Alan & Jono's Watching/Reading List: April 2024

Alan:

Hello Heroes!

April! The sun hid for three minutes and forty-three seconds. It was awe-inspiring and life-changing. Seriously. I’d head that my whole life until 7 years ago when I saw my first totality. Now I’m going to chase them for the rest of my life. Feels like seeing the face of God.

What I’m reading!

What I’m watching!

What I’m playing!

Watch Movies! (And television, and read books, and play video games)

Jono:

Hi all! How's April been treating you? I've been enjoying the final set of episodes of Star Wars: The Bad Batch, getting my Gilmore Girls on, and was absolutely blown away by Civil War (caught it with Alan). I also caught a double-feature of Star Trek: First Contact and Speed at the local revival theater, and that may be the best double-bill I've ever watched.

I've been reading Secure Love by Julie Menanno, LMFT, all about attachment theory and building secure attachments. I'm on a classic novel kick as well, so I've been enjoying Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift.

What have you been watching and reading this month?

Comments

Rereading my own book The Merman's Mark and catching up on the latest frames of the Punderworld comic by Linda Sejic.

Kimberly

I am only on season 2 but I learned a lot in the episode about WW1. I didn’t know that was when depth charges were first used. It is all so interesting 😁 I am loving it!

Drug Princess

Omg I looove Drain the Ocean! My favorite so far Titanic, New York, Coast of Carolinas, the Last Slave Ship, Spanish Armada, and Rise of the Roman Empire

Lynettra

I watched Immaculate (I think it was the only movie I watched last month). The acting was great, and the tension was real. I read Wicked as well, and it confused me. And Uzumaki. That was great!

Beutimus

I binge watched Bosch in about a week and I started watching Baby Reindeer, but had to take a break cause it was so extreme. Started the second season of Will Trent which has a really cute dog in it. Watched Carrie for the first time and tonight my flatmate and I are going to a screening of 9 to 5. Been listening to The Tortured Poets Department a lot. Didn't get through as much because I was in Vietnam for the first half of the month

Shani Gribben

I love that show!

Shani Gribben

Buried in school work (learning Icelandic is *hard*!) and a writer's retreat, so my main break has been watching Bad Batch (where is Tech? Let him out of the narrative tupperware!!) and talking about it over Zoom with my kids.

Katharine Kroeber-Wiley

Oh, and I watched a new adaption of ”Ronja Rövardotter” (Ronja Robbersdaughter) om Netflix as well! It’s based on a super popular childrens book here in Sweden (written by Astrid Lindgren, same author as Pippi Longstocking), and since it was masterfully adapted to TV in the ’80:s I was a bit on the fence, but I really enjoyed it. Very nostalgic whilst still bringing something new. It’s probably only available on swedish Netflix though.

Sara Wagiström

I’ve been almost completely occupied with the tortured poets department, but I did watch ”Resident Alien” on Netflix as well. Basically only started watching because it stars Alan Tudyk but I ended up loving it! It’s a really fun concept - an alien trying to pass as human in a small town.

Sara Wagiström

Ooh, that sounds really cool!

First Contact! <3

Erin McCullough

Oh, and I binge watched 9-1-1. Great series!

Lyndis Cealin

Haven't been watching much because I read 18(!?) books in April. HIGHLY recommend Into the Real by John Ringo and the series Out of the Dark by David Weber. Currently reading To Sleep In a Sea of Stars by Christopher Paolini and Jesus Outside the Lines by Scott Sauls (which is incredible and incredibly challenging!). I am watching The Chosen TV series with my husband though and WOW. 👌🏻

Lydia Hartzler

I read 'The Sunshine Court' by Nora Sakavic. A Sequel with a new main character of my favourite book series 'All for the Game'. Can recommend all books of the series if you like overdramatic dark stories, sports animes, queer rep (gay and demi in the first three books; a lot more in TSC) and very complex and difficult characters. A lot of people don't think the trauma rep is realistic or accurate but my experience with survivors of any kind says otherwise. (there are triggerwarning lists online, if you have triggers you should seek those out first (they contain spoilers, though))

I'm so excited for the next SA book! Sanderson has yet to disappoint me, even if his characters have 🤣.

SaucyJTD

I’ve been re-reading the Stormlight Archive books in preparation for the 5th book this fall. They have once again consumed my life, so I haven’t had time to watch anything lately. I want to catch up on Monarchs though and watch new movies like Civil War! Hopefully next month.

Carissa Cunningham

Lately I’ve been off on my reading because I’m easily distracted. As for movies, I saw the Spy x Family Code White movie with my parents because they love the show, Boy Kills World was in a mystery showing last week and it was a blast, then I watched the Knuckles show and had some fun with that and then Ready or Not for a podcast I guested on with a friend. With moving to a new place getting settled in I haven’t had much time for games but when I have it’s been Helldivers 2. Democracy won’t spread itself.

Andrew Feistner

Reading: The Zodiac Academy books. It's my new adult Twilight books with whiffs of Harry Potter rip offs, and I'm hooked. Yes, the writing is horribly repetitive and cliche (everyone growls... grr argh). Yes, all the romance is problematic. And yes, a lot of the plot could be avoided if people would just go to therapy. But I'm already on book 5 as of this morning, and I'll probably keep binge reading until I finish the series. Should probably cleanse my reading pallette with something healthy next, but I'll keep enjoying Lance Orion for now 😅. Watching: A majority of my time has been spent catching up on Cinema Therapy and Mended Light episodes. I did see the Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare in theaters for my birthday weekend, though. As someone who is a sucker for the, "I need a team" trope, I loved the hell out of it. I also watched CTU: Provo the same weekend, and laughed at the plot with the hippies. My birthday is Earth Day, so it ended up being even funnier to me that I watched it around then, too.

SaucyJTD

I haven’t been able to do much reading due to being busy, but I’ve been picking away at David Brin’s Startide Rising a chapter at a time. Started watching Resident Alien on Netflix.

IndyDraws

I have been watching’Drain the Oceans’ on Disney+. They use all the 3D mapping technology and give us a detailed look of ship wrecks on the oceans floor and learn about the history and how that ship got there. I love history it has been very interesting to me.

Drug Princess

Reading: Haven’t been reading much lately due to being busy with work (and sleeping after work). But I am finally making my way through Why Am I So Anxious by Dr. Tracey Marks. It’s dense, so taking my time. Watching: NHL playoffs!! And I need to finish watching Shogun.

Lynettra

I’ve just been reading the Bible but I am planning on rewatching Secondhand Lions, love that film.

Bryan Bowes

Alan: If you like zombie fiction & have never read it, check out Hugh Howie’s “I, Zombie.” It’s somehow both gross and poignant, vignettes told from the zombies’ points of view.
