I think the screenwriters thought that the audience would find the character of Willie Scott to be 'cute' and find her funny to be a damsel in distress most of the time and is begrudgingly helpful at other times. It just didn't work for audiences or, unfortunately, for Kate Capshaw who got the brunt of the hate for the weak writing. That's just one of several flaws in the story. The writers tried to incorporate every loony stereotype of Chinese gangsters and spooky Indian cults and this didn't propel the story forward for me. The end goal for Indy didn't seem worth the trouble. I'm really surprised that the Indiana Jones series got the green light to continue but I think that theater box office grosses were profitable enough to keep going, and we're fortunate that they did. I want to mention that even though it isn't too difficult to sync my Disney+ copy with your reaction videos AT THE START, not having an running timer showing the place in the film requires some calculating to figure out the difference in your reaction running time and the movie's running time if I have to stop at any point and then resume watching.
