to give It to Frodo, who'll destroy It. (arguments from next novels The Children of Dune and The God Emperor of Dune, if i'm right and don't say sh*t) Moreover Paul is a prophet, and there's no prophet in his own country, the prophet must come from elsewhere.

Have always wondered why Frank Herbert felt the need to make Paul (an outsider) the 'saviour' of the Fremen people. It cannot just be from a everyone-needs-to-be-saved-by-the-white-man perspective.

Hi there CBG19. First I want to thank you very much for giving me the opportunity to dive into this psychedelic trip called "Dune". I wanted to read the book for years but since English is not my native tongue I wanted to reach a level where I could understand in full the complexity of this artwork. The timing of this Dune Club synchronized perfectly. My question is the following: If the Spice is the most valuable resource in the Dune Universe and Arrakis is the only place where you can get that resource, it is little strange to me why the Emperor wouldn't supervise the extraction of the spice himself but will instead have another noble house do that which as we see in the book creates a variety of problems. Considering that the Emperor is already CHOAM's biggest share holder, wouldn't be more productive and less confrontational to have current royal house personally supervising the spice production and then share the profits between the royal houses based on their position within CHOAM's hierarchy? Thank you very much for everything you're doing. I love your content, your ideas and personal values you share with us. Everything resonates with me perfectly and I would love to join Watchmen book club when it comes out. Keep fighting the good fight and bless your heart.

Nikolay

Thank you niko. Much love!

Unless I'm mistaken, it isn't that they can't access male ancestors, just not male ancestors along paternal lines. The Baron was her mothers Father (he gave her mother an X chrom) so she had access. She would not have had access to the Baron's father.

This was an awesome comment. Thanks for sharing your story!!

why is it called the orange catholic bible?

Oil is a finite resource that's taken millions of years to be created. If civilization needs to to start over again it would be nice to have that resource there if we have to start from a pre-industrial state. Just like there are stages in the evolution of life there are stages in the evolution of civilization.

This question relates to Children of Dune so if you're not answering those then just ignore this I guess but I was wondering how Alia could become possessed by her grandfather. I thought only the Kwizat Hadderach could interact with both genders of their ancestry and that women could only interact with their feminine history. Is this an oversight by Frank Herbert?

Does "Full-breasted houris" mean what I think it means?

Hello CB19. I can't believe this is nearly over. I never cared about The Watchmen, but plan to join that club too and see if it grows on me. Actual question: is it ever made clear what Paul did to Gurney's crew? They seem to have been forgotten, which seems uncharacteristic of Guerney at least. Also, more of a question for last session: Do the Fremen blame the entire Imperium for their scattering? Who exactly do they not forgive?

Session 11 comment: more a comment. I listen to the book on audible because I had a traumatic brain injury that caused damage to the part that processes written word properly. So the first time listening to Paul reunite with Gurney I remember thinking "wtf. That's way more emotional than I would think this reunion would be." But my second time through im reminded of some of my old friends. The ones who remember me before my injury. Before the PTSD. Before I became a fractured consciousness. And everytime I see one of those old friends I feel like the old me again. Like, for a short time I am the Heath that wrote poetry and short stories that moved people's hearts. So, I think of Paul, awakened and tuned into universal consciousness, but when Gurney shows up, for a moment, he could just be Paul: talented, optimistic son of the Duke who can laugh and be totally in the now moment. You grow to cherish those relationships as life takes you into new volumes of your personal legend. Do you have a friend or two who brings you back to the younger self within? Aren't they priceless?

I just have a couple comments. I like how Baklava is still a good in this future. Also, I don't know where it was cause I was listening while riding my bike but I think it was a Princess Irulan chapter prelude. The orthodox must choose between destruction in order to uphold principle or falling from political corruption in order to hold power. That's it. 😁

Was the Fremen way of killing a leader for another to take their place in one on one combat started as a Fremen tradition, or was this too put in their minds by outsiders as a way to control their culture? What better way to rid them of two strong fighters then to have them fight each other? Just like in foreign politics, the US will kill a leader who they don't agree with or is harder to manage and put in a puppet who'll go along with their set of rules. Perhaps overtime this evolved in the Fremen culture, outsiders convinced them the best way to have elections was murder? Convinced that the "stronger" will survive, and the "weaker" must die always.
