Love this review, I joined to find the strengths builder you mentioned. Is there anything similar?

Coming back quite late to this so I don't know if you guys will see it. This movie along with its manga is my favorite piece of media and I really appreciate your perpespective. You kind of nailed it when you said this story could be told in 40 minutes and that its less for entertainment. The director (Naoka Yamada) is repeatedly focused on "illiciting the feeling of her work, purposefully muddying narrative details if it better allows the emotions to come across." There's another film of hers, Liz and the Blue Bird, which is even slower and takes place in 1 high school following 2 people. It's about as small in scale as you can get and I still think its fantastic. (Also a really really interesting film focused on a single unhealthy relationship, but not sure its down your alley) Her films will do what they need to in order to procure a certain experience. That takeaway from these kind of films is absolutely feelings and ideas rather than the story. This may also be why you find the music off in certain moments. There's an uncomfortable mix of emotions when happy music plays in a sad scene or the like that I feel adds some depth and subtext to the feelings of these characters even if it doesn't really match the scene itself. It all adds to the strongest feeling of catharsis at the end of the film. Can't find the strengths builder for this film you mentioned, but appreciate this a ton and your honest opinions!
