10 Levels Of Alternate Picking

Alternate picking! The scourge of every guitar player. From my 15+ years of teaching there's by far no other single technique that most students are desperate to improve on.

We've covered a bunch of different alternate picking-based lessons so far here at the Guitar School, including the super popular 1 Minute Workout, but I've been super eager to make a comprehensive, focussed exercise on it.

So expanding on the "levels" format I've been using in the 1 Minute Workouts, I've created this study that features 10 levels of difficulty; starting with some chill 8th note patterns and working all the way up to some 32nd note picking insanity!

Good luck and don't forget to share your progress with everyone in the Discord server!

Thank for this. This video is so helpful as I work through this lesson, the additional tips are VERY valuable as I get stuck or have an issue getting up to speed, I can come here and you seem to know where I would need extra help. The wrist, the thumb, not engaging my forearm when I do, breaking all these old habits. It may take me months, but I know this is dragging into the light all the things I need to improve on. Told my buddy, “Lessons like this were what all our guitar heroes were doing at GIT in the 80’s”. To have had lessons like this decades ago…..thank you Bradley.

Starting this as to improve my cover of sweating bullets solo. It's definitely going to help.

thank you for the concise exercise with catchy melody. I have made it to Level 9 ( Cross Picking) and Level 10 (32nd notes) on my first try. Level 9 emphasizes the tests the alternate picking which got me stuck. Steadily I improve. This and MoP solo has me practicing for the last two weeks.

Everything's in collections, yeah! There's also a spreadsheet of every lesson in the pinned post!

Bradley Hall

Do these get posted to the collections or is the only way to pull them up later by using the search bar?

Joseph Auday

ahaha

Bradley Hall

Either is fine!

Bradley Hall

Cheers Alan, glad you dig them!!

Bradley Hall

Oh god hmmm I think the full speed is 120 and I usually make the slower one 20-30 bpm slower!

Bradley Hall

What are the BPMs of the wavs?

Alan

Joined for this type of lesson! Keep them coming please

Alan

This was sweeeeeet. Thank you Bradley!!!!

Joseph Auday

only I heard “Sweating bullet” kind of intro wen I started ‘Level 2 (introducing another string)’ in Em verse? 😂

Alessio Ponzin

Greetings Sweepman! I got a little question for the 5th level , is it correct to use left hand to mute those rests in first and 2nd beat (just between 000)? Or should I just use right hand palm on the bridge

This is awesome! Thank you so much for all you do ❤️

Joseph Auday

It does, thank you. 😁

Cheers Bjorn, hope you get something out of this one!

Bradley Hall

I would recommend mastering as much as you can straight through at a slower tempo, then start speeding up gradually. It would also be beneficial to do some "bursty" practice at full speed with the level that's JUST out of your comfort zone. Hope that helps!

Bradley Hall

Great news!!

Bradley Hall

Great serie " the 10" although my arthritis doesn't always agree with the speed... i love the approach. Thanks Mate!

I wonder how you actually suppose us intermediate players to work on that one here Bradley. Should we try to learn every level and then execute it in the run no matter how shitty it will be or should we just go until a certain point, master it as much as possible, and then move on level by level?

Goatrider

I improved a lot with 1 minute workout. This one looks so amazing too. Let’s work. 💪🎸

Hey Alessio, welcome!!

Bradley Hall

Hi! I’m new but I think that your work is great! Time for me to play again my guitar 😁

After many many years I want to chop off my right wrist and rig up a motorized picking mechanism
