I feel silly even typing this obvious ass statement BUT Blade Runner is a massively influential film. Ridley Scott created an atmosphere that continues to inspire creatives like myself today. One can trace Ridley’s visual inspirations for this movie from Dan O’Bannon’s short story comic “The Long Tomorrow” created in 1975. Illustrated by Moebius while the two collaborated on Jodorowsky’s doomed production of Dune, their comic was published in Heavy Metal magazine and is considered one of the first cyberpunk stories ever told.

After Dune fell apart, Ridley scooped the two men up and made Alien based off O’Bannon’s script Starbeast with Moebius working on concept art. Next, he set about filming Blade Runner. Scott asked Moebius to work with him on visually developing Blade Runner, but the artist turned him down for another gig and later stated he regretted that decision but even without the French master artist, Blade Runner turned out beautifully. 

We had a lot of fun trying to capture the Blade Runner mood for this shoot. The blue dress is a vintage piece I picked up from @butchwaxvintage on Instagram. It’s a Nolan Miller from the 1980’s designed with a 1940’s aesthetic using an iridescent metallic blue futuristic fabric. If you didn't know, Nolan Miller is the man behind the fashion on the hit tv show Dynasty and is totally responsible for the power shoulders trend of the decade.

The dress I am wearing was wardrobe from one of the television shows he designed for, I’m not sure which one, but on the inside tag is written STAR: Jessica. I dearly hope Jessica Walter wore this back in the day. She was on a few shows that Nolan Miller designed for and I adore her so much. Anyway! When I saw this piece, I was like THAT IS SO RACHAEL and spent way too much money on it. I’m so happy to finally show it off for you! One day I promise to wear this dress in Tokyo.

The next thing I had to find to complete this look was the lingerie. Originally, I had bought some stuff from an etsy seller in England but when it finally arrived I felt it wasn't right so the hunt continued. For those of you who have never bought lingerie, there are two modes. Cheap trashy stuff that don’t cost much and high class call girl shit that costs wayyyy too much. It’s like yo, I don’t want to spend $300 on just the thong my dude :/ 

Got the idea to hit up a lingerie store in town I’ve been wanting to visit ever since I saw it featured in a documentary about underwear on TV when I was in high school. The shop is called Trashy Lingerie and they design and make their own stuff in-house (their website is Trashy.com if you’re interested). 

So there I was looking for something out of the ordinary. Some sexy shit that looked both futuristic and vintage and boy I found it in their new Velvet Amsterdam collection. LIKE WOAH! Tried on several pieces and combinations but the high necked long sleeved crotchless one piece HAD ME AT HELLO. This is like the perfect Rachael lingerie. It’s business and feminine, bold straps and black lace…the perfect balance of old and new, strong and soft. What a score! And of course, I had to pair this teddy with some classic lacy top sheer seamed thigh highs and a pair of my own mothers black leather Stuart Weitzman pumps from the 80’s. 

My friend Sydney Clark did the hair styling with the help of my other friend Talia who lent me her bridal hair extensions that JUST SO HAPPEN TO PERFECTLY MATCH MY HAIR RIGHT NOW (what great fortune). Syd really nailed this hair style considering I have zero hair on the sides of my head and I’m super lucky to have such a talented lady like her in my life. Go see her at Stardust Salon in East Hollywood if you’re in the LA area and want to UP your hair game.

I did the makeup myself and had a lot of fun replicating the replicant look. Her sharp little lip points are key and took some practice to perfect. The eye makeup is so dreamy and soft. My eyebrows lent themselves to the look flawlessly since I've been growing them for years now because natural looking 80s brows are best brows imho. Rachael has such a sad little doll face.

Tyson did an amazing job shooting. He really helped capture the feeling of Blade Runner with his lighting. Going from a darker blue and purple palette that is reminiscent of the outdoor urban scenes in the movie to an orange golden-hour light filtered through blinds (that Josh detached from my bedroom window and put on up a C-Stand in the studio) that is similar to that first scene in Tyrell’s pyramid where Deckard and Rachael first meet. My ass lighting is also on point as you’ll notice. 

By the way, shout out to Pendo.Co incense and clove cigarettes for providing all the smoke in the room which definitely helped create the perfect atmosphere.

Personally, I’ve wanted to cosplay as Rachael partly because she is so under-serviced (because of the complexity of her look) and partly because I want to explore the question, “How am I the Robot?” As someone who has criticized other people of being robots it was interesting to challenge myself to meditate upon how I may be just as mechanical. Like what a twist! WHAT IF I WERE THE DAMN ROBOT THIS WHOLE TIME. FUCK!

Because I adore all the ladies of Blade Runner so much, I’d really love to do all three female replicants (Blade Runner takes place in 2019 if you didn’t know) but it’s a lot of time and work to get them right so I’m adding a cosplay goal here on Patreon.

When we hit my “I LOVE YOU 3000 Patrons” goal I promise to do both Pris and Zhora! Holy shit I’ve wanted to dress up as Pris since I first saw the movie when I was a kid but since her character has been done soooo much I’ve abstained...BUT NO MORE! For this shoot I plan to live my dreams and go out into the wilds of Chinatown to sneak some naughty shots under the cover of darkness and neon signs. Let’s pray I don’t get arrested for being nude in public. Gonna have to practice some back bends for this hot mess haha.

Now Zhora is the one that got shot in the back running through glass. Earlier when Deckard is at The Snake Pit, he watches her performance from the bar before finding her backstage. We never see her show in the film but we do hear the emcee announce Miss Salome seductively asking the audience to watch her take the pleasures from ze serpent. We see her after the show in her dressing room naked covered in sequin glitter carrying a big ass snake. That’s what I’m going for in this potential shoot. Zhora’s un-filmed snake dance photo set that will absolutely involve me having to rent a live boa and hire a makeup artist to glue sequins all over my kitty body.
