DIRECTOR’S CUT: Therapist Ranks MARVEL Bromances

How do you know if a friendship is strong and everlasting? Do you put in the work to maintain your friendships?

Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright are ranking Marvel bromances, brought to you by the healthiest bromance on the internet. They’re taking a look at ride and die besties and some unexpected friendships that were made along the way: Tony and Rhodey, Steve and Bucky, Bucky and Sam, Peter and Ned, Rocket and Groot, and Strange and Wong (the Benedicts). They’re ranking the bromances from least bro-y to most bro-y aka the healthiest friendships… can you guess which one the therapist said? Friendships take a lot of work, but sometimes there’s natural chemistry. Expect great banter, bickering, secret handshakes, and tears. Always tears.

AGREEEEEEEEEEEEEEED! JD and Turk walked so Gus and Shawn could run! Hahaha. 😂

Meg W.

“Rhodey just has to figure out who he is.” Me: Ha. Yeah he LITERALLY changed between movie one and two……(lol actor change)

Meg W.

For Sisterhood of the travelling pantses - see Audrey and Morgan from the spy who dumped me. Trash movie (I love it tho) but epic friendship. They are beautiful together, healthy and loyal and unyielding.

Bec B

Nooooo! 😭 Ned is way too sweet and lovable. It would be heartbreaking for him to become a villain. Of course, we're hoping Peter and Ned find each other again and continue their delightful bromance, secret handshake and all.

Cinema Therapy

Because both Spidermen (Tobey and Andrew) have had friends who become villains. There's no other reason why they would mention it in the movie just for the sake of mentioning it. They are planting the seeds for future developments. I thought about it as soon as I saw the movie but just now I went online and saw there are several theories as to which villain he will become.

Kate Ackerley

Why would he, though? It wouldn't make any sense for Ned to become a villain because he resented Peter not honoring his wishes. But beside that just being a BAD reason, why are you so sure he would become a villain in the first place?

Amy Petty

I love Peter and Ned... pity Ned will probably become a villain after No way home, or so I'm guessing. the fact that Peter did not respect Ned's wishes will be part of the resentment or something like that.

Kate Ackerley

I mean, it's a fair point that there's a thing in this culture where men have to "man sh*t up" when it comes to language. This is why we have stupid and unnecessary phrases like "man purse" or "man bun" and, yes, "bromance." "Bromance" sounds fun and silly, but sure, it 100% does exist because of a toxic element underpinning the expression of emotion and anything to do with male relationships. Men *should* be able to have deep platonic friendships with other men without having to "reassure" anyone (society, their bros, themselves) of the safely non-romantic nature of the friendship with hip vocabulary. It would be great if men could just talk about friendships the way women do without having to dress it up with silly code words.

Amy Petty

Exactly. Therapist ranks platonic relationships. Are they though.... I'm rooting for Po and Tigress. Love to see their off-spring. They'll be like zedonks.

Oh Maui and Moana! Platony FTW!

Cinema Therapy

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants begs to differ :)

Cinema Therapy

Women just call it friendship.

Andrea Aase

Heck yeah I want Jono to rate the therapist from Falcon and the Winter Soldier!

Terra the Lioness

How about some boy-girl things that are not romcoms? Like Po & Tigress or or Wreck-It-Ralph & Penelope?

Speaking of bromances, as a fellow elder millennial, I'd love to see you guys do an episode on The Sandlot. Not just because of its friendships, but also how their childhood imaginations lead to them envisioning the Beast as some epic monster, how they portray heroes/legends in both Babe Ruth and Benny, and how Scotty tries to connect with his stepdad.

SeaSaltChips

The therapy session in the interrogation room. As a horse trainer I feel compelled to throw in my two cents. The therapists asks them "who wants to go first" and meets resistance. So she offers them an exercise that is far more uncomfortable: "t he soul-gazing". They immediately shift to "I like this one". This is horse-training 101. Make the desired behaviour easy, and when they opt out you offer them a harder exercise that is mentally-emotionally more uncomfortable. Then you go back to what you're actually training the horse for and voila! The horse is now far more willing to participate in what in comparison feels like a breeze. I use this in horse training all the time. Fun to see her do this with these two broncos.

Someone said rank worst to best movie therapist. YES PLEASE!!!

Desireé (Speak91)

This is awesome, and just proves how great Marvel is.

Ayesha Ali

This was all delightful! Only quibble I have is that Steve and Bucky aren't a bromance - there's no "b" there lol. Seriously though, in the first movie Bucky is straight up the damsel-in-distress role. Peggy has far more agency than he does. I'd love to see an evaluation of MCU parent/child relationships.

Abigail Friedman

You are great. Fried or Freid... hahaha

Sharon aka Pocozy

I was right there with you, Alan - crying as Peter said goodbye to MJ and Ned. Perhaps another element you could explore within the MCU canon is the non-romantic male/female relationships, the power of 'office husband/office wife' for want of a better term. Steve and Nat for example. Yes, Steve IS my favorite and I just want you two to talk about him more!

Eclectic Mayhem

Antwone Fisher - Dr. Davenport (need a therapist reacts on this too!) To the Bone - Dr. Beckham Anger Management - Dr. Rydell

Lynettra

Love this take on Marvel movies!

Ruth Popkin

If we're allowing TV into the conversation, best bromance in history is obviously JD and Turk, followed closely by Shawn and Gus

Traxathon

Please please do Star Wars Friendships!!!!

Kate Larson

Donnie Darko (or just reacting to this movie), Good Will Hunting, Girl, Interrupted, and It's Kind of a Funny Story. I know you have reacted to Good Will Hunting previously, but ranking would be interesting.

Holly✌️

Yes yes yes Jono should break down the movie therapist!

Angie

We've been toying around with the idea of doing a therapist ranking episode... who would you want to see included in the list?

Cinema Therapy

Sorry, I'm watching and commenting as I go. Still, I'm not too fond of Imalda, even though it is purely due to her awesome acting skills as Delores Umbridge. Can we do a rank of worst to best movie therapist?

Holly✌️

The sneeze announcement made me cackle!

Holly✌️

Literally squealed seeing this! So excited to watch!
