DIRECTOR'S CUT: Villain Therapy: KILLMONGER from Black Panther with guest Stacey Harkey

How do you cope with the anger and pain of not belonging? What leads people down a path of revenge?

Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker, filmmaker Alan Seawright, and guest Stacey Harkey take a look at Michael B. Jordan’s powerful performance as Killmonger from Black Panther. They talk about Killmonger’s complicated relationship with revenge and justice, why he’s probably the best movie villain ever, and why the character resonates so strongly with Stacey. And they marvel at how inspiring and cool Michael B. Jordan is.

Me again. Killmonger says that T'Challah (representing Wakanda) has to pay for their withdrawal, meaning that Killmonger, through violence, must make Wakanda feel his and the world's pain and suffering. T'Challah does pay, but through humility, bearing the responsibility for Wakanda's indifference and withdrawal from the world's suffering, and sitting in the pain and suffering Wakanda's choices created in the world.

I'm also on Team Unobtainium. Consider Star Wars and George Lucas (I hope I'm getting this analogy correct) Lucas had a movie he wanted to make, but couldn't, because the visual effects technology didn't exist yet. Lucas's visual effects Unobtainium, when brought into existence, became ILM, which gave Lucas the visual effects technology to make the Star Wars he wanted all along.

Can you guys share your input on Daniel Kaluuya's character, W'Kabi? I was always intrigued by his shift from supporting T'Challa and maintaining the status quo to jumping ship and joining Erik's radical approach. That scene in the throne room, where he confirms Erik isn't lying about his heritage by showing everyone the royal ring, it seemed like he had also taken T'Chaka's deception rather personally. Also, after hearing Erik's wish to be buried at sea, I'm concern now: do you think his body could have landed in Namor's underwater kingdom?

I am so hoping he really isn't dead. I'd love to see a Kilmonger movie. What made Black Panther so great for me to watch was that 1) it didn't just deal with "fictional"" crisis (an alien is going to destroy half the universe), but brought a very real issue as the main motivator. And showed the struggle over how to respond and address it. Granted, it was done in a superhero way. But even as they fought, it was over much of that core issue of racism, slavery, stealing of cultural artifacts and how do we bring justice from that. And of course Michael B. Jordan and Chadwick Bosen brought both weight and coolness to their roles. I'd hate to think that we will never see at least one of them again in a Black Panther movie.

Looking forward to this! Always really liked killmonger, because despite his kind blatant name he definitely had more reason than like 99% of “villains” of the MCU to turn out that way. In my opinion, and I’m not pretending to understand where he comes from, that’s a type of trauma I cannot identify with personally, he let his morals get compromised by his need for revenge and so I can’t say he was wrong but I CAN say he was not right.
