DIRECTOR'S CUT: How Close is Too Close? Ed & Shaun in SHAUN OF THE DEAD
Added 2024-04-15 14:57:08 +0000 UTC
How do you stand up for yourself and set boundaries?
Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright are doing a movie couple (friendship) therapy on Shaun and Ed from Shaun of the Dead. They’re taking a look at healthy and unhealthy boundaries in relationships. Jonathan talks about what happens when you’re afraid to set boundaries or when they're broken and what to do about it. Alan talks about the power of the edit in movies and how Shaun of the Dead puts on a masterclass. Same goes for the impeccable writing and storytelling through jokes!
Check out Jono's personal YouTube channel! He has a bunch on there!

Anyone notice the little 'winky' messages with the coffee mugs when Sean is detailing his plan? The first one says, "I'm a genius" and the second time it says, "Cool, Cool."
It's just those little tiny joke touches that ... man... Edgar Wright is such a genius!!

So, you guys do know that you have to review the whole “Conello Trilogy” now right? 😌 Especially “The World’s End”, I’d really like to hear you guys take on the arrested development and entitlement Simon Pegg’s character portrays.

I can't handle gore very well, so I haven't been able to watch this movie start to finish, but I do love every scene I have been able to watch. :)

This movie was absolutely class , the pub scene in this in my opinion is typical literally typical UK 🇬🇧 pub scene , welcome to Britain 😆 Simon Pegg definitely underrated as an actor and love Nick Frost , heartbreaking when Shaun’s mum got bit and she hid it from him and had to make the hardest decision ever 🥺 and beating the landlord with snooker cues in timing with the Queen song “ Don’t Stop Me Now “ was absolutely class 👌🤣☮️💚 when he does leave Ed behind after Ed admitted holding him back and that he should make a go of his relationship, he showed he was a true friend after all 🥹

What timing, Ian Danskin over at Innuendo Studios also just released a video about the Cornetto trilogy, but argued the opposite on how Shaun actually didn't grow: https://www.patreon.com/posts/early-access-but-100731612 (public YouTube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfSfcJUUJII)
I love this film too, in part because it's so dense that there are so many different interpretations of it. Great video as always!

"You'll have it on the day" is the reason we have Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn instead of Stuart Townsend. Great segment!

Yes!!!! I mean the ridiculousness of how even today hetero men doing the most hetero thing they can do… literally LOVING A WOMAN… get called “gay.” It’s bad form but mostly it’s just STUPID. 😂

I was forced to watch this movie despite a SEVERE zombie phobia (because "it's funny not scary!" which IS NOT HOW PHOBIAS WORK, BIG BRO), so even though I will not be watching this particular episode, I can imagine some of what would be discussed. I thought their friendship was straight-up shitty in the beginning, but I remember somewhat coming around by the end. Now whether that was due to actual boundaries or just really good movie making, I'll leave that to the pros. Happy watching to all who can!

I need to know how many takes that outro had or if you did one line readoffs.
I think it is also worth noting that for a good generation or two in the UK, where a lot of this was set, 'gay' was in active use for conversations. Even if people have moved past it because of awareness, acceptance and everything else, it was used as a descriptor, same for quite a few of the words like the C word that now have to be filtered or otherwise.
I think theres an aspect of british speech from that time which has been missed by larger global audiences especially now decades later.

Please do The World’s End! Such a fun film with performances from several of my all-time favorite actors. Simon and Nick’s character relationship is so different (sort of reversed) from Shaun of the Dead, and the growth is equally as compelling!

There's something like a cargo cult that's grown up along the shores of the sea of "political correctness culture", aka "making an effort to care about other people". Where people adopt signifiers and customs without any understanding where they come from or what they mean. Ed isn't bad because he calls Shaun gay, he's bad because he thinks that having feelings - being in love with a woman especially - is unmanly behavior and being unmanly is immoral. I'd say if people miss that point and only object to his using the bad words, missing the point that you're supposed to dislike the character is the least of their worries.

I know I have said this before but seriously you guys and others helped me out of a bad situation. I was in a rough relationship where I wasn’t me and my goals were only my partners and it wasn’t until Jono said, “The ability to take influence” and this set the ball rolling. I realized how much I had adapted and morphed to my partners need and when I ask for change it was meet with “why are you with me then?” Luckily, I was able to convince her to leave for a long study abroad trip, I dropped her at the airport and said my goodbyes and realized. I was absolutely addicted to her. Topically which Jono brought up as enmeshed relation. I had become so dependent from her critiques, I started developing imposter syndrome, to the point I had no confidence that I could survive without her. But once I got that well needed space I soon realized how much control I had in my life, and when we would call how much she would try to rangle the conversation to the point of saying “this was a normal conversation” like I had to follow a criteria. So right then in there I said I had enough.
Moral of the story I was able to get space and realized who I was, what goals I had, and ambition going into the world. I was with someone so controlling I lost my way. Once I had that space I was able to just break free.
But it’s all because you guys really started that very small snowball that just kept piling up, I still went to therapy, used my support groups, say others opinions. And consumed your content like crazy for relationship stuff, just to make sure I wasn’t crazy.
Thank you Alan and Jono, if I could I would hug or maybe just give a crisp high five. I can easily say you are changing lives and making the world an amazing place😊

I would say absolutely you will. If this video performs well on YouTube you'll get it sooner. If not then I'll use my "gimme" episodes to make it happen next year. I'm referring to, once or twice a year, Alan and I each have an episode that we get to make just because we want to make it, even though it's probably not going to perform well. Mine this year was Indiana Jones, for example. Last year was Rocky. - Jono

Awesome! This was so great. The Cornetto Trilogy are a few of my favorite movies to revisit. I personally would love to see what you guys would bring up in The World's End, not just because of the themes of arrested development and struggling with self-worth when you hit those times of struggle in life but also the impact those struggles have on relationships. Not to mention the fact that it was probably the most ambitious film of the three that Edgar Wright pulled off while making it funny and fun.

Did the makeup team deliberately make Pegg look less attractive in the earlier scenes than later ones, or is that pure acting? He looks ten to fifteen years younger once he starts finding himself.

This used to be my favorite movie. I'd watching it at least once a month (at peak weekly) no one understood why I loved it so much, but it was hysterical AND let me feel my feelings. Also, I will add before getting a comment, I'm neurodivergent, so it was my comfort movie for a time. I'm definitely rewatching it tonight

Jono in red! I know it's not the first time, but it's fun to see 🙂.
Simon Pegg is a horribly underrated actor, and this is one of the best movies he's ever been in. The entire car scene where Philip turns into a zombie was done so brilliantly. The stupid arguments, leading into an unexpected emotional scene between a dying step-father to his son, to Ed just running a zombie over while failing to pull over, then the immediate abrupt change of Phillip being a zombie which completely robbed Shaun of this big emotional moment that he's been needing his whole life... brilliant writing, acting, and filming.
You guys nailed this episode, and held up to your love of accountability by calling both Shaun and Ed out for their strong yet unhealthy friendship. Thanks so much for all the continuing content!
