Robert Jordan was a good friend of G.R.R. Martin before Jordan passed away and they reference each other's work in their respective book series. "You know nothing, Jon Snow." was originally "You know nothing, Rand al Thor." in The Wheel of Time

They could have used the extra episodes to flesh out the character development and their decision making. Even if we don't like how the writers ended things, at least with more scenes in between what we saw things would habe probably made more sense. The battle with the White Walkers could have used an extra episode...you know, have it stretch into the morning to get some daylight in there ?
