DIRECTOR'S CUT: Ranking Relationships in SENSE AND SENSIBILITY

How do you tell the difference between infatuation and love?

Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright are taking a look at the movie adaptation of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility. Jonathan is ranking the couples from least healthy to most sumptuous. Yes, most sumptuous. The contenders are Elinor and Edward, Marianne and Willoughby, and Marianne and Brandon. They talk about the qualities to look for in love and a partner, and they get a little flustered about how hot everyone is.

Comments

Alan Rickman is so damn hot. Other note, Kate Winslet is a beautiful woman, and a beautiful teenager at that time. And yet, it’s amazing when the other woman turns around with her crazy long neck and looks Marianne up and down (and it stabs the audience like she’s doing it to us), when the camera cuts back to Kate, they miraculously make her look plain in comparison; such great film making.

I have always felt a connection to this story, but weirdly I want to use the girl and be a dick to her.... I wonder why....

Reilly Willoughby

My favourite Jane Austen adaptation is the BBC Pride and Prejudice

Shani Gribben

“I like women! I think!” 🤣 I have the same “oh crap!” thoughts whenever I see Florence Pough in anything

Meg W.

My best friend always called me “Marianne” when she teased me about boys 🤣 She has since stopped when I got married, but still. Haha

Meg W.

There are very few actors who are so good that I'm able to forget that they're acting. This movie may have the highest concentration of them of anything I've ever seen. Alan Rickman is always hot in absolutely everything, although I have to admit that when this came out, I was 14 and couldn't appreciate him yet. And this is my only complaint: Marianne is young enough and innocent enough that it makes sense that she wouldn't notice his sexual appeal at first, and I'm not completely convinced in the end that she's not turning to him because he can offer her everything she didn't get from Willoughby. I wanted one more scene, or maybe just one shot, that demonstrated that yes, she has indeed noticed the sexuality. There might be something subtle showing that (now I want to watch again), but after an entire film with her very openly infatuated with someone else, I think it needed to be a little bit more evident. Choosing the good, kind man is sometimes presented as the woman choosing against her libido, but this is a false dichotomy and a terrible message.

Katizaris Leanisillis

Thompson and Wise had so much chemistry whenever they interacted directly that I literally got confused and thought I'd missed a subplot. When Wikipedia finally told me that no, they'd just been falling in love during filming, suddenly everything made perfect sense.

Katizaris Leanisillis

Alan Rickman *IS AND ALWAYS HAS BEEN* hot 👏🏻 as 👏🏻 hell. Welcome to the party, gentleman. Thank all the gods of time that we have film so Alan Rickman is with us forever. 🙏🏻

jeneskew

There’s amazing filmmaking in the transition shots too… the “Sense & Sensibility field” where Marianne visually crosses over into her new self. 🤌🏻

jeneskew

I mean I thought he was even hot as Snape so...

Megan Rizzo

Alan Rickman is DEFINITELY hot, and it's partly the voice but also the inherent decency of him as a human being... anyway, I first fell in love with him back in Truly, Madly, Deeply, but Colonel Brandon is a shining jewel of a man.

Abigail Friedman

This is one of my favorite movies. I must have watched it on repeat a million times on video when I was in college. One thing I always thought was funny is that the love interest to Kate Winslet’s character is actually married to Emma Thompson in real life. Hugh Grant plays Emma Thompson’s love interest in this movie but plays her brother in Love Actually and Alan Rickman plays her husband in that one. I love the links between actors in real life. I feel like we see that a lot in English movies. That’s not even mentioning the links between a lot of them in the Harry Potter movies. 😆

Jeunee

More of this please!!! 😍 Also, it would have been great to hear thoughts on the other couples in the movie. (Nothing makes me laugh harder than Hugh Laurie's reactions to Imelda Staunton 🤣)

Amy Moody

I’ve loved Alan Rickman since “Truly, Madly, Deeply” so I’m glad he’s finally getting his flowers for being an amazing romantic lead!!

Janese Carstens

Thank you gentlemen as always for your wonderful work in addressing mental health and relationships in an accessible way that also combines the fun of loving cinema. Your series with David Dastmalchian was particularly healing and insight for myself as an actor who deals with deep trauma. If I ever make it in my career I will make it a point to meet you to tell you my appreciation. Also have you ever considered checking out the lesser known Cuba Gooding Jr. film "What Love is?" I'd be very curious to hear your thoughts

Jessman

That's exactly the version I was thinking... It's my favorite of all the versions I've seen. You get to see so much more of their relationship develop and really care for one another. Now I wanna watch it again 😂

Woodwind

Okay, but it has to be the 2006 one with Ruth Wilson & Toby Stephens. That one follows the book, those actors are so good, & it makes a lot of interesting directional & editing choices to amp up the gothic.

Julia

I’ve never seen this movie, but now I want to watch it! 😄 What really speaks to me is when guys are being consistent. I was recently in a situation where I was dating a couple guys where one was attractive but inconsistent with communication and rescheduling dates a few times, and the other was not initially my type but much more consistent with communicating, showing up, and intentionally pursuing me. Consistency is very important when dating and being in a relationship with someone! 😊

Sara Woods

Oh! I saw someone recommend Truly, Madly, Deeply once before as the best ghost story ... involving the difficulties when moving past grief? I still haven't seen it, but must make a point to do so!

Melissa

The Ciaran Hinds/Amanda Root "Persuasion" is my absolute favorite of adaptations, only barely beating out the S&S, P&P, and the new Emma. I love it so much, because of the message of second chances and learning from the past.

Amanda B Cook

That's because he read the script and said, "Well that's just awful." Then proceeded to make his own movie on the side 😂.

SaucyJTD

Seriously! Even in Robin Hood, Kevin Costner was the heartthrob pull for Prince of Thieves but Alan was the who stole the entire movie... and our ❤s! 😅

Wendy Darling

Robert and Lucy were so perfectly awful they make a great power couple. John and Fanny add an interesting depth, John is inherently a nice guy. Had he married anyone else the Dashwood ladies would have totes been taken care of. Gosh, I absolutely afore this book and this movie. It was my first introduction to Austen and I am forever grateful to Emma Thompson.

BJ

Thank you for this episode! Sense and Sensibility is my comfort movie, and I've lost count how many times I've watched it. Also, I appreciate how much love Alan Rickman has gotten for his role in the movie. I'm not usually affected by an actor's passing, but for some reason, his really hit me hard, probably because he was such an amazing human and actor. But I will always remember him as Col. Brandon.

Amanda B Cook

The audio commentary was awesome! I miss my DVD specifically for this reason.

BJ

My three big college crushes!

BJ

More Jane Austen please!!! 😁😁😁 I'd also love to see what both think of Jane Eyre... Therapy for Rochester. I know not Austen but still.

Woodwind

I ❤️ Emma Thompson! She's beautiful, so talented, and hilarious!!

Woodwind

I thunk we all would!

Woodwind

Oh Hell Yea! Rickman is so 🔥🔥🔥!!!

Woodwind

I think it was that version of Persuasion that really lead me into Jane Austen. I rented the VHS (yes I'm old 😂) based on the cover and the description. After watching it, I was hooked and wanted more.

Woodwind

It certainly is beautifully shot. I saw it at least a dozen times in the theater... Between the soundtrack, is cinnamontography, and the acting was just superb! It's still one of my favorite adaptations ever!!

Woodwind

I have never seen this movie but now I want to

KrissyArtist

I disagree, I think that they accept each other's influence. He reads to her because she likes to be read to, not only because he likes reading. He puts together a picnic for her and her family even though he's a more reserved guy. She kind of comes down off her girlish cloud and realizes the benefits of being a more mature individual. You're right Brandon is fantastic, but it takes two to tango, and he wouldn't have liked Marianne in the first place if she didn't have qualities to be liked. I don't think he's the type of guy to only like a woman for being pretty. That being said, I am SO HERE for an Austen male leads ranking.

Louisa C. Moyers

The only clip I wish was included was when they're going to have their big picnic at Brandon's ESTATE (I mean come on, he's the whole package) and he gets a letter and leave immediately. Then friggin Willoughby is like "hm what a kill joy oh well me and Marianne are going to go flirt BY OURSELVES." I think it perfectly sums up their characters: Brandon is always willing to the right thing even if it's not convenient for him, and Willoughby just wants to do whatever is the most fun for him even if it's improper or going to be a detriment to someone else. Other than that I love the rankings. I think if more men were like Brandon all of society would benefit.

Louisa C. Moyers

Jonathan, you’re not wrong, but Colonel Brandon + Marianne coming out on top of a list of couples feels a little…unfair. That relationship wins out ENTIRELY due to Colonel Brandon. Marianne had very little to do with it. I think y’all should’ve just gone with rating the males leads—that’s where this ranking makes the most sense (…and sensibility. See what I did there? 😉).

AnnMarie Saunders

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. I have probably seen this about 100,000,000 times in my life. 😆

EmsieHammer

I don't know if someone already commented on this but I loved how on some scenes Alan and Johnatan's faces were edited on top of the clip when they talked about something enthusiastically. That was so fun. Thank you!

Seldanz_

Alan Rickman had such a vast array of acting skill. Even when he played a character you wanted to hate, you couldn't help but feel endeared in some way. No one is judging you here, Jono 😂.

SaucyJTD

you have gotten pretty close to colonel brandon’s hair, alan lol a lot closer than a lot of others don’t sell yourself short dude

Alex Boynton

It's crazy to think the powerhouses that were involved with this project! Of course its such a good rendition, and also very entertaining in an era that had some pretty dry period pieces (in my opinion at least). Such a lovely take on this book really. I mean this was great, don't get me wrong this is hands down my favorite Rickman, but Pride and Prejudice and Zombies was gold to me. Not strictly Austen but such a good adaptation, the film making was beautiful, and had a modern yet still quite regency take on the novel. I'd love to hear Jono and Alan talking about it!

Drea

Your dad!? That's so cool!

Cinema Therapy

Strictly speaking Northanger Abbey (2007) with Felicity Jones is the best screen adaptation of a Jane Austen novel, but this one is very good too and in close competition with Kate Beckinsale Emma (1996).

Julia

My dad helped Emma Thompson with the script, so naturally I approve of calling it the best adaptation, wink. More seriously, I think one of the many things making it so good is that Ang Lee grew up in a culture where manners were still important, so he knew how to present manners as intrinsic rather than intrusive. (And, of course, one of the flaws with Willoughby is that, actually, he is manner-less because, at the core, he lacks respect for others. ) Yes, Alan Rickman is hot, and I adore that, 200 years ago, Austen wrote a character who is both so genuinely respectful of women and 100% manly. (Move over, Aragorn!) If you want another movie in which to fall, hard, for Rickman, watch "Truly, Madly, Deeply." Lastly, that "panic-happy sobbing" Emma Thompson does is literally in the book. Thompson put on the screen exactly what Austen wrote, and it was filmed perfectly. In every aspect, this is a brilliant adaptation. And as always, thanks Jono and Alan for a wonderful episode!

Katharine Kroeber-Wiley

Absolutely yes, the Ciaran Hinds/Amanda Root "Persuasion" is brilliant (and the other versions are awful). This "Sense and Sensibility", that "Persuasion", and the 2020 "Emma" are great adaptations of an author who is very difficult to adapt adequately!

Katharine Kroeber-Wiley

LOL I love this episode so much! Sense & Sensibility is the best Austen interpretation, & the best Rickman role (he does the MOST with the LEAST; it's incredible). P.S. I was the weird little girl who had crushes on Liam Neeson, Alan Rickman, and Colin Firth in the 80s/90s. xD Col. Brandon can 100% get it.

Manic Thiccsy Dream Girl

Thank you for this episode! Am I the only one that thought: wait a minute, this 3 actors meet again in Love Actually, aren't they? They are so good in their skills!!!!

Dorikuu Garcia

Yes, Alan Rickman is hot. May he rest in sexy peace. We lost a great one 8 years back..

Chris Breezy

hugh grant looks like he wants to crawl out of his own skin the entire movie

simdoodles

Brandon is the biggest catch in this movie BAR NONE! Well spotted and bravo for saying so 😍

Anna H

I like women I think welcome to the bi experience

Alice Hoade

Hear, hear! - Jono

Cinema Therapy

Same!!!

Kate Larson

OMG THANK YOU for this!!!!!! 🥳🥳😍*happy penguin dance*

Robin

What a lovely episode! This movie is a gem, but I think my favourite adaptation is a Pride and Prejudice BBC TV series with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle

Olga Makarova

Alan, stick with Sam unless Gimli asks for a lock of your hair.

Darcie Daniels

Yes, Amanda Root. The perfect Anne, imho.

Eve72

OH absolutely. Was the actress’ name Amanda Root? That one would be perfect. ❤️

Darcie Daniels

Absolutely Alan Rickman is hot! Great job guys, and while I agree this is a terrific Austen adaptation, I still think 2005's Pride and Prejudice with Kiera Knightly and Matthew MacFaddyn is the best Austen film adaptation.

Arielle Bejar

P.s to this. How I describe my Romantic History because of this of this film. I have had plenty of interactions with a Willoughby' throughout the years , it's time for my Colonel Brandon. Anyway, It makes me smile that you chose this Sense and Sensibility! Thank you!!!

Laura E

Lol Jono "I love one-shots" *me a fanfic writer and DnD nerd: Me too! 😄

Dylan Mancy

Yes, Rickman *is* hot as hell! Now you need to compete the Austen trifecta by watching the 1995 version of "Persuasion" with Ciaran Hinds (other versions range from meh to awful: avoid those). "Persuasion" was Austen's last completed work and her most mature one. Would make a great episode on "Learning from the mistakes of the past," which is (spoiler!) what the hero and heroine have to do.

Eve72

This is my favorite film rendition of Sense and Sensibility!!! I also miss Alan Rickman so much! This is what I remember him most from and few other films, long before the HP Universe.

Laura E

About to watch the review, but even before I do, Marianne and Brandon. Brandon knows how to respect Marianne, and I know at first for him it's infatuation since he can't get to know her well because of that damn Willoughby, but past actions weigh a lot with me. And Alan Rickman plays him so well, it breaks my heart.

Melissa

I love Jane Austen, the Romance genius.

Hedda Bakken Olerud

BTW I agree that Alan Rickman is super 🔥 in this movie.

Kate Ackerley

I'd pay to listen to Alan Rickman read a phone book. RIP, sir.

Wendy Darling

This is my favorite Jane Austen book and I love this movie! Emma Thompson is a genious! I mean all actors are great in this movie however she wrote the screenplay for this. If you have time, watch the movie with the audio commentary on. I ❤ her. Thank you for starting my week on a great note!!

Kate Ackerley

Love this movie! Watched it first year's ago because, yes!!! Alan Rickman is hot!!!!

Wiwik Anggraini

Highly recommend the film!

Cinema Therapy

Omg yes!!! What a surprise to see this one! And don’t worry Jono, I think everyone finds Alan Rickman at least a little bit attractive 😏 He really does have a whole range of roles and I *absolutely* recommend everyone check out his lesser-known stuff. He’ll always be my favorite actor. We all miss him.

Emily Snell-Salvaggio

I literally just finished a reread of sense and sensibility yesterday! This couldn’t have come out at a more perfect time!

Smkaial

Jono coming through with the Emma Thompson stan fact about her husband before the first clip has even begun is such a vibe 😂❤️ I had just been thinking: if they don’t mention that Willoughby is her hubby, I shall swallow my own bonnet!

Nicole Colombatto

I've never actually seen this film! Excited to watch this episode 😁 (PS. I can't listen to either of you say "charming" (or haunting for that matter) without also saying "chaunting" in my head 😂)

Kambria

Oh my gosh I love this movie!! *slams play*
