"Under A Glass Moon" (Dream Theater) Solo Transcription & Lesson/Analysis
Added 2024-11-07 18:35:29 +0000 UTCOh boy, strap yourselves in 'cause this is probably the hardest solo we've studied yet!
The solo in Under A Glass Moon by Dream Theater is one of my absolute all-time favorites and one I still play often. It has an awesome, spacey vibe thanks to all the sexy Lydian licks and is a pretty substantial workout for even the most seasoned guitarist.
Even though the general standard of tabs for this is much better compared to many other solos I've covered so far, there's always still a bunch of details missing - so here's a complete, comprehensive transcription of this monster solo!
Good luck and don't forget to share your progress with everyone in the Discord server!

Interesting! I personally find it MUCH easier to play that specific run legato instead of picking (the difference is night and day), so maybe that's a work-around? I would also highly recommend switching to classical position to help with the big intervals as it makes the big reaches way easier. I hope that helps!

2024-12-26 02:22:08 +0000 UTCI've known how to play this solo for years, but that run that starts around 0:06 in the video here, with two notes per string going down to the next octave every two strings — I don't know why I can't get it clean. It's not picking related, because I can run two notes per string all the way up and down the strings much faster than that. It's something about the large interval and the jumps every two strings, it always sounds super sloppy when I do it. I can get it somewhat cleaner if I use the neck pickup, but I really want to nail down why I can't do it on the bridge pickup. Any ideas come to mind for me to try? (I'm a fairly advanced guitarist and the rest of the solo isn't that tough for me.)

2024-11-08 23:08:27 +0000 UTCGreat question! It's kind of trial-and-error, yes. I start by mapping out all the notes that I know are in the lack and then play around with the rhythms until it works. Sometimes it's obvious, like if there are clear phrases that are in groups of 5/7/11 etc, but other times you have to do your best guestimate!

2024-11-08 23:03:10 +0000 UTCCheers Joel! Deffo plan to do some Marty solo stuff when I'm done with all the big Megadeth solos

2024-11-08 23:00:06 +0000 UTCThanks for doing this one! Could you do a transcription of a short but fun solo from Infant Annihilator - Decapitation Fornication? It starts at ~1:29 (I know it might be hard to survive their songs for this long, but still it has a lovely modal vibe there.

2024-11-07 19:22:35 +0000 UTCThanks for doing a video on this song, it's always been on my bucket list. For that last lick with the 11-tuplets how did you figure that out when transcribing? I see this with Evan Bradley transcriptions as well, he has crazy tuplets and groupings in his tabs. Is it a matter of trial and error in GP to hear if it's in sync with the original audio? Or is there another way?
