DIRECTOR'S CUT: Therapist Reacts to TREASURE PLANET
Added 2023-07-24 15:00:11 +0000 UTC
How do you connect and open up to others? How do you get over fear of rejection?
Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright are joined by guest, post-production supervisor and editor and person who makes them look insane (but we all love him for it), David Sant! They react to one of David’s favorite movies, Treasure Planet. They talk about Jim seeking adventure and a father figure and how John Silver complicates and fulfills both. Jonathan explains why people push others away and sabotage healthy relationships. Alan revels in Treasure Planet’s pure adventure filmmaking, and David shares why this movie means so much to him. And they delight in the squishy comfort of a dad bod hug.
I also absolutely adore Delbert lol

I haven't watched this since I was a kid, what a throwback. David is so much fun, glad to see more of him!

David is fantastic. Jono and Allen laughed so much in this episode, and it was amazing!

The humour and unhinged behavior in this episode is just so refreshing and hilarious.
Treasure Planet is so underrated and I love it so much

Sexual and romantic relationships are two very different things. So like I’m asexual aromantic so I don’t want to have sex with or date anyone, but in his case he would be open to having a romantic relationship with either gender, but it wouldn’t be a sexual relationship.

David said asexual but Bi-romantic. What is the difference or distinction between what those two thing are?

Thank you for gifting us more David!! I grew up in the weird Disney movie era too and it’s nice to see those movies and our generation being appreciated lol

Aww, you're welcome guys! Happy to help in my own small way. It was also awesome to be thanked during an episode about one of my fav Disney movies! My husband and I have always thought that Treasure Planet is an overlooked gem. (Although...Jim Hawkins is great and everything but let's hear it for Captain Amelia, voiced so wonderfully by Emma Thompson! :)

Ok, but David is absolutely for me. We need more David. He is hysterical and has awesome cheekbones. What more could you ask for?

I loved this episode guys. I want more David!!! What David said about giving someone a thought out complement is so true. I am an elementary music teacher and it is so important to give students praise, especially for the students where praise can sometimes be hard to find. I have always been seen as a bright and bubbly person (oof if only), and I also know I can be A LOT sometimes. When people have told me that I just make them smile or happy by being me, it makes me so overjoyed.

No, but David is totally right about the whole ace-awakening thing regarding Jim. I cannot explain it, but it was the exact same for me. Maybe part of it was thinking Jim was the best and so cool, and then all my friends were talking about kissing him and I was giving all the side-eye possible. Like yes he's amazing and I want to giggle at him and get married. What does *kissing* have to do with it lol.

I was finally able to watch this episode and WOW! One of my favorites. I really did feel seen, just like Jono said (that people told him). The topics that were talked about resonated so much with me, and while it was sometimes hard to hear, I feel like it was genuine and needed. I appreciate it a LOT. David was a woonnderrrffuuulll guest! Please have him more (if he wants to of course). The team that you have working on these episodes is golden. Send my love every single one of them. Thank you!

Can you have David on the show more often? As a fellow asexual, I LOVED the representation! (And as a fan of the show, I just loved the energy that he brought to this episode! It just felt so much more... loose? Relaxed?)
Thank you for always being so aware of us, Jono. It really means a lot for a community that so often gets overlooked. (And also, I totally get why David would be romantically attracted to that stepdad/uncle figure, he sounds amazing!)
Thank you for this episode <3

“You have to be you, loudly, wherever you are.” 🔥👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 Also, after Jono noticed that Silver’s character design represents his inner conflict (half hard boiled, half genuine and sentimental), I started noticing that anytime Silver is being manipulative or domineering, his cyborg side is facing the camera/Jim (even cyborg hand offered for handshakes). Whenever he’s being kind and looking out for Jim, his “real self” is literally presented. I’ve loved this movie for a decade and never noticed 😱

I have been hoping you guys would do an episode on this movie because it is one of my all time favorite movies, I used to relate to it when I was younger and as I've grown and changed I now relate to it as an adult and it still hits just as hard. Thanks for doing this episode ❤️

I love this movie - one of my favourites too!! I wonder Jono, seeking imitation love, is that also normal to do through the teenage stage when we are looking to 'find ourselves'?

How is it that Alan and Jono can take a movie that I've never seen and wasn't the least bit interested in and then win me over by the end and make me want to watch it? If I could sell the formula I'd be a millionaire, what a banger of an epsode!

The animation style was called "Deep Canvas" is developed on Tarzan and used again on Treasure Planet but was wildly expensive. So Disney didn't market Treasure Planet and sent it out to die in theaters so they could justify never using it again. Aldo, Delbert Doppler was the one to give birth to the children he had with the captain as well. Such a good man, husband, and father he evens bears the children so the captain doesn't have to compromise her own career. Go Delbert. Go Delbert.

Aww wow, I didn’t expect so much aroace representation in this! To David- as a fellow grey-aroace with bi preferences- I see you and get you 100% 😊
This movie is one of the beesstt examples of surrogate father relationships! It’s completely underrated and I wish more people would talk about this film. I used to get emotional watching this as a teen/college student who needed some good father figure support to fill a specific void in me at the time, and clearly I’m not alone in that.
I’d like to echo support to bring David on as a guest star again, for sure. And as always, another very well done episode~

This is such an underrated film. Some fun tidbits the directors John Musker and Ron Clements were basically the kings of the Disney Renaissance and wanted to make this film from the get go but were shot down multiple times in favor of other projects such as Little Mermaid, Aladdin etc. Then after all the success they get the chance to make this film but it performs poorly. But it will live forever in our hearts and the niche Youtube channels!

I was talking with a friend over the weekend about my "originally planned" career path. Circa 8th grade or so after finding out all the specialities that fall under the Umbrella of Anthropology, I toyed with the idea of being a linguist or folklorist before settling on archivist. Now, life intervened, and that was not the path I landed on, but I told my friend that it was probably influenced 90% by growing up watching Atlantis 🤣 By the time I was double majoring in History & Anthropology, I was convinced I'd be more like Abigail Chase in National Treasure than Milo Thatch, lol. Now, life intervened and crushed my dreams, but it all worked out for the best. If it had all gone "as planned", then during COVID shutdowns I probably would have been manning the boiler room 👩🔧 👩🏫

Okay, which Disney villain does old snooty Alan sound like? It’s killing me…
Scar? No.
Frollo? No…
Clayton?
Actually… yeah, I think it’s Clayton. Sorry, Alan. 😅

Also, can David be on more of these? He's great! Similar humor so it just gets bounced around between Alan and Jono and it is SO entertaining.

10:01 Jono is broken. Made him utterly speechless. Side Note: No, David is not at the head of that queue, I'm sure. The description of Delbert is 100% accurate. I'm not in said queue but, I know enough people ARE in that queue.
