DIRECTOR'S CUT: THE EMPEROR'S NEW GROOVE and Self Love vs. Narcissism

What is the difference between self love and narcissism? Can narcissistic people change?

Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright react to a Disney experimental era classic, The Emperor's New Groove. They take a look at Kuzco’s narcissism and his journey to a healthier place. Jonathan defines narcissistic personality disorder and contrasts narcissism and self love. Alan dives into the performance process for voice actors and how to direct actors in a sound booth. And they can’t get enough of David Spade’s humor that few people can pull off - acting like a jerk and making it funny!

Thank You Disney for not doing the storybook intro for one movie, at least!

It can also happen to the very best of us. It's NOT a character flaw, or a sign of weakness to become addicted to a chemical. I'm really glad you came out of it and have been open with your story. CT might not be your dream but your work here is moving unto itself and has shifted how I view movies. I've been following y'all since your Aragorn video and it's been a pleasure to watch you flourish and create opportunities for other artists to do the same! <3 Keep it salty - I love a good "bleep" in the kids films lol

Congrats on your healing journey :) I hope Cinema Therapy and other media keep up their compassionate outreach of mental health resources, I think they help a lot of people. And they're fun to watch!

This hits close to home. Sorry you had to go through that. And I hope your ex is staying on the wagon. Addiction sucks.

Alan Seawright

Great insight! S D, for more years than I care to admit, my life was exactly that. I had a core of shame I hid from, and I tried so hard to believe in a "false self" where I was perfect and if anything went wrong I was the victim... My (now) husband gave me compassion and kindness while demonstrating integrity, accountability and boundary-setting. To say this threw me for a loop is an understatement. It took me YEARS to adjust my perspective, accept influence, and be a healthy version of myself, that before I could never even have imagined. Cinema Therapy is now helping me continue my journey to be a person with integrity and compassion. Thank you Jonathan and Alan for all your episodes and especially for ones dealing with narcissism!

I had a friend tell me once (while in the throes of a turmoil from my addict husband) that "all addicts are narcissists." And I think she is absolutely right. As a sober man my ex husband was (and now is, after divorce was his rock bottom) a wonderful, generous, giving, loving person. But as an addict - nothing was his fault, only his needs mattered, he lost his empathy, and he was the perpetual victim when any consequences of his addiction happened. It is truly startling how the messing with the chemistry in our brains can make the same person be an angel or a monster.

you should definitely do more on Yzma and Kronk (and i have to mention her villain song that got cut but the recording is out there)

We got a comment about this on YouTube as well, and we're looking into it. Keen eye! Thanks!

I was the prime targeted age for this film when it came out and I have no shame in admitting I know every line and the editing is it’s own character in and of itself. It’s a huge influence on my video editing now and humor. For better or worse haha. You both are great. Thank you as always <3

I love this episode! but there's a dead pixel in Jono's camera that was driving me bonkers during this episode, I totally thought my laptop had a dead pixel, but no, there's just that one smudge of pink on Jono's chair whenever it's on his camera ahh

Hi, I wanted to ask if you could do a reaction part 2 of Good Will Hunting, an analysis of Will's character and abuse? Thanks

Ana

“Yzma!” “What?!” “UUUHLG!” 😂😂😂

I think this is movie is a writer's dream. The scene where Ezma is falling and they bounce her back up on a giant trampoline? The writers were just like "yeah, let's do that. That's funny." and it WORKS.

Kris Mahoney

I had to see what you were throwing down and the second it started I was like "YEEEES!" Just the tent set up alone is hilarious, but everything about this scene is amazing.

Kris Mahoney

Thanks for sharing (I keep hitting enter for next line ;). These early traumas seem to lead to really extreme coping mechanisms and distance from any emotional core. I've realized in my own journey (through therapy and a deep dive in psychology literature) how unaware I was with my thinking and dysregulation. I understand more now and can see it in others more and have a lot of compassion (from a distance) for them and myself. Unfortunately, in this type of survival mode a lot of behavior hurts others and, like you mentioned, for some saying sorry can elicit a feeling of 'badness', especially in NPD. But leaving a trail of emotional destruction doesn't create compassion so there's that. Wishing you continuing grace, it's a wonderful freedom to accept we can't change others but we can compassionately protect ourselves.

Hey Danielle :)

S D

The main cast of this movie is one of the most solid comedic ensembles in any animated film. It’s one of my top quotable movies too. Absolute masterpiece. Especially since it manages to make you feel for both Yzma and Kuzco despite them being terrible people 😂

Jimmy Danielle

Kronk is an absolute treasure and my only complaint about this episode is that we didn’t get more of him and Yzma. 😂

Jimmy Danielle

Jonathan’s impression of Ezma sounds like if Ezma was voiced by Gilbert Gottfried.😂

Kasen Rogers

Absolutely! It's common for NPDers to be insecure and/or feel like a "bad" person. This plays into why apologizing is difficult. To apologize, you must admit that you were wrong, and being wrong can cause one to have negative self-feelings--they already feel bad about themselves and don't want to confirm with another person. This can also be the reason they lie so much; they really NEED people to think well of them so they can continue to feel okay. The formative years are crucial in forming personality, self-esteem, etc. You have to correct and discipline children without breaking their spirit...which sometimes can be difficult if the parent also has issues that haven't been appropriately handled...which is often the case. For some, like Sandra Bullock says in Hope Floats, "Childhood is what you spend the rest of your life trying to overcome." It's taken me years, but I've learned (and still learn) to give grace and set boundaries; I can't change anyone, but I can give them the space to change while also protecting myself.

Danielle Andrews

Thanks for diving into this film, I haven't seen it in years and forgot how fun it is!

S D

This was another great episode. The discussion of NPD is interesting as Kuzco is the stereotype of one. But there are many presentations and there are a number of therapists that work with this population that see trauma as a major contributing factor, including the "spoiled" narcissist that grew up in transactional family dynamics. A large number of people with NPD operate with a core of shame they hide from, creating a false self they try to believe in.

S D

This movie is a masterpiece! And while I know this scene has absolutely no value to add to the conversation, I just have to throw down the gauntlet and say that this scene is one of the greatest comedic bits of all time: https://youtu.be/9L-epgWa0JE?si=ucApuio5MfLvtOMo

Finally!!!!!!!!!!!! I have been waiting with bated breath for this movie to be covered by you guys :D

This movie's POOPSHOW of a production process has its own documentary, "The Sweatbox". That's how you know a film is truly legendary. 🤭
