Alan & Jono's Watching/Reading List: November 2023

Alan:

Hello Heroes!

November. This month was insane because of the unending demands of shoots, and also, we prepped a TV series (you’ll have to wait to find out) that ate our lives. But in a good way! Hoping for more free time in December to read/watch/play!

What I’m reading!

What I’m watching!

What I’m playing!

And…

Watch Movies! (And television, and read books, and play video games)

Jono:

Hi all! Wishing good things for all of you and, if you celebrate Thanksgiving, that the holiday treated you well!

I've been watching Avatar: The Last Airbender. I was in my twenties when it came out originally, and at the time not keen on anything on Nickleodeon. But I've circled back, and it's up there with The Clone Wars and Batman: The Animated Series for "kids" (quote unquote) shows with storytelling that's better than most grownup programming. What amazing, powerful character arcs, hot damn!

Speaking of The Clone Wars, I just finished that series with my kids. The last four episodes (the series finale) stand with the very best Star Wars has to offer. Stunning work.

I saw Disney's Wish, which is better than the reviews make it out to be. It's formulaic Disney and you've seen it done better, but it's not bad at all. The songs slap, and I was genuinely moved by the ending.

Taking a break from all my psychology reading to enjoy a little Jane Austen. I bought the all-in-one hardback novel collection from Costco. I've seen the movies based on her work, but it's time to enjoy the actual books! Starting with Sense and Sensibility.

What have you been watching and reading this month?

Alan & Jono's Watching/Reading List: November 2023

Comments

I've been making my way through the Wisteria Witches Mysteries by Amge;a {e[[erand am currently on the 12th book, Winter in Wisteria. It's like cotton candy for my brain. Light and fluffy but still has murder, monsters, and the occassional armageddon. I'm also trying to make my way through Healing with Poisons: Potent Medicines in Medieval China by Yan Liu. I just started watching Hannibal and now I'm ever so slightly obsessed with Mads Mikkelsen. I've enjoyed his performance in other things but, dude, there's something about him being a gourmet serial killer in a suit that has...caught my interest. Besides, how can I not be happy watching Gillian Anderson? I'm not playing anything interesting, just Merge Dragons on my phone while I'm supposed to be working :-D

BJ

Allie, did we really become CT patreons within weeks of each other without so much as a bitmoji about it??

BJ

OMG Persuasion is my favorite, too, and I came into the comments to encourage him to read it and not stop after S&S or P&P! Anne deserves All The Love.

BJ

Play Final Fantasy X

Zaylon Sevias

I'm with you guys - it is LOTR SEASON!! I'm on book 5 or 6 of that Red Rising series <3

Nova Villmark

I’ve been reading: Heidi Grows Up Little Women A Christmas Carol (one of my favorites) I’ve been watching: Helluva Boss (which I think a CT video on that show would be interesting) Rewatching arcane The Great Mouse Detective The Santa Clause. Barbie in the nutcracker. I have mostly been rewatching movies on my own time. Nothing new right now. I’ve been playing: Bolt the video game (one of my favs) Just Dance Gargoyles remastered Mario cart.

Maggie Ray

I had a great month. Started with getting married and ended with becoming your patron!

QueeneAllie

Ahh I am so glad you are playing Deathloop. I am actually re-playing just cause it is so much fun. I am a little bias cause I love Arkane but you know

B

Ah! I just finished Iron Flame, and I need therapy after that ending 😂

Mia Williams

Random thought: If you're still looking for an angle for doing therapy on Speed Racer, how about gifted children and parenting gifted children? Me, I've been reading Yotsuba&! all month. This child may not be a prodigy, but she's definitely some kind of bird.

Amelie W

Yes! So we discovered the show a couple of weeks ago and binged the crap out of it. We realized that they were still dropping new episodes when we ran out of road! So jarring when that happens. I will say Ed looks mighty old this season! I love all of the alternative history news reels they put in. BTW, if you like alternative history type stuff like this with space, you should read The Calculating Stars by Mary Robinette Kowal. That whole series of books has a similar "what if" with our space program feel as For All Mankind.

Amy Robinson

Are you watching the new season of For All Mankind? I haven't had a chance to start it yet, but have loved the previous seasons! - Alan

I just got to see Godzilla Minus One, made by the original studio, Toho. In my opinion, this is a great Godzilla movie. The feel of Toho Studios but with modern storytelling sensibilities. None of the cheesiness of some of the Showa era films, with great interpersonal drama and solid special effects. I feel like some of the history was slightly off, but as an old white guy, I don’t want to second guess a film made by Japanese people in Japan. A must-see for Godzilla fans, and highly recommended if it has piqued your interest at all. See it on the biggest screen you can!

Michael Charboneau

Just finished my annual read of LoTR books and have just decided I might as well join the band wagon and read the Witcher books. I’ve seen the show and aside from the amazing special effects and cinematography, I had a hard time understanding the timeline and just general geography of the Continent. I figured the books might provide some clarity. For watching, my dad has never seen any of the Marvel movies ever, so we just started watching in universe chronological order. Of course he liked Captain America: First Avenger, but at the end he asked, “Wait, he’s the first? So there’s more than one Avenger?” Oh so funny and sweet at the same time. Dad, you have like 20+ movies to get through, so sit tight.

Crystal Kirkley

We started watching Monarch: Legacy of Monsters on AppleTV+. It’s not all gratuitous monster battles like the movies and our whole family is waiting each week to see where the characters end up. (Also in the middle of a whole family re-watch of ATLA as we await the live action Netflix show.) Just started reading The Weaver and the Witch Queen. Old Norse society, magic is real, omens and prophecies and all the good stuff so far.

Kristin 🦦

Currently reading Little Women, working through the Foundation trilogy by Isaac Asimov, and re-reading the Witcher books. On the watching front, I am re-watching Ted Lasso and Shrinking as palette cleansers between re-watches of The Boys and Band of Brothers. In the world of video games I am playing Starfield, but not really since I am mostly just building crazier and crazier ships in the ship builder. Hope everyone is doing spectacularly awesome and if you're not...you'll get there :)

Every day, the chances of a Villian Therapy Azula episode become greater.

Traxathon

I always tell people, watch the first 3 episodes. If at the end of episode 3 you're thinking "this isn't for me" then that's fine. But episode 3 is the first point where the series shows you what it's capable of in terms of storytelling.

Traxathon

I need to properly watch ATLA. When it came out, it looked like an American knockoff of anime as a hollow cash grab and I was immediately turned off. The art style seemed like it was trying too hard to be quirky (Nickelodeon's marketing and the perception of anime at the time did NOT help...). As an adult, seeing how many people genuinely praise the story and character development, I'm happy to give it a proper shot and eat crow.

Smidge

Spider-Man 2 was amaaaazing!!! I’ve played it through a couple of times and I cry each time!! I have also gone back into Death Stranding again and I had forgotten how much I loved that game! Thanks for getting me hooked on Ted Lasso 😂 As a side note, I’d love to see you guys do the psychology of Joel from the last of us!

Jennifer Redmond

wish was wonderful and fot ATLA do zuko and azula on brother sister realtionship

Josh Jones

Alan, you are not alone. I too prefer the theatrical cuts of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. They were great when I saw them in the theater, they are still great today. The extendeds are nice to have seen, and then go back to theatrical. It is however contentious in my house as my wife prefers the extended cuts.

Jeff

Ooh, that trilogy sounds intriguing. Might have to check it out! And so glad you're enjoying Ted Lasso! Seriously one of the best TV shows.

Cinema Therapy

EEEEEEEP!!!! 🤩🤫🤭

Grace Mangum

*Palpatine voice "Goooood. Goooood!"

Chris Breezy

Yeah, the theatrical LotR movies do have some better cinema narrative execution, and Cinema Wins in YouTube addresses it quite nicely, if you haven't seen those videos, I'd recommend them. Also I endorse your rereading Pride and Prejudice! It can only enrich your life, I'm quite sure!

Chris Breezy

Red Rising was an amazing trilogy and there are MANY fans also wanting a series adaptation because it WOULD sell! I also have yet to pick up the second trilogy but will get to it in good time. I finished Jane Austen's Emma this year and will move on to her shortest works, them being Mansfield Park, Persuasion and Northanger Abbey. Sense and Sensibility is dearly beloved byy heart and I'm glad a girl convinced me to read it all those years ago. As for games; I've been playing Destiny 2s new season, Naraka Bladepoint, my favorite Battle Royale as well as Armored Core 6 and getting started on Final Fantasy XIV online! Beyond those, I've played a fair 40+ hours of Starfield in the last month and a half. Space exploration and adventuring has been very refreshing and I'm excited to see it's mod community explode someday! Movie-wise, I've gained immense fondness for 2011s Moneyball with Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill. I've almost bought an Oakland A's hat a couple times in the last week lol. Gonna rewatch Tenet soon because I need more Chris Nolan in my movie diet and I'm still not over how much fun I had in all 3 theater viewings of it

Chris Breezy

Someday may come sooner than you think... 🤫

Lately I’ve been playing Spider-Man 2, and it’s a blast! There’s still the daily Marvel Snap game and Cine2dle of course. For the Wolf is the book I sometimes read on my work breaks, thought I would be digging it more but I’m kinda ambivalent right now. Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is out so I’m slowly making my way through it, it’s got a fun style but I’m having a hard time getting into it because the movie is so ingrained into my brain. I wasn’t a fan of Kotm either Alan, definitely with you on Godzilla ‘14 though!

Andrew Feistner

There was a looooooong period in my life where I read Austen's Pride and Prejudice one a year, like clockwork. It's been a couple of decades since, but now I feel inspired for a reread... and maybe I'll dig my Trollope books out of storage too while I'm at it... I've been on a Discworld (by Sir Terry Pratchett) reread lately, kicked off by how much I adore Good Omens. Alan, I agree that the theatrical releases mostly worked better as movies for LotR, but there's so much extra content that is so dear to my heart I can't bear not to watch the extended editions. God I love those movies. Captain America picking up Mjolnir in Avengers and fighting Thanos alone, followed by Sam's "On your left" and the reappearance of, like, everyone is one of my all-time favorite cinematic moments -- but nothing will ever beat the lighting of the beacons and Gondor's call for aid. Not even the 1990s Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth in wet pants ;-)

Abigail Friedman

I am currently reading the Starfishers Trilogy by Glen Cook. A sci-fi space opera retelling of the Norse myths by my favorite author? Yes please! I am currently just finishing up season 2 of Ted Lasso thanks to your review of tv therapists and all I have to say is WOW. Thank you for introducing me to this show. I just ordered a Roy Kent AFC Richmond jersey so I Alcan participate in sports days at work and still be a total geek.

Chris N

I'm so glad that Jono enjoyed ATLA!!! I recently watched it for the first time myself. Such incredible storytelling and character work!!!! Would love to see an episode of Cinema Therapy on Zuko someday.

Grace Mangum

Jono - I’m so excited you’re reading Jane Austen!! The movies are usually great depending on who is adapting but the books!!! My favorite is Persuasion so I’m hoping you enjoy it too.

Natalie Carbone

I just finished reading Iron Flame, the second book in Rebecca Yarros’ Empyrean series. for the second time, the last few pages made my mouth drop and shout out “what the actual 🦆??” I haven’t seen much of the new films out as of late, the only one that comes to mind for me is Elemental, which I did enjoy, and though Wish is getting a lot of criticism, I’ll still watch it when it comes to Disney+. Been wanting to rewatch the ATLA series, I really loved it, though like you Jono, I watched it well after the series had ended. Alan has me curious about The Blood Tree, going to have to see if I can find an audio version of that on Libby!

Lauren Frey

I also saw Wish! I saw an early screening. It was cute. Star was the star. Valentino was fun. So many Disney Easter eggs for the mega fan to try to find them all. Fun songs. Not their best but definitely not their worst.
