DIRECTOR'S CUT: Is THE MATRIX TRILOGY a Philosophy 210 course?

How can you find purpose and direction for your life? How can the choices you make help you find purpose and meaning?

Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright dive down the rabbit hole of the Matrix trilogy. They discuss the impacts of nature vs nurture on our lives, how we can learn and progress in whatever circumstances we face or whatever our past looks like. And also how utterly cool some of the action scenes are, Neo as a Christ allegory, and how the Wachowskis always crank it up to 11.

Well, guess I'm just gonna go ahead and add The Matrix movies to my Christmas movie list.

Great delivery at the end, Alan. Had to clap :) My husband is an LEO, and he got a kick out of delivering the "Well hello, Mr. Anderson" inflection at a traffic stop right after the release to a man of the same name. Poor guy hadn't seen it, and looked at him like what the heck is goin' on with you? He's seen a few practical jokes in his career too, but the best involved a roadside electrical sign that had been placed along one of our slow, small, county highways as a speed-limit reminder. At 4am one morning someone rekeyed it to read "Wake up, Neo. The Matrix has you." Imagine reading that on a dark highway in the middle of nowhere. Perked my day up! :)

I just wanted to say this because I don't usually get a chance too, but I have always loved the 3rd movie, it's even comparable to the first to me

Right, just wondering if their busy lives permitted the viewing, and also feeding the dream that there might be an episode on it. Thank you for responding.

Vicki Lenoir

Yes, but this episode came out before that

So, did Jono and Alan watch the 4th one ?

I just got the point of the sunglasses when you were talking about all the work involved in making them work on film, it's not so the characters can be secret agents or because they thought it looked cool, but just to have reflections. It underscores how the matrix is a reflection of reality and probably helps to prime the audience to a reflective, self-aware mood. Separate thought, I wonder how much damage these movies have done to the processes of enlightenment and therapy because of people taking away from them that you need only ONE red pill, a single insight that changes how you look at the world, and then you're done, you're seeing the truth and the light and there's no further realities you're still ignorant of?

The humans as batteries idea was studio interference. The original idea was humans were being used as additional processing power. But the studio thought that was too complicated.
