DIRECTOR'S CUT: 6 Reasons Hiccup and Astrid are Couple Goals (according to a couples therapist)

What makes a couple #couplegoals?

Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright are basking in the delight of Hiccup and Astrid from the How to Train Your Dragon series. This was meant to be a Movie Couple Therapy episode, but once Jonathan watched the movies, he found no therapy to give, so he shares six reasons why they’re couple goals and why we should model our relationships after them. Alan talks about the animation and amazing artistry of these movies, but he can’t (and shouldn’t) shut up about the masterpiece of the score composed by John Powell. He also can’t stop crying when he hears it.

I loved the mother in the final movie. She could have done either of those encouraging talks. Instead she prepares them to solve problems with out her. Chooses to have their bonds strengthen as a couple. For a mother who missed out on a lot of her sons life, that is huge.

Alan's Astrid imitating Hiccup sounds like Frank the frill necked lizard from Rescuer's Down Under! https://youtu.be/rkclSQnBwj4?si=z8KVodQy14tYLeA2

Alan: I'm sorry for your loss! 😝

Bec: I'll tell my friend to get right on that. 🤣

My wedding was severely lacking in spear-maidens.

Jono and Alan, if you want to see some cool viking clothes IRL, I will probably post my own creation in the "show your creativity" channel on discord on Sunday

Man, I started crying at that last scene. These two have been my #couplegoals for years and I love them so much! Thanks for doing this video! 😁

I'm still not a fan of 3 because the ending... really doesn't make any sense (THEY WON!!) but the animation and Hiccup and Astrid's relationship is so good. Throughout the movies and the TV series, it's been a joy to watch and I'm so glad you guys did a video on them <3

Fun fact! I was in a viking wedding 2 years ago. It was on a rural mountaintop in West Virginia in October. The colors were amazing. The temperature wasn't. Lol but it was stunning. And I got to walk on the grooms side carrying a spear so.... I was feeling pretty badass. 🤣

Tiana Horsey-Daydreamer

Oh yeah, absolutely same here!

I just absolutely love those movies! I often tear up, when I so much as just think about this score 🥺🖤 it gets me everytime! I just love the dynamic those 2 have. Thank you for summing this up so beautifully! Just gonna dry my tears over here. Wholesome Video ✨🖤

To be fair, I also cry to some soundtracks without watching the movie! 😂😭

The goals, all the goals! I love the healthy communication. Not holding back on what you want to say but saying it in a thoughtful and respectful way. Thank you for making this video!! :D :D :D

Now I need to track down the series and rewatch it all; it’s been waaay too long. I still never actually watched the last one, which is a crime I need to atone for.

Agreed, I love this series so much! I was an adult when the first one came out, but I think I saw it in theaters at least 3-4 times while awaiting the DVD release 😂

Best animated series ever! They teach so much about acceptance, grief, family relationships, society integration vs expectations, prejudgment, unconditional love... This is my favorite saga of all times. Eyes closed.
