DIRECTOR'S CUT: Therapist Reacts to FINDING NEMO — Parenting and Trauma

Why are some parents overprotective? How do you cope with trauma in a healthy way?

Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright are diving into the big ol’ blue with Finding Nemo. They discuss Marlin’s parenting and the differences between helicopter parenting and healthy parenting. Jonathan talks about Marlin’s trauma and how it shapes his relationship with Nemo. Alan explains why Finding Nemo is another Pixar Perfect Picture and why it's important to let his kids fail. Is anyone surprised that Alan cries?

Being diagnosed later in life with ADHD, and now going through the diagnosis process with my son as a child, I have to watch myself so that I don’t become a helicopter parent. Knowing the trauma I have from being undiagnosed for so long, I want to prevent my son from going through what I did and from having the lingering effects of other’s responses to symptoms as an albatross around his neck. I know that I can’t put him in a bubble, but gosh dang it do I want to mama bear over anyone who would hurt him, especially for his neurodiversity. I feel both called out and seen simultaneously by this episode.

I swear they get better every episode 🖤🥰

Omen the Black Cat

I’ve been using Finding Nemo as a cautionary tale for 10 years, since my son’s initial diagnosis of Autism (the Global Developmental Delay to Learning Disability came later). My job is to give him the tools to live his life to the fullest, but he has always craved stasis. We’re the ones pushing him out of his comfort zone (and reminding him to eat…) while keeping him and others safe. Finding Dory destroys me #CryingMoreThanAlan

Love that!

One of my favorite quotes is " Never feel sorry for raising dragon slayers in a time of actual dragons."

Am I the only one who wants a Hitchcock’s “The Birds" themed/parody shirt that just says ‘go away birdies!’ on it?

One of my all-time favorite childhood films!! Thank you for doing this one. Fantastic episode as always

Honestly, it’s no wonder Crush has such a laid back parenting style. After all, he is 150 years old; he’s probably raised at least half as many kids as that, and had to let them go their own way without knowing where it will lead them. As a result, he knows exactly what do and is about as expert as a parent can be.

"...The only thing you can control is yourself." -Jono Unless you have a form of OCD, then control of yourself gets a little complicated. 😅 I've lost many a fight with myself. I identify with Nemo, in that half the time my dad was extremely overprotective, due to a personal experience in his own childhood, so wouldn't let me do normal stuff that was fine, but then I got neglected/abandoned in situations I shouldn't have been (wasn't entirely his fault either). It's taught me a lot of things about my own parenting, and walking that fine line of being terrified of what will happen to my kid, and being fine with things. Recalling my own upbringing, things that I recognize now were out of whack, and what might have been normal, with a heavy amount of reading parenting and psychology, 😅 I think I'm adjusting my parenting fairly... okay? I guess? So far thing bad has happened, my kid has plenty of fun, the normal scrapes and bruises, bee sting, scared of things it's normal to be scared of, and stand up for herself pretty valiantly. So... Yeah. Parenting is a hell of a rollercoaster ride. 😅

Lady Lost

Marlin, I think, is the antithesis to Frollo and Mother Gothel (probably more Mother Gothel). He’s overly protective and pretty possessive, but he actually cares about his child and gets anxious about anything happening to him outside of the bubble he created for him.

One of my favorite Pixar films (partly cause my mom was a dental hygienist and every office she worked in had a tropical aquarium). I always loved Marlin's journey and loved you're explanation of why it I have loved it.

Thanks for this episode! Again, you're shining a new light on a movie I underestimated. 👍
