DIRECTOR'S CUT: What TOY STORY Got Right About Friendship

How can you build friendships that last to infinity and beyond?

Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright talk about the characteristics of strong friendships as shown by the characters in Pixar's Toy Story franchise, especially Woody and Buzz. These characters show what it's like to maintain friendship even when you disagree or face hard times. It's about supporting each other (even when you're having an existential crisis when you realize you're a toy), being real with each other (like telling your friend he's not a space ranger), caring for one another, and having awesome catchphrases.

I think I may be the only person who absolutely hated Toy Story, but I don't know if this is the movie's fault. In the first movie, Woody gets gaslighted to infinity and beyond by all the other toys, and my childhood was built on gaslighting, so watching the movie was so triggering for me that I couldn't enjoy the rest of it, even though it ultimately pivots away to a place where Buzz has a healthier, more realistic sense of self. There's a fine line, sometimes, between supporting someone and enabling them in unrealistic self-assessment, and I feel like popular narrative media often tends to push too hard in the direction of enablement. Despite my utter inability to watch this movie, I appreciate that it doesn't do that, and that instead both Woody's and Buzz's arcs involve accepting themselves and each other for who they really are.

I will land on Toy Story 4 is worth the undoing. It could be saved alone by the scene where Bonnie's toys hijack Dad's camper ... comedic therapy. Everyone loves a good drama where you experience the catharsis, but I tune in more for your laughter, guys, than your tears. :) P.S. And speaking of comedy, I love all the Toy Storys, but I have to say the funniest of them all was the TV special, Toy Story of Terror. If you haven't seen it, you must! It takes place after the third movie. And Mr. Pricklepants is my favorite toy. My husband and I frequently ask each other if we're classically trainined. :)
