DIRECTOR'S CUT: Therapist Reacts to THE BAD GUYS

Are the bad guys naturally bad or are they socialized that way? Have you ever been given a second chance?

Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright are reacting to Ocean's Eleven for kids, The Bad Guys! They discuss why the bad guys never had a chance to be good but how they warm up to the idea of change for the better. Jono analyzes the trope of bad being cool and how the bad guys deal with fear, insecurity, denial, and self-loathing. And they both rave about how cool the animation is. This movie drips cool!

Two years later, I still hope this happens! Would also give me an excuse to actually rewatch it for the first time since I was a kid …

"pretending to be a good person until whoopsie I am one" ah, The Good Place does that too and it's SO GOOD.

Sadly, many of these ‘choices’ can be made from inherited secular influences, and not those of Scripture. Paul warns us in Colossians 2:8 “Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ”. But we learn the will of God/Christ through Scripture. Those who do not study/pray on it are doomed to choose poorly….

I'm often disappointed in the life choices of people in my family who consider themselves conservative Christians. Even and especially sometimes when it has nothing to do with how they view me.

The movie is terriff (now that my kid is 30, I'm out of touch with kid movies) and your analysis of it is delightful, BUT--guys, guys, guys, "THE OLD GUY" from "Ocean's Eleven"? That, my sons, was CARL REINER! Here's a taste, and you can look up more about him (BTW, his kid is Rob Reiner, who used to be a pretty good movie director before he lost his mind to left-wing politics): https://youtu.be/wGEOjxtQtWc

Plummeting to your death laughing at your bestie would indeed be a fabulous way to die

Omen the Black Cat

K10 that is very keen observation skills! 💸💰

Speaking of bad guys going good, have you considered Wreck-it-Ralph? A lot of sugar rush but I'm sure Jono can run with the "feeling good is not achieved by gaining acknowledgment and approval (the medal) but by experiencing genuine friendship. Plus there's a really cool group therapy session in it. "I'm bad and that's good".

This was a fun episode. I'm so gonna draw the scene you've discribed what would happen if you both fall to death XD. But before that I'm gonna watch this movie, haven't seen it before and you guys made me excited for it. Jono, I'm down for 3:10 to Yuma. Actually, I'm down for whatever you want to make an episode of as long as you both have fun. Watching you both having a good time, goofing around or talking nonsense makes every episode worth it :]

It's coming! We're actually filming it next week, so stay tuned!

OMG Alan. Furries. Why do you even know this word? 😂🤣 I have a confession to make. I am a creator on Patreon and for some strange reason a lot of my clientele self-identifies as furry.

We've had enough comments that I'm considering the ep now. That said, it'd be about the two leads, because the Yin and Yang is so compelling.

I would ABSOLUTELY watch a Villain Therapy: Ben Wade from 3:10 to Yuma video.

I give you permission to screenshot this and send it to them. :)

Neurotic Cow

The sweetness with a little spice, the assumption of good, yes yes, I agree! The casual walking around with massive wealth sounds pretty good too XD

Kris Mahoney

Please tell the studios this! It'll make it more likely we can get movie stars as guests!!!

Alan Seawright

We live but to serve!

Alan Seawright

It's good times.

I legitimately aspire to be that old lady.

This episode drips in coolness. Also, yet another movie I haven't seen that now I have to watch because you made me curious.

Neurotic Cow

What happened to the lilo and stitch episode?

I think an important point you made is you can still love someone and not approve of their lifestyle choices. You mentioned a radicalized choice such as becoming a Nazi. But there are less obvious choices a loved one can make that can be challenging to deal with. From my framework, I would say this -- you can love the sinner without loving the sin. The most difficult challenge to this is where you make the differentiation between moderate and radical behavior. A most chilling scripture (my framework) in this regard is Mark 7:7, where Jesus said "In vain they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men". What changes a person makes to their lives may seem moderate and acceptable in a secular world, but those changes may put someone in great danger in the spiritual world. But I agree that interactions concerning such changes should be conducted with respect and love.

Bravehome

I honestly cannot wait for what comes next. I love this film!

Drew Cornog

Really liked this movie. Also while there's an obvious Oceans 11 plot its also got a lot of Lupin the Third in there with the characters and dynamics and style.

Michael Emerson

Sean here! I’m a little surprised to hear my name at the end so that made my day, but you saying the last name right the last time was even more surprising! I usually tell people “don’t bother” cuz of how easy it is to butcher! 😅
