DIRECTOR'S CUT: MEGAMIND and Nice Guy™ Syndrome

What is the difference between niceness and goodness? Megamind is all about one guy who doesn't understand the difference, and another who learns the difference.

Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright talk about Nice Guy Syndrome, especially as seen in the character of Hal/Tighten (Jonah Hill) and how he thinks he deserves or can earn Roxanne's affection. But also how Megamind (Will Ferrell) learns what it really means to be good, how Roxanne (Tina Fey) and Metro Man (Brad Pitt) go against stereotypes, and the absolutely fabulous humor in this movie. They also give some advice for recovering "Nice Guys" or guys who realize they've maybe internalized some of these ideas, especially around romantic relationships, and want to actually be good instead of just "nice."

I love this review, but I also feel not great because once upon a time, I was a “nice gal” to someone and I was (unintentionally) really creepy. I’ve grown since then and am working on forgiving myself for those past misdeeds, but it’s hard to do. I know I have changed, but still it’s hard to let go f the fact that in that story, I was the villain. Still though, that means I can speak from the “nice gal” side of things and I can confirm, for me at least, it was a confidence issue. I had low self esteem at the time and it was very much the thought process of “if I can get him to love me, then I will have worth.” Since realistically sing all this about myself, I have been working on my self esteem and self confidence while constantly reminding myself to respect others self determination. I have to tell myself that if someone rejects me, I need to respect that, but at the same time, not let it damage my self worth. It’s hard, but I am making strides forward. I still wish I could go back and apologize to the guy I creeped on though. So I’ll say it here; I’m sorry, Patrick. I was wrong.

The other thing that I love about this movie is; It's one of the few where "superman" doesn't become evil, he is just tired of being the one Everyone relies on, he is tired of being strong and it's up to the super smart person to take over or rather it's the only kids movie I know where brains are sorta praised and brawn isn't. Although one could still see Megamind as the most masterful evil genius, who ever lived. I mean, he did create Titan and I'm pretty sure that was never brought up, at least not to the majority of the people, including the police. He got away with completely manipulating the majority of the population.

Yes, "The Spee-I-der" is pretty much how I, my husband, and our two little girls have to say "spider" ... every ... time. And it never gets old! :)
