DIRECTOR'S CUT: Therapist Reacts to DUNE

What happens when you try to control your child's path in life?

Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright take a look at Denis Villeneuve's adaptation of Dune and contrast Duke Leto's and Lady Jessica's approaches to parenting. Paul Atreides has some complicated relationships with his parents, dealing with intense expectations from his parents, control, some moments of positive and negative parenting, and a whole lot of sand. We talk about the importance of honoring your child's free will, how much we love Oscar Isaac, and geek out a bit about this sci-fi classic.

My parents were always a bit hippie, so I wasn't baptized (catholic) even though my parents and all my family was. I asked when I was small still and they told me that they wanted to choose for myself if I wanted to join any religion at all. Very grateful since I had my chanve to make up my mind before becoming agnostic. I also pierced my ear by myself since that was also up to me. Both grateful and not so much for that one xD

I only just got to this having only recently watched part 1 to then see part 2 in cinemas last week. Thanks to Jono for what you said about drawing boundaries with your parents. I’ve had to do this in the last year and feel lots of guilt from it. But I felt like it was my only option given years of being controlled, my path being set for me and being torn down. It was so helpful to hear that

Just saw Dune Part 1 in theaters on IMAX, can’t wait for Part 2 to come out in a few weeks! 🎥 🍿 I had seen the YouTube episode when it first came out, and had to come back and see the Director’s cut after watching the movie. 📚 About to start reading the books before Part 2, my son and I are so excited to dive into this world 😁
