Tarot Class 8: Minor Arcana Suit of Swords

The Suit of Swords, also known as Blades, Spades, Athames, and Epee, is associated with the Air element. It represents the Intellectual World which deals with THINKING: ideas, concepts, language, memes, meditation, acquired conditioning, and consciousness. How we employ our mental energy to bring our ideas to life.

 

Ace – Enterprise. Potential for Intellectual Energy. Mental clarity to find solutions. A breakthrough in thinking. Reversed indicates keeping an idea close and not sharing it with others. Clouded Judgement. Missing Information. Having an idea flop and needing to start over from scratch.

II – Contemplation. Weighing your options, calculating pros and cons before deciding, missing vital information, research. Reversed indicates being in a pickle, a need to utilize intuition rather than intellect, and a deadlock. 

III –Wound. Worrying about the past, anxiety about the future, hurt, pain, disappointment. Reversed indicates being too hard on yourself, being overly sensitive, and holding on to grief.

IV – Solitude. Taking time to rest and recharge, recuperation, self-reflection, meditation, seclusion. Reversed can indicate burn-out, exhaustion, and resentment born from stagnation

V – Rivalry. Walking away with bad blood, conflict, unbridled ambition, winning at all costs. Reversed indicates a no-win situation, avoiding acknowledging a conflict, lingering hostility, and needing to apologize. 

VI – Transition. Leaving a turbulent situation behind, a rite of passage, self-reflection, processing trauma, going into the unknown. Reversed indicates deeply personal development, resisting change, unfinished business, and emotional baggage.

VII – Evasion. Utilizing strategy, deception, successfully pulling off a scheme, cunning, stealth. Reversed indicates feeling like a fraud, betraying oneself, the mental burden of duplicity, and feeling ready to quit the charade. 

VIII – Submission. Giving ones power away to a belief system, feeling trapped, deciding to leave or stay. Reversed indicates accepting personal responsibility and freeing oneself from the past or an obsolete belief system.

IX –Fear. Excessive worry or anxiety, processing trauma, depression, creating a self-fulfilling prophesy, nightmare. Reversed indicates thinking things are worse than they are, negative self-talk, despair, and attempting to “wake up”.

X – Collapse. The personal cost of victory, hitting rock bottom, victim mentality, betrayal, defeat, painful ending. Reversed indicates staving off an inevitably painful situation, and old wounds that need healing.

Reversed indicates being unsure about following an idea. Being all talk. Empty words or promises. Acting without thinking about the consequences. Incessant questioning. Deception. Manipulation.  

Knight – On a mission to fulfill an ambition. Charging in and learning through action. Determination. Fearlessness. High energy. Quick thinking. Fast Acting. Excellent conversationalist and debater. Defending beliefs. Reversed indicates a rebel without a cause. Impatience. Impulsiveness. Lacking direction. A need to slow down and take a time out. Restlessness. Nervous energy.

Queen – Independent Woman Energy. Impartial judgment. Direct communicator. Truth Sayer. Blunt. Perceptiveness. Setting clear boundaries. Complex.
