Filmmaking Deep Dive: The Making of Cinema Therapy

The whole Cinema Therapy team brings you a deep dive into the making of Cinema Therapy! It's very complicated and time consuming, and we didn't even get into all of it. Let us know, were you surprised at how much goes into making the show?

I think it might be worth considering posting a video like this on YouTube as well. I feel like people might be even more inclined to support you an patreon if they knew just how much work you have to put into every episode. You guys make it seem so easy on screen - not in any way could I have imagined how many people are working on a single episode. Plus I'd also like my cookie now :)

Anna-Lea Blümel

I want my cookie Also, I admire you ALL! will you please be my internet siblings/niece/ nephews/spawn?!?! I live for these deep dives!

1. I am even happier now that I have chosen to support on Patreon for the director's edits do that I can hear everything, including Alan's filmmaking talks. 2. I now have names and faces for some people on the editing team! Emily, Nate, Trevor, and David all do such excellent work! The add ins of clips and subtle jokes are so great, and add in so much flavor. 3. It wasn't mentioned, but whoever does the subtitles is a genius. I recently watched the Pride and Prejudice episode with subtitles on YouTube and was roaring with laughter with the silent subtitles to comically enhance quiet moments 😂.

Welcome back! :)

Cinema Therapy

So I let my annual patreon sub run out in favor of expensive family activities. However, the past two months I was so sad watching the show on youtube. The episodes are so short 😳 Plus, all the patreon extras are great. So I made arrangements and I'm back! I've been watching this show since the very beginning. The youtube algorithm smiled on me in 2020 when it suggested the Frodo episode and you guys weren't even in the same building. I hit subscribe and have watched almost every episode since. Thank you for all the hard work you do to make this a thing!

Jonathan here. I don't fake it. 😁 With the Therapist Reacts videos I watch the movie in advance and maybe request a scene or two to react to. But generally speaking I don't know what clips have been pulled or what theme we will be discussing. I am heavily involved with all the other episodes though.

Cinema Therapy

The two most surprising parts of this is the copyright jail EVERY TIME. Why does Jonathan fake like he doesn't know the episode is going to be about if he helps so much in the script writing. I can see how length would cause people to stop watching, but I love Alan's talks on the film techniques that help tell the story. It is the combination of the two of your expertise that make this show so wonderful and healing to watch.

Heather George

Finally! Someone said it! There is no Cinema Therapy without Alan. And, guys, let's applause Alan's incredible ability to put in plain words technical concepts so we all understand the theory behind what we are seeing!

Dorikuu Garcia

Anyone who clicks away when Alan starts his technospeak has wits as thick as Tewkesbury mustard! I coughed up money to join this patreon specifically to get to hear Alan's technospeak. The first word of the name is Cinema. I want equal parts Cinema and Therapy! Also, thanks for talking about the copywrite issue. I've been wondering how you all managed that. I can't imagine how much it would cost if you had to pay for those clips, I assume it would make this project undoable.

BJ

The filmmaker side of things is the stuff I absolutely can’t get enough of. I can’t imagine that being where anyone would click away! More Alan babbles on movie stuffs! 🤩 I love that, if it isn’t on YouTube, there are Patreon director’s cuts vs YouTube. It’s like a he said/he said — watching the same story from different povs. 🩵 like Kieslowski! 😅

This is the best comment ever. - Jono

Cinema Therapy

The Patreon sub is worth is just for Alan's filming nerdouts!

Johnny

This is SO MUCH WORk!! I just want to take a moment and thank EVERYONE who helps make these videos possible because I ADORE them SO SO much. I always look forward to each and every one plus all the extras. Thank You all sooooo much it is very apprecicated

Allison Charter

Good thing I signed up for their patreon because I LOVE LOVE LOVE the filmmaking aspects and tid-bits! :D

Allison Charter

The stats don't lie! If I talk about filmmaking craft for more than about 20 seconds, we start losing people. That's why we call them Director's Cuts on Patreon, because it's mostly just a lot more of me. Unless they're one of our really REALLY long ones, then there's lots more Jono too. I've not only made my peace with it, I'm kinda glad. I never really planned on being on-camera talent. I don't dislike it, but it's not my true passion either. 🤷🏼‍♂️ -alan

Cinema Therapy

Ya please make it long episode for the Potter head 💗 And by the way good background music 😁 And appreciate the effort 😊

Shreepriya Patil

who in the world clicks away from Alan's filmmaking nerdouts? these two are both giving the goods with their expertise.

I also like chocolate chip! Virtual cookie coming your way! - Emily

Show ruined!

Cinema Therapy

Are you telling me that when Jono asks "What are we watching/doing today?" He doesn't really need to know :( ?!

Lucy Trjo

I LOVED this. So interesting! ♥️

Seldanz_

I find it weird that ppl click away when Alan talks about filmmaking stuff, it’s really interesting to me at least. I’d love if y’all did a deep dive on light/lighting in films and how it serves a narrative, influences a scene, etc

Julia Pearson

THIS IS SO AMAZING!!! I love Behind the Scenes stuff and this hit the mark. Make as many of these of as possible... I'll gladly watch them all! Thanks for the insight and all the work everyone puts in. PS Emily, I belive the title is spelled "Super Genius". 😆 PPS I like chocolate chip. 🍪

Wendy Darling

Really enjoyed learning about the process. Especially enjoyed how you are navigating the copyright minefield. It feels like there’s a reasonable about of ‘f*** it’ involved with the back and forth between scary looking copyright claims. Also who is clicking AWAY from Alan’s filmmaking explanations?! Is that not why we are here?? Well half of why we are here. After all we need therapy.

Pam Jackson

I really love Alan's film making commentary! Part of why I like cinema therapy is because it combines two of my big special interests: psychology and film making/acting. Also you two are super fun and extremely validating for people who struggle with the issues you're talking about. ❤️

Smeeson

You make it look so easy -- wow 😳

Angie

No suggestions for how to make it easier - but just wanted to say, we appreciate you all!!

Abigail Friedman

People who click away from Alan's filmmaking wisdom are weak, and their bloodline is weak.
