Tarot Class: Major Arcana 12-21 & 0

Overview

Today we examine the second half of the Major Arcana whose themes/meanings build upon the themes/meanings found in the first half.

If you make two rows with the Major Arcana using 1-11 for the top row and 12-0 beneath, an interesting relationship appears in the columns (I have added my own little personal anecdote about these relationships in addition to the “GENERAL MEANING” and “THEMES” of each card).

The first half of the Trumps span the Chaotic Art of Magic to the Orderly Science of Law. It’s a journey of Self-realization and acceptance of the Other, like how everything in the Universe is formed of individual units that come together to form things larger than themselves. We take Nothing and turn it into “Something”.

If 1-11 represent going from Birth to becoming an Adult and joining Society, 12-21&0 is a hero’s journey representing a shamanic descent into the Underworld ending in Rebirth. We take our “Something”, let it fall apart, then rebuild it and make our return as “Something 2.0”.

12. The Hanged Man – (Water/Neptune) GENERAL MEANING: Non-doing

THEMES: Pause/Delay, Non-Doing/Stalling, Sacrifice/Selfishness, Letting Go/Resistance, Meditation/Mystic Ecstacy, New Perspective, Surrender/Self-Punishment, Gestation/Pregnancy, Waiting, Suspension, Commune with the Self, Tied to the Family Tree, the Structures that Bind Us, Martyrdom  

The Go-Getter energy of the Magician is inverted in the Hanged Man. He goes from one who must make a choice to one who must wait on making any decisions. The will to choose learns patience in non-doing. 

13. Death – (Scorpio) GENERAL MEANING: Profound Transformation

THEMES:  Transition/Destruction, Cleansing/Purging, Radical Change/Mutation, Endings/Beginnings, Revolution/Aggressiveness, Mortality, Harvest/Cut, Initiation, Work of Mourning, Leave Behind what no longer serves

The High Priestess who is the Dweller on the Threshold of the Conscious/Subconscious mind becomes Death, the Dweller on the Threshold of Life and whatever comes next. This Profound Transformation is what she was preparing for in her study.

14. Temperance – (Sagittarius) GENERAL MEANING: Moderation is the Key

  THEMES: Adaptability/Anxiety, Health/Healing, Circulation/Blend, Frugality/Excess, Union/Unfortunate Combination, Dynamic Balance, Measure, Patience, Guardian Angel, Re-alignment, Reconciliation, Fluidity, Androgyny, Even-Temper

The Creative Outburst of the Empress finds that Moderation is the Key in Temperance. Her abundance is circulated, nourishing all.

15.  The Devil – (Capricorn) GENERAL MEANING: Temptation

THEMES: Charm/Suggestibility, Sensuality/Perversion, Dependency/Vice, Passion/Obsession, Attachments/Addiction, Transgressing Taboo, Fear/Hate, Darkness, Subconscious Forces, The Shadow Self, Contract, Pride, Deep Creativity, Possession, Money, Self-Created Problems, Intuitiveness 

The authority of the Emperor becomes a tyrannical Devil creating dependency and turning his subjects into slaves. Stability becomes stagnant and boredom turns into temptation. 

16. The Tower – (Mars) GENERAL MEANING: Emergence of the Imprisoned

THEMES: Awakening/Shattered certainties, Escape/Incarceration, Liberation/Exile, Dispute/Divorce, Moving House/Changing Job, Adversity, Chaos, Explosion, Accident, Revelation, Ejaculation, Lightning Strike, Truth Revealed, To Let Loose, Time to Move On, Unrealistic or Overly Idealistic Project gone Awry, Burst of Energy, Phallus   

The Institutions/Ideals that come together in the Hierophant are blasted apart. The brick and mortar reality of the Tower has become a prison and collapses as the Divine Inspiration that built it escapes.

17. The Star – (Aquarius) GENERAL MEANING: To Find One’s Place

THEMES: Gift/Waste, Receptivity/Connection, Hope/Lack of Faith, Luck/Talent, Generosity/Self-Care, To Sanctify/Purification Ritual, Becoming a Vessel, Fertility, Sacred Space, Celebrity, Purpose, Spirituality, Celestial Influence, Divine Agent, Self-Love, Natural Expression, Irrigation, Magic, Inspiration 

The Lovers stop looking for someone else to make them happy and choose to love themselves in the Star. They finally find their place in the world, settle down, and get to work.

18. The Moon – (Pisces) GENERAL MEANING: Cosmic Receptivity

THEMES: Visions/Dreams, Intuition/Uncertainty, Phases/Inconsistency, Reflection/Receptivity, Imagination/Sensitivity, Gestation/Menstruation, Anxiety/Listening to Gut Instincts, Feelings, A Night Journey, The Unconscious, Madness, Poetry, Deception, Illusion, Femininity, Cosmic Mother, Feeling it Out 

The assured action of the Chariot becomes uncertain when the Moon rises and darkness falls. To travel forth and conquer one must learn to become receptive to the tides of intuition.

The conscious self-control of Strength becomes natural, effortlessly riding a top her animal instincts in the Sun. Refined energy receives Universal Endorsement.

20. Judgement – (Pluto/Fire) GENERAL MEANING: Irresistible Desire

The Wheel of Fortune becomes elliptical, giving birth to the next generation of the World. The seemingly flat circular rhythms of nature become three dimensional creating a spiral realizing a higher perspective and greater realization.
