It could also be interesting because if you go with the couple having been together a long time and now the husband is gone, both the mother and the daughter may have to “discover” who the mom is without the husband. Not that she’d be hugely different. But I cannot fathom that your identity continues to feel entirely the same.

I like Ashes to Ashes. You’d just have to be aware of the heat index of where you go to film in the middle of the summer. Do the parent and child have to have a broken or never formed relationship or could it just be that both characters have been so busy and emotionally drained and wrapped up with caregiving, coping with the losses and the pandemic stress that they’ve literally had no time to connect? Make the adult child a teacher or professor who gave a shit during the pandemic…we weren’t like medial workers risking our lives before vaccines, but the time required to keep education going was all-consuming and would be completely logical as to another reason that the child and parent haven’t really been connecting even after their caretaking was over. There were also a lot of funny and wild things that happened while teaching unprepared students online. Plus, we all relate to the feeling of having no time to “tend to” our relationships. Some people have actual falling outs, but more often it’s more of a fade. Could make people think more about how they’re choosing to spending their time. Or sometimes we don’t want to burden our loved ones further with our own emotions or forget that shared grief or even just sharing of our memories can be cathartic and healing. I’m not sure if any of that jives with the plot. Maybe it’s not enough without a broken relationship. I just wanted to propose the idea that I might not entirely need to be.

By order of preference : 1. Unrealized sounds like the film I never knew I wanted, but can't stop thinking about now that you have pitched it. 2.MeetU, because it's a perfect mix of Cyrano/black mirror meets rom com as you said. Tbf it even reminds me of ADHD given the noise and voices in ND brains. It sort of responds to usual mechanisms of overthinking and stress and all the problems with dating. 3.ADHD the movie, because it resonates with me on a personal level. However I'm concerned about one thing: for many reasons the female experience is different with ADHD is different from the male perspective. The everyday experience per se, the late diagnosis, the impact of patriarchy in all of that... So basically using just one character to represent it would be limiting, even if of course it could never be exhaustive and that's not what it should try to aim for either. 4.Ashes to ashes I find really interesting, it reminds me a tiny bit of Riceboy Sleeps but with other aspects that sound great. It's the kind of film I'd love to see at the cinema. I also have a question : with such a limited budget, how free are you really to "go with the flow" while filming (scouting locations right before shooting, sort of impulsive creative ideas during filming, ad lib from the actors etc...)?

I'd really like to narrow it down to one: Unrealized. Forced to pick two others, I'd say: ADHD and MeetU. But I want to see Unrealized so badly right now. That sounds awesome.

John Sherwood

MeetU/Unrealized, Ashes to ashes. I'd maybe flashback the roadtrip from the pier? Maybe you could combine the adhd and ai one with one of the people in the couple? Also could be funny with some moments where the ai gives confused feedback because e.g. someone's mom searches something on their phone or they get stuck in traffic near a place and it looks like they visited. Unrealized intro lolz; the reverse karate kid aspect is also fun.

Kimberly

I like the ADHD one especially if the leads are female. As a 40-something woman who is just getting a diagnosis, it would be a neat idea to have someone just finding out and finally realizing so much about her life...😉

Laura

1. ADHD: The Movie 2. Meet You- dating app 3. Unrealized

I love how each of the stories has deep thought provoking undercurrents as well as plots. I agree that with recent events in Jono’s life it may be too soon for the farther/son idea. However, I don’t necessarily think it has to be a parent/child story. Theaters are filled with diverse people. Maybe have two (or more) strangers connect over a series of films only to discover they are on different sides of whatever issue. Maybe a binary person & a homophonic person. Both struggle to come to grips with who the other person is, who they thought they were & how they respond to the other person. As the film’s were pitched my top 3 are: 1 - Unrealized 2 - ADHD: The Movie 3 - Ashes to Ashes

Tracy Snow

Sorry I’m late as always lol. 1. Unrealized Jono’s catchphrase “I’m on a mission from a God!! Not sure which one yet but it’s all the same” I super glad my idea reminded you of this because it sounds hilarious and I love sitcoms 2.ashes to ashes Sounds deep and funny 3. AI dating app Cyran0 could be a good name or call it AI but the I on the poster has a line on bottom making look like and L and call in Artificial Love. As an aro/ace I love a cheesy romcom

Love all this feedback. Thank you! Lots of good things to chew on and look into.

For 3, a great concept with a clear progression. I would suggest for you to purchase The Emotional Wound Thesaurus by Angela Ackerman and Becca Puglissi, it will you great launching point to find issues for mom and son to work through. For Meet You, excellent idea with inherent tension. I would suggest looking up the beat sheet for omances and playing with each beat for your plot. And 5, I have no comments on this! It's excellent, has a complex character with a specific goal to achieve. For all the ideas, I will remind you to work in tertiary relationships to liven what happens. I know from personal experience that only focusing on two characters makes the conflict go stale. Secondary characters bring the spice for stories.

Ayesha Ali

For ideas 1 and 2, I feel they're lacking a coherent plot. If you want to film these, you'll need a specific issue to work through (for 1) and a specific project/deadline (for 2). Also, idea 1 will need to rely heavily on symbols and thematic images to show the relationship arc (i.e. start with rejecting hug to accepting hug). So, for me, these two aren't developed enough yet.

Ayesha Ali

Okay, I'm going to give my serious storyteller personal opinion.

Ayesha Ali

The online gender stuff is definitely fascinating when it comes to screen names and profile photos. In emails and on Reddit everyone assumes I’m a man too. On a separate note, I was really glad they chose your idea to pitch because it’s really beautiful and fun. You can’t see my comment on the video but I said it was giving Big Lebowski coffee can vibes towards the end (which is a huge compliment in my weird way of being).

Jimmy Danielle

*on the spectrum with low support needs. I was thinking someone like Kaitlyn from Love on the Spectrum. (For those who don’t know she participated in things like speed dating and wasn’t asked back because they felt that she wasn’t “autistic enough” despite being a fan favorite)

Jimmy Danielle

For MeetU, it would also be cool if one of the partners is using the app because they are on the spectrum and feel like they need help communicating with non-ND people but they actually like each other in their natural states because their natural personalities work well together. That would add the dark layer of it being predatory towards people who are vulnerable, while being positive representation of the ND experience, the normalcy of dating people with disabilities, and how insecurity is something we all share. Sorry for the multiple long posts, I am rewatching the video now and I’m noticing different thoughts with some processing time. This should be the last one lol.

Jimmy Danielle

I would never in a million years ask another writer, or artist for that matter, to create anything but what they feel needs to be created or how. We all create from our own psychology. But, I do think it’s hilarious the number of times I’ve been misconstrued as a man online.

TrashPandaKitty

OH NO!!! I didn't realize! Uh... It doesn't have to be a guy! But I thought thematically it was kinda fun (and mirrored my own life) to have an adult man dealing with his mom. We'll chat. (especially if it gets picked! IT'S SUCH A GOOD STORY!!!!)

Alan Seawright

These are all awesome. I’d be happy to vote for any of them. My only issue is I’m a woman, I sent in Ashes to Ashes. Does it have to be a guy lol?

TrashPandaKitty

Thanks team for the great meeting today! A couple of thoughts on the ADHD Movie if it is a finalist. Since the person is successful, they are likely twice-exceptional (2e) and there’s a lot of great resources on the strengths/struggles associated with that population and how it manifests. Also, is there any chance the main character could be female or non-binary? There’s a lot more representation of men as the main characters in office dramas as well as in the “successful neurodivergent” space. Without centering gender, it would be nice to see a someone else experiencing those spaces and normalizing them. Finally, I mentioned it in the chat, but it would be cool to see the MC make a very quick/easy friendship with an ASD-coded person since supportive/accepting ND friendships are common in real life. That would support the normalization of the person’s way of existing, rather than showing them as struggling across the board or reflecting the “quirky, socially awkward male genius trope” since there’s a lot of pushback on those right now. I can’t wait to see what everyone picks, because I feel like all of the ideas were amazing!

Jimmy Danielle

My Top Picks 1. ADHD the Movie 2. Ashes to Ashes 3. Unrealized
