EXCLUSIVE EPISODE: TV "Brouple" Therapy: Roy Kent and Jamie Tartt from Ted Lasso

How do you be vulnerable with someone you don't get along with? What do you do to show accountability?

In this Patreon-exclusive episode, licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright are taking a look at a TV couple bromance (brouple, apparently) in Roy Kent and Jamie Tartt from Ted Lasso. Their enemies to lovers bromances pits Roy, an aging football star, against Jamie, a young hotshot, and they butt heads... a lot. Jonathan talks about their journey of accountability and forgiveness and why accountability is so attractive. Alan acknowledges the superb writers on the show, especially Brett Goldstein, who plays Roy. And Alan wonders how every one of Roy's F-bomb are perfectly written without overdoing it.

EXCLUSIVE EPISODE: TV "Brouple" Therapy: Roy Kent and Jamie Tartt from Ted Lasso

Comments

Rewatching this a year later...please please please do an episode where you invite a female therapist and a female filmmaker and they talk about the womance between Rebecca and Keelie!! There are SO FEW good friendships between women depicted on-screen; I would LOVE to see y'all talk about that one. 🧡

AnnMarie Saunders

Seconding the request for basically anything the covers Rebecca's story, and also the request re Keeley's relationships. The obvious way to do both would be to cover Rebecca and Keeley's story arc, which along with this one of Roy and Jamie is one for the ages, I'd say.

John Tate

I was coming here to see if anyone mentioned the Irish/Scottish Jamie impressions😂

Luke

Please do an episode about Rebecca and her story arc throughout the series? Please? It would be such a great one.

John Haslach

Love this! I actually found Ted Lasso because of Cinema Therapy. It has become one of favorite shows to watch over and over again. Any chance of getting a Couple's Therapy episode with Keely and all of her love interests? I think her relationships show a lot of growth for all involved. Great work and thanks for what you do, it's awesome.

Arielle Bejar

Love this episode, and love Ted Lasso. I was so sad when it ended. I need more!

Kristen Young

Glad you enjoyed it, even the impressions! 😁

Cinema Therapy

I’ve watched this probably 3 times now and I still wish it was longer 😂 Your insights are so great and impressions of Roy and Jamie are even better

Shalah Kay

You're so welcome!

I joined your patreon when you released the first Ted Lasso videos and was really hoping you'd make this video. Somehow, I totally missed that this got released until now. Thank you so much for making this video <3

Late to the party here. Thanks for doing this episode. Ted Lasso has so much wonderful source material to draw from. One thing I noticed that stuck with me in the scene where Jamie punches his father is that when Roy comes over to hug him, Jamie’s first instinct is to tense up - either because of his father related trauma or because he assumes Roy is going to hit out too. Spectacular acting choice by Phil Dunster

Love this episode so so so much, guys. This show was absolutely one of those life-changing journeys. It sound over-the-top. But I know how profoundly it touched me. And know I’m far from alone with that, too. I was going to say it touched me both in meaning and in humor. But I don’t think those are separate things. This show’s beauty has a great deal to do with its genius capturing of what “the full catastrophe” of being a human is like. The heartache and best laughs and fear and relief go hand-in-hand (and sometimes at the same time). Thank you so much for this! The Roy/Jamie hug after the scene w Jamie’s dad is one of the most beautiful things I’ve *ever* seen. And bravest, for Roy. I fuc*in’ ;) love that Roy doesn’t understand it either but also knows it’s right and important. And does it without questioning. That hug was as important for Roy as it was for Jamie, if not more. And such a pure example of what it’s like to be on that vulnerable, confusing, and sometimes terrifying path of choosing to be open, to expand and grow. The pain and beauty of that are inseparable. Letting go of things we used to be/know/believe/want or stepping into things we don’t know can be deeply, deeply painful before it evolves into being freeing. Y’all are the absolute best! Thank you so much for this. …Now fuc* off. 🥰🩵💛🥤🍿

I have just joined your Patreon, and this episode is the perfect gift :) Would you consider reacting to Rebecca and Keeley? I loved seeing this 'girl power' vibe and strong friendship development in a TV show, but I also have a feeling that they are portrayed as too focused on relationships. I lack a 'competent professional' side for women in this show: Rebecca inherited the club as a wife, Keeley expertise in PR after modelling is questionable (and not really supported by the plot). It seems that the only professional woman there is Keeley's CFO, who is portrayed kinda creepy. And the psychologist, who is efficient, but seem to have drinking problems.

The hug in the locker room also had some status influence going on as well, Roy was the only one there that didn’t lose credibility by hugging Jamie…

I think it was so, so important for Roy to be the one to embrace Jamie after his father belittles, abuses, humiliates him in front of the whole team. Not only is there this really tense relationship between them that is relieved in this moment, but everyone else is looking to Roy or Ted to know how to react. How do you react to your teammate being treated in this way? You love him. It doesn’t matter who or how much prior conflict you have. This is a family. Roy will give Jamie what he needs because he needs it and there doesn’t need to be any other reason. -Erin

every attempt at doing any kind of british accent just comes out vaguely scottish with you two. XD

Thank you- and if you want to do Ted Lasso themed Patreon only videos for awhile, I won't object.

Deb Kunkel

I binged it right after seeing the CT episode on Ted Lasso. Thank you Jono and Alan for this!

Justine . PERRIER

This might be my favorite video y'all have ever done. I love this show so much <3

I love too in that bicycle scene how Jamie has to treat Roy kind of like a really angry dog. He is teaching him but has to kinda run away and back off when he gets frustrated. Jamie not remembering losing his virginity I assumed was just dissociative amnesia. I have the same thing, from being pressured into sex by my boyfriend before I was ready. I had no memory of it the very next day and didn't think much of that until I became an adult that had a lot of therapy. Men aren't even allowed to have sexual trauma so... good luck unpacking that Jamie, my boy.

Ted Lasso is something I never expected and I’m glad I gave it a chance during the pandemic. I got my dad into it and now we talk about it often.

I think the Windmill thing is a Don Quixote homage. THAT'S ADORABLE

I only watched Ted Lasso in the last month, and I binged it all the way through. It came at just the right time for me, as I was going through a terrible job loss. I worked on the booking team for the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, and Disney shutting it down just annihilated those of us who worked for it or on it. But then I watched Ted Lasso while I was going through the worst of it, and oh my... it really helped me find a positive trajectory out of it. Just the perspective it put on one chapter of a person's life ending, and new one beginning. It was amazing. I do think Roy was my favorite character overall. I loved his gruff exterior, but his absolutely unrepentant love for his niece so that he'd do any of the girly things she wants him to do, like play "Princess and the Dragon" but he doesn't get to be the Dragon. He's more complex than he initially seemed to be. Jamie's arc was great too. Going from someone who was legit loathsome in season one, to someone that would be gracious enough a person to wear Sam's number while representing England because he knew how hurt Sam was not to be selected to represent Nigeria. It's not quite a Zuko-level redemption arc, but it's close. One thing I would like to see the two of you tackle: Nate. Because I don't think his redemption quite rings as "done" for me. Once he got promoted to coach it almost immediately exposed a vein of genuine cruelty even before the many perceived slights he blamed on Ted. Frankly, I fear for Jade if there's any recidivism there. Anyway, thanks for this. It gave me a smile.

Kayla Henley

Yes!!! Love this!! Thank you so much for delving more into Ted Lasso. A life-bettering show for sure. Loved to see you both enjoy making this just as much too.

Emily Snell-Salvaggio

I recently came across an interview where Brett talks about how he got the part of Roy, and it’s pretty hilarious. I don’t want to spoil it, but anyone who loves Roy should really check it out. I didn’t finish the third season, and I’m definitely going to go back. We need more epic friendship stories like this.

Jimmy Danielle

You guys are so amazing and I appreciate all that you do! Love this show and your thoughts/insights ❤️

Carissa Cunningham
