DIRECTOR'S CUT: Grief, Connection, and Perspective-Taking in BROTHER BEAR with Director Aaron Blaise

How do you open yourself up to understanding another perspective?

Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright are reacting to Brother Bear with co-director, Aaron Blaise, and discussing themes of grief, connection, and figuring out who you want to be. They focus on Kenai’s journey of self-discovery and how he comes to embrace his love totem in an unexpected way. Jonathan explores Kenai’s grief and his literal perspective taking when Kenai becomes a bear. Aaron talks about the writing process with a room full of people with brothers and how surprisingly therapeutic it was.

Haven’t seen Brother Bear yet, definitely will add it to my list! Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed the filmmaking discussion in this one. Paused in the middle to jump down a Loop Group YouTube rabbit hole. I love finding out about jobs tucked into the corners of an industry that are important, but not something an outsider would even imagine.

So happy you guys finally did brother bear! ❤️ Growing up with this movie with my siblings and we thought when the nothern lights came here in Sweden every winter that there were spirits in them 🥰🌌 And, I have to say that the swedish version of ”On my way” is even better than the english one actually. It’s sooo good 🙌🏽🥰

This comment might be a little long, but this episode meant a lot to me. I'm the youngest of four and the only girl. My two oldest brother are my "half" brothers (not that it matters). My oldest brothers aren't blood related but it's never mattered and they've been best friends their whole lives. My oldest brother just lost his grandmother and my other brother was able to be there with him the whole time. It's never been a question that they're brothers. I showed this movie to my son the night before the funeral and the connections between this movie and my brothers made me very emotional while watchig it. This all happened just last week and then this episode came out.

This is such a great film! I was so excited to see it pop on my feed, it has been one of my favorite movies since I was a kid and watching this video made me so happy! I wish more Disney movies like this and Meet The Robinsons got more attention, as I think they are some of the best impactful stories Disney has ever told.

I remember being about 10 when this movie came out and watching it on DVD on repeat. Now as an adult, I have a new appreciation for just how nuanced the storytelling is! The themes, the symbolism, not to mention the beautiful production. Truly a one-of-a-kind film.

A gorgeous, poignant film with a message as important now more than ever. And another win for my main man Mr. Phil Collins. What a lovely gentleman, that Aaron Blaise. I loved getting to know more about the behind the scenes! You’re both wonderful interviewers. “You’re good men. And thorough.”

Glad you guys got around to this movie, and are getting a kick out of the Experimental Disney era! I really love the atmosphere of this movie and I have to say your guys’ review on this helps me find a new appreciation for it. If there is something I wish this could’ve been different about this movie (nothing against Aaron Blaise or his team, I understood why they did what they did) is putting in the original confession scene. It’s probably just me and my masochism, but I really appreciated how uncomfortable and heart wrenching that deleted scene was. I know that how I feel whenever I need to confess something serious. But still, brownie points for Aaron Blaise! Thanks for the wonderful movie!

No way!!! One of my all-time favorite Disney films 💕 I don’t know what it is about this film exactly, but I have VIVID memories of seeing it in theatres when I was little, VIVID memories of watching it on repeat at home and singing the songs to it, VIVID memories of experiencing death in the family and connecting to this film in a whole new way… and it’s one of the only films that has and still does bring me to tears. I’m just so mesmerized by the story and the animation every single time. Thank you so so much for taking our suggestions for this film, and!! Getting Aaron Blaise to join on it!! One of the most influential animators out there. Thank you 🙌🏻
