DIRECTOR'S CUT: Movie Family Therapy: FREAKY FRIDAY

Have you tried role-playing (not the RPG kind) or perspective taking?

Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright are taking a look at Freaky Friday through the theme of perspective taking. It’s a legitimate therapy technique, and Jonathan explains how it’s used in a real setting. They talk about the assumptions and hurtful behaviors that culminate in Tess and Anna switching bodies. Alan praises the performances from Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan because they’re each acting as the other actor acting as the character. And they do it so well!

The perspective change is always the hardest. My mum used to say that my little sister was getting upset about the stupidest things. I kept having to remind her that this was the first time she had these experiences whereas my mum had decades to experience things, make mistakes, try new things

I listen to older CT episodes while winding down for bed. Because I listen and don't watch the screen, I didn't actually see the chair and shirt switch until the end of this episode. I was surprised how much it threw me. 😂

I was OBSESSED with this movie back in the day. Jamie Lee Curtis is brilliant and I also just love Lindsay Lohan. The music was awesome, and “EARTHQUAKE!!!!” is always a classic inside joke with my siblings haha

Meg W.

"We're now canceled." As an Asian, that whole bit cracked me up.

I really like the Sunday Dinner relationship analogy; it's a succinct way of saying what my friend has been trying to relay to me for a while. I think the reason I have trouble with it, though, is that I don't really know how to have that relationship with my mother when she's genuinely interested in knowing everything but unable to handle the information. I suppose it needs to come with a boundary -- "I'm ok with sharing this information, and it's not open for input or discussion."

And the shirt change? It's so Freaky Friday! 😂

Cinema Therapy

I don't know how I feel about the seat change.

As a single mom of a 15 year old, I really needed this. I realized I need to do a better job of taking my teen's perspective. Thanks guys. That was uncomfortable, but also helpful.

I haven’t seen this movie since it came out and that scene made me cry right now! 😭❤️

Darcie Daniels

I REALLY want a therapy session with Jono throwing tissues as flags

Omen the Black Cat

A really good episode! This is such a good remake and Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsey Lohan are amazing in it. I’m also glad you pointed out the Chinese stereotype characters. I’d like to add to that. Be Kind, Rewind, a YouTube channel I also follow, has done several video essays on the topic Oscars So White. In one of those essays, she discusses the limited roles that are available to women of color. The fact that Rosalind Chao, one of the stars of the Joy Luck Club, was still taking roles like this in 2003 in criminal.

Lindlee Bullock

This is one of the rare times that I actually prefer the remake to the original, though both movies are great. Thanks for the vulnerability, Alan. That part always makes me tear up, too. Y'all crushed it, as always!

Disney has remade this movie (and The Parent Trap) a few times, but I do like this version much better.

Angelina

Awww yay Freaky Friday!! I remember seeing this in theatres with my mom and (newly) step-dad, so that was.. relatable in terms of family dynamics haha 😅 But I wasn’t old enough to be a teen yet. Seeing the film again as a teen, and as an adult now, has neat perspective changes of their own too. Love that you guys did this one! It makes me want to watch it again.

I have loved this movie since it came out in elementary school. My mom loved it too, but alwasy viewed it as something other people needed to do, not us. Now, watching this video, I realize it might have more importance to us than I thought.

I'm a RPG player/GM and actually have a body swap technique I use in my games. The people that want to swap sit in circle, hold hands, and then look into the eyes of the person that want to swap bodies with. It's fan created because I liked perspective taking growing up but wanted the mechanic to be simple. I've been wondering what you would be thinking of for a different technique that cinema therapy might use to change it.

Bryan

I love this movie so much! I was so excited to see the notification! Thanks for another thoughtful and fun review! ☺️💙

Tiana Horsey-Daydreamer

Yes, thanks for giving love to one of my favourite childhood movies. Jamie and Lindsay were so convincing, that I thought that they'd really switched bodies for years!
