DIRECTOR'S CUT: Movie Family Therapy: A GOOFY MOVIE

How do you reconcile damaged relationships between parents and children?
Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright are taking a look at the father-son relationship between Goofy and Max in A Goofy Movie. They’re talking about how children naturally distance themselves from their parents as they age and how parents can stay connected while giving them space. Jonathan explains why parents push their kids, and both him and Alan share the weird roadside attractions they’ve subjected their children to.
Is there a movie that deals with estrangement that you can react to?

Is it just me or is Roxanne impossibly beautiful 😍. It makes me sad that there's no way that I'll ever find someone like that... 😔

I saw this movie once, but I barely remeber it. My father got this movie and Toy Story 1 from a blockbuster when I was sick as a kid to watch. He asked me witch one I liked more and I choose Toy Story, so he bought that one for me to keep

I LOVE that you kept in the shot towards the beginning Goofy’s “Goodbye pile of broken wood.” That’s my favorite line in this movie. I will randomly get that line in my head and then have to watch the whole movie again. Great episode. Thanks guys!

OMG I loved Harry & The Henderson growing up! It and Short Circuit were my go-to movies for live action. (For animated movies, I jumped between All Dogs Go To Heaven & Disney’s Robin Hood.)

So sense some people may not know way back when goofy didn’t really look goofy he actually had a wife and basically the back story is that his wife had passed away and that he is a single father and that’s when goofy troop series started

I kind of wish you guys would have gone into "The Perfect Cast" at the end. It's such a great moment. We, along with Goofy, realize that Max was always paying attention and listening after Max does the perfect cast. And the look on his face once he's been saved isn't "oh thank god I'm alive!" but "I'm so proud of my son. And now I know that he really does listen to me, even when we're not getting along."

The most traumatic day of my life was when I was alone in a room reading and laughed out loud only to hear my father's laugh.

I freaking love Goofy Movie. It’s the only time I think we ever see Goofy being an ACTUAL CHARACTER not just a silly little guy who makes us laugh.
He’s a single dad with a teenage son. He’s working at a mall to keep things afloat….its hard word. Also, this movie, especially the “on the open road” song, has such a special meaning to me. My best friend Ryan and I would sing that song ever time we went on road trips together. I’d sing Max and he’d sing Goofy. Ryan passed away from kidney failure almost 5 years ago. I miss him a lot 💔

Fun fact, when Goofy says "I was never invited to a party, and look at me now!" his pants originally fell down. But Disney went back and censored the movie, and removed a few things for the blue ray release and Disney+.

Loved this movie growing up, love it now! You’ve covered two of my childhood movies in a short span! Thank you!!
Also not the “Goofy on Trial” clip 🤣 I died. (If you haven’t seen it, don’t look it up. At least with youngin’s around. )

Hey now, Alan, as a native Texan who has has moved 20+ times in the last ten years across multiple states and continents (and the thousands of hours of driving that accompany that), what bone could you possibly have to pick with Buccees? 😝 There is a reason we are more than willing to add a hundred miles to our trip to have guaranteed clean, spacious bathrooms, enough food/drink variety to please *everyone* on the trip, and nicknacks to browse so that you can actually stretch your legs while you’re stopped. 😂
It is funny, though, because every non-Texan I’ve ever met also questions our “obsession” with Buccees until they finally get to stop at one while on one of your average, obnoxiously long drives through the damn state, and then every time it’s “Ohhhhhhh, I get it now.” 😂 Plus, they’ve been strong advocates of paying their employees actual living wages for years. I remember stopping at them in high school for school trips in the early 2000s and they were already advertising $15-18/hour positions, so it’s also nice to be able to support a business that actually tries to take care of their people. 💕

I’d like to point out that in the sequel (An Extremely Goofy Movie, which you should totally do an episode on), Roxanne doesn’t even exist anymore, so clearly there was a breakup there somewhere. She’s a bit of a daddy’s girl, and apparently in some side content has a weird thing for Goofy so my bets are on Max being the one doing the dumping.

Best musical of all time. One of my favorite films and just a great time all around. One of the few movies I can recall where the primary antagonist isn't a villian. This is Max's story and I think One of Disney's best. Every song from beginning to end is amazing and this movie is proof that animation is the best format for musicals.

I'm okay, my Mom is HOH and it's kind of just become a habit to have them on and check when I misheard things. So it just made me laugh. 🤣 My other favorite is at least once per episode you guys start laughing and the screen fills with "hahaha hahaha" as the captions take over. It's honestly entertaining seeing what they will do next.

Love this movie! Definitely one of the greats from childhood that I love to revisit. Not to get stuck on a theme here, but I would be curious to see what your take would be on an Extremely Goofy Movie, because of the struggle Goofy has reconciling his helicopter parenting and his identity as a person (before parenthood) while being with Max in college. I think parenthood and the status of being a parent becomes the only identifier for a lot of people to the point that whoever they were before that gets lost. I just find that super interesting.

I live near Eddie World, and yeah this is honestly the worst part of the dessert XD Yermo and Barstow are not where I want to be, but I do love Eddie's World, and Editor, I agree, they need branded merch! I would honestly buy a sticker collection from them, but I digress. Love this movie and feel so old saying this, but I definitely still have my VHS copy in my garage and I think I wore it down with how many times I watched it as a kid.

Some classic episodes from old Disney shorts give clues about Max’s mom and what happened to her….SPOILER: she was having an affair with the milkman (there is an episode of them switching places), and she passed away, which are some of the reasons why he is a single father.

I love this movie and this take on it - thank you! A quick note about the color of the water: you're from Utah right? Our rivers are in spring runoff right now and they have that EXACT color. Go take a peak at the Jordan river right now! Since they left right after summer break started, the river could just be in run off!

According to that map the family name is GooFey, which is kinda funky. I assumed Goofy was a nickname off of his last name, and we just don't know his first name because the nickname is just the baseline.
ETA: The editor's contribution about Eddie's makes me strangely proud to be an Idahoan. 🥒

I saw this movie in the theater with my mom, my younger brothers and my best friend when I was 16. (My Mom had to drag my friend and I to see it. It became our favorite movie of that summer. We sang all the songs all the time.) As a teen, I related to Max, not wanting to be seen as a kid anymore and have my own life.
As a parent of teens now, I can relate to Goofy.
My own daughter is 15 and as she started finding her own path separate from me, it was so hard at first. I did my best to remain patient, loving, firm and continue to be supportive of her while still maintaining healthy boundaries. I still miss that little girl and the way things were before but I’m happy that we are still close. While it’s normal for teens to need to discover who they are separate from their parents, it’s normal for us parents to want to hold on to our kids being little. This movie shows both sides of this so well. 💞
