DIRECTOR'S CUT: Therapist Reacts to WRECK-IT RALPH

How can your perceived weaknesses be turned into strengths? Do you relate to being labeled as the bad guy?

Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright are reacting to Wreck-It Ralph and breaking down Ralph’s role as the bad guy. They talk about Ralph not wanting to be a villain and learning to use his gifts for good. They discuss the deeper meaning of being perceived as bad, the roles society assigns us, and how it’s all one big metaphor for life. Alan shares his appreciation for the script (the bad guy affirmation!), the comedy genius of Sarah Silverman, and how a cartoon bad guy can make him cry.

Thank you to our Patrons for picking this movie!

@14:04 I'm sorry, did Jono just mention Kingdom Hearts?? One of my favorite media series of all time?? I didn't think y'all could get any cooler, but here you are 😂

The bit where Ralph breaks Penelope's car has to be the scariest scene of any Disney movie. I don't know how they ever allowed it. Like, if you have been a child and had a grown-up friend show you that you can't fight them (like by hanging you up in a tree) and take away something you care about for reasons that they think are clever and responsible but you know are wrong but they can't be bothered to listen to you, you don't need the animation and voice performances and stuff to make it unforgettable.

Just starting to watch, but wanted to let you know that there IS a Wreck-It Ralph arcade game!! Press Start in Rapid City, SD, has it downstairs in their retro dungeon right near a LOT of the other classics! ❤️

Fantastic my friends. It is so important to note only be yourself, but to find your tribe who accepts you the easy you are. Bravo and thank you.

Terpsichore

This was a sweet episode.

I love this movie franchise so much! The second film helped me get through some unhealthy friend dynamics and trusting that things will work out the way theyre meant to. Love the message that what some may perceive as faults can actually be a superpower.

I literally had to become a patreon subscriber just to watch this in full (and ofc after wanting to for so long). This movie is my absolute favorite and I am so beyond thrilled that you covered this ... and what's more even touched on Calhoun a bit (gotta admit she is most definitely my favorite). Much love for all you both do 💜

Quinn Anne ASMR

Could not help myself but crying every time when it comes to 'there is no one I rather be than me' part. A great affirmation, indeed! Thank you for the episode ❤️

Victoria Petryk

Love this movie! Another really, really good Episode! Thank you! What I also find really interesting about the Wedding scene is the fact that those cybugs become what they eat. So the cybug that ate calhoun's (no idea if that's correct spelling 😅) fiancé turns into HIM! So she has to actually kill HIM 🥲 pretty messed up, when you think about it. And I only just realized that after a few Times watching 🫠😅

I also don't mind Jar Jar...

Sadie

Watched this movie maybe a dozen times and every time the scene where Ralph smashes the car and falls into the volcano always makes me tear up. One of my favorite movies for sure

Oscar Cervantes

Super unpopular opinion but I have always loved jar jar 😂 I delight in the chaos that they bring and I think they bring a lighthearted feel to the movies that I love

FUN FACTS! Despite being in the Bad-Anon group, Zangief is actually and canonically NOT a bad guy at all. In fact, in the Street Fighter games, he’s actually a good-hearted gentle giant who’s actually a pro-wrestler and wants to be a hero to the kids and fights for his motherland of Russia under the moniker of “The Red Cyclone”. The only reason why Zangief is a bad guy in this is because the producer (or was it director?) lost to Zangief so much in SF2 that he made him as such Other cameos in the Bad-Anon meeting outside of the Pac-Man Ghost, Eggman, Bowser, and M Bison include Kano & Noob Saibot (Black Ninja) from Mortal Kombat and the Zombie from House of the Dead (The zombie with the hatches that gets his heart ripped out). The others kinda escape me though Bison’s line about “Going Turbo” is doubly hilarious coming from him because Street Fighter 2 ended up going through so many versions and variations one of them actually going by “Street Fighter 2 Turbo”. When Street Fighter 2 became Super Street Fighter 2, they also had many versions, one of them being Turbo with “Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo”, one of the most popular versions up until Hyper, HD Remix, and Ultra came out many years later

The green Beholder, who ostensibly has no thighs, right across from him: "Am I a joke to you?" 🤭

John C. Reilly is so underappreciated but this, and his turn in Chicago, were just STELLAR. Evidently he offered up about fifteen different versions of "Mr. Cellophane" and they were all uniquely good. Also, with all the cube-y bits, Fix It Felix's apartment party totally looks like Minecraft with RTX on. 😚

Basically, Ralph is a 'bad ass good guy'...

Love, love, LOVE this movie and I love that it made it into an episode. Thanks, friends.

I love Bowser’s little “the man’s got a point” nod when Zangief is asking who would crush man’s skull like sparrow’s egg if he wasn’t the bad guy.
