I also personally don't mind the storyline with Monica and Ethan. Back then you didn't really see women with younger men on TV and maybe it was also to show that you can't always tell someone's age by their looks. I have, however, never really liked the fake Monica storyline. Why would you be friends with this person, even if they are "fun"? But about Monica and Ethan, while it definitely is "icky", Monica actually didn't break the law because 17 was/is the age of consent in New York. The actor who played Ethan, Stan Kirsch, was actually 27 here, only 4 years younger than Courteney Cox. Sadly he died by suicide in 2020 at age 51. Bicentennial is the 200th anniversary of a significant event. What Monica is specifically referring to is a series of celebrations during the mid-1970s that paid tribute to historical events leading up to the creation of the U.S. as an independent republic in 1776. Also, Joan Collins is an English actress who is currently married to Percy Gibson, 31 years her junior (though this is before she even met him) and before that she was married to Peter Holm, 14 years her junior. And in case you didn't get it, "Take off their hats!" and "Popes in a Volkswagen!" is just one of those jokes which starts with a question, like "How do you get the pope inside a Volkswagen?" "Take off his hat" (because it won't fit in the car). Fun facts: When Monica tells fake Monica her name is Dutch, fake Monica says "Mag ik deze dans van u?" It is one of the few instances in which Dutch is used correctly on American TV (as it is commonly substituted with German). Translated to English the line is "Can I have this dance with you?" During the end credits in E21 when Joey is auditioning, the casting directors are Kevin Bright, Marta Kauffman and David Crane, the creators and writers of Friends.
