DIRECTOR'S CUT: Therapist Reacts to SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE

How do you handle pressure, expectations, and finding your sense of self?

Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker, filmmaker Alan Seawright, and Cinema Therapy producer Sophie Téllez are reacting to Miles Morales and his journey in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. They discuss how Miles struggles to grow into himself and his power. Jono notes how much “shoulding” Miles endures, and Alan and Sophie nerd out about the groundbreaking animation. And Alan wants to go to Lord and Miller film school.

Hi, I saw a fantastic movie called The Fall (2006) and it 90% the best shots in cinema. Photography is stunning and amazing and full of simbolism and the story is beatiful, a story within a story. The relationship is beatiful. An Opera of a movie, shot in so many locations, even my home country Shile for it's spectacular desert. And I'm sure it'd make Alan cry in the best way, I was sobbing as a baby :)

The Greatest Shot in Cinema History: When we choose to confront our fears and are descending to find the core of our truth, we arrive at a place where, without changing direction, we stop descending are start ascending.

Asymetra

We need a short movie of Alan and Sophie riding around in the minivan blasting 90s rap, please 🤣. Sophie is such a pleasure to have on the show!

SaucyJTD

This movie is absolutely gorgeous. And Miles is by far my favorite Spiderman. (I do love Gwen too tho!)

31:35 My description of the symbolism of the Best Scene in Cinema History is that he’s taking the leap of faith while rising to the occasion

Colette B

We'll probably wait for the next film in the series.

Cinema Therapy

Ok but when are you guys going to do Across the Spiderverse???

Leigh Caroline Huggins

I will never be over how at the end (timestamp 33:20ish on this video) when Miles is going up the machine with the goober, he swings up and around to the spot *the same way the first Peter did* at the beginning of the movie. Which is why Peter B and Gwen are like "we did not teach him that" It's just such a nice touch to me, that even the Spiderman who died, who couldn't mentor Miles the way he would've wanted, still taught him something that he used when he found his feet.

Magnus Taliesin

Amen.

In case anyone who's younger wonders, "finding yourself" is a life-long process if you are paying attention. Growing and changing for the better is *often* awkward no matter what your age. Be kind to yourself and just keep going. Momentum is everything.

LISAMACnCHEESE

You're so welcome!

Cinema Therapy

Thank you so much for this video! I really needed the message, so it felt good to hear it from you guys. I'm struggling a lot with finding myself lately, so this video came at the perfect time

Lara

This would be a great "watch party" movie

Deb Kunkel

Spielberg who? That ain't the SeaWright!

Kevin Lattanzio

👍👍

Darcie Daniels

and not in a creepy way!

From now on, every time I hear the CSI (edit: Law and Order! Doh) "dun dun" sound I'm going to picture Sophie giving a side-eye

Neurotic Cow

I am not having a mental image of Jono doing an impression of Gollum having an argument with Mickey Mouse... XD Alan you've also hugged Sophie after the channel has reached 1million subs and Jono was in that grouphug, so that kind of counts ^-^ And Alan, you've touched our lives more than Spielberg ever has. No, you really did, you're amazing.

Loki Dokey

I bet your casual disclosure of Alan's habit to touch people didn't make it to YouTube. The list is long and you can add me to it. 😭😭😭

I think one of my favourite moments in the movie, (which was brought to my attention through Tumblr) is when Miles is standing on his uncle's shoulders, then on his dad's. On his uncle's shoulder, he held with hands on his ankles, but he wobbles, the grip isn't secure and he has to work hard to keep his own balance. Then, on his dad's shoulders, he is held tightly in place, his footing is sure and he completely trusts his dad to be his brace. You can really see it side by side. Some people say it's just the physicality difference between the uncle and dad, but their models were so intentional. You could even get into how Miles looks more like his uncle than his dad, body wise, and how his dad probably saw that too and decided to not make the same mistake he made with his brother. I just... this team, man. They're so good.

Tif

So good to see Sophie! Other than through her snarky comments that mysteriously end up on the screen.

Oh my GOSH This was the first film released with a Stan Lee cameo after he died and I sat in the theater and SOBBED at that scene. Such a beautiful film, message, the animation, everything about this movie, even its flaws, is perfect. Especially the comic book coloring and animation with the closeup frames like the spider bite. Sheer perfection.

Natalie Carbone

Ooh, yes, that flying scene is spectacular and the score there is perfection. When my oldest was 3, that scene would always make him cry because the music and visuals are so emotionally impactful. (He takes after his dad, I guess??) - Alan

Cinema Therapy

I ADORE the editing on this episode!!!

Sarukana

As someone from the PNW, leave my sandals and socks combination alone 😂

Lucy

Did she drop a low key Dungeons and Daddies ref? I heard her mention "Henry Oak" and I was like wait what? If so, yes! I'm here for it!

Chelsea Seachord

For the best shot in cinema, I'm not sure about best shot, but the first flying scene in How to Train Your Dragon, is amazing! I would say that is the best score ever. It gives all the scared, exhilarated energy of flying and almost crashing. The only other score that could maaaaybe be better is the Avenger's theme.

Stephan Stennett

All three of you covered everything I loved about this movie and why I keep going back to it whenever I am deal of doubt and lack of self-confidence. And in regard to greatest shots in cinematic history, would you guys be willing to cover the final running scene in the film 1917? When you combined the music with the visual scope of the landscape with all the struggles and trauma that Lance Corporal Schofield suffered up to that point, it is one of the most cathartic feelings I ever felt in a movie and it is why 1917 is one of my favorite war movies ever.

Alexander Filippini

I could LISTEN to you talk about the animation of this for another 10 hours. I kid you not....I think I lost my breath in this movie the first time I watched it because I couldn't deal with the beauty. I love art but I don't know anything about animation...all I knew is this was absolutely ground breaking, stunning and would have taken FOREVER. I think I've mentioned this before but if it helps...I think people do appreciate effort. Especially if it's collaborative and has your own stamp. In sorry to be a typical millennial...but when I found out why the simpsons seemed so flawless was because it would take 11 hour days and about 20 rewrites of each episode I fell in love either it all over again. I imagine it must be hard to take those hits all the time but even Spielberg might not hit the same as something you have made...it just depends on the audience. For example...the sound of silence by disturbed is my favourite thing to listen to ever. I know the original song by Simon and Garfunkel is gorgeous, a classic and beautiful in its own right, but it doesn't hit my soul and make me cry like the disturbed version. Sorry one last thing...I'm a little sad on the slander against bumbags (fanny packs). I have a notepad, my phone, a pen, and panadol in mine. Mother/nurse/ADHD requirements in place. Hoooooow....dare you. Thanks again for a beautiful video. Really made me think as usual. Bit of course this one hit harder....the message you sent was beautiful but also its just a stunning movie. I felt like a kid watching it...I'd never seen anything like it.

Ahhh, another person who loves to torment Alan with the prequels. Let's be friends! - Jono

Now that Cavill is done I want to do a Hero Psych for Superman in Zach Snyder's JL trilogy

Awww.

I love that.

You're a freaking champion!

Cinema Therapy

Thank you for the touches Alan!!!

I love sophie's intro!!

Whew...ascending through descension. Where was this 10 years ago when I professionally stalled out? It took me 6 years to realize that what I thought I had failed at wasn't actually MY failure. It was the environment surrounding the program I was building that failed the program...not me. I can't even begin to explain the weight that lifted in that moment of realization. It was palpable and profound. And now the falling up shot will be on my technology backgrounds too!! :)

Janese Carstens

With the question, "how do I know if I'm ready?" my immediate response is that you know you're ready when you stop asking that question and just leap.

Angie

We may debate the best movie ever, but you guys are the best cinema therapy ever!

Bravehome

Just sat down to go through my email and saw the notification for this. Really excited to sit down and listen through it - I love these long-form videos. Any chance y'all plan on doing Man of Steel? Y'all referenced that movie a few times here and there. Or - this one occurred to me since 2022 is its 40th anniversary - what about the single most emotional blockbuster of cinema history? E.T.! (I was reminded of that one after watching a recent vid from media critic Lindsay Ellis). I assume y'all are probably very familiar with her work - if not, y'all should check out some of her video essays!

Amy Petty

I loved that movie!!

Maggie Avilla

Here’s a great cinematic scene worthy of inclusion of greatest scenes ever. I’m not going to say what it is. It is so iconic. Here goes: Sand. I hate sand. It’s rough and coarse and it gets everywhere. Oh. Sorry best cringe-worthy scene ever!

Darcie Daniels

Never clicked on a patron video so fast! So awesome!

Darcie Daniels
