DIRECTOR'S CUT: Therapist Reacts to KLAUS

How do you let go of bitterness? What's your favorite Christmas/holiday movie?

Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright wish you a happy festive season with a highly requested holiday episode on Klaus! They talk about the concept of the reframe when Jesper, Klaus, and the townspeople have perspective shifts that bring them to a better place. Jonathan explains why Klaus is a blueprint for how to get out of the misery and loneliness that some experience around the holidays.  Alan dives into the technical mastery of Klaus's hand-drawn animation - they invented new technology! And Alan's tears have finally dried up... it's a Christmas miracle?

This review actually made me a little mad – at myself. When y’all first posted it last year, I skipped it, as I hadn’t seen the movie and it didn’t seem like my cuppa tea. But now, fresh off watching and becoming utterly charmed with the ‘Paddington’ movies thanks to your recent review, I noticed this again and decided to watch it. And then I watched the movie. And dangit, it’s so, so good and sweet, and I’m kinda angry at myself for missing out on it this long! Thanks for inspiring me to watch it. What an absolutely lovely film. It totally deserves to be a new Christmas classic.

Jono, if you like Norm Macdonald, and haven't seen it, you must find The Moth Joke he told on Late Night with Conan O'Brien. Then find Conan telling the backstory of this joke after Norm's death. I am not exaggerating ... it is the greatest joke-telling I have ever seen.

Melissa

Skipping the most important Margú scene is actually a punishable offense I believe.

That Stranger

I love this movie! I saw it when it first streamed on Netflix and now watch it every year. Thank you for this.

Sadie

I appreciated there choice of using the Sergeant instead of a montage of previous postman. The Sergeant reaction of surprise at Jesper being promoted as a postman and then literally speaking up for this man he hates at the impossible task.

Heather George

What was the type of therapy you spoke of John, about reframing?

Ariza Nel

Margu is Sami and indigenous people from Scandinavia. Her side of the conversation is in Sami. I think there's a transcript of her lines in English

Emily Cambron

How much arm twisting might it take to do some Therapist Reacts to some holiday classics like the stop motion Bakshi Christmas specials?

Amy Petty

Or the movie "The Sea Beast" is really fun with all the animation and how they create these giant sea monsters. One of my favorites for sure!!!

Hannah

"Screw you, Westboro Baptist." As a queer person who lives a couple miles away from them and drive past them all the time: PREACH!

Magnus Taliesin

Another movie I watched for the first time right now so I could watch cinema therapy about it :D Design seems to me sometimes nearly burtonlike and almost lovecraftian. Like it's all pretty grimm, dark, misty and desolate. So cool :D Boatman is my favourite character. I also felt a strong emperor's new groove vibes. Story kind of reminds me of Terry Pratchett some parts are nearly same as Going postal (great book and movie by the way - Fraud and thief is forced to become postmaster and make post work and he uses all his wits and tricks and eventually gains some moral motivation). If you watch christmas movies, you should try Violent night. It sounds so stupid and as B movie and it has no right to be as great in every way as it is. Harbour acts the shit out of it, violence is on tarrantino comedic quality and it also manages to be wholesome and deep, with cool lore and characters. And it also still has christmas spirit.

BlackAdder

Oh, wow, I NEVER knew about the technology behind this movie! That's amazing! I knew it looked cool and unique and had a hand-drawn feel despite, obviously, being CG. I didn't know it WAS hand-drawn! I love it even more now! Reminds me of how Arcane was animated, but in reverse. The animators made models of the characters and the computers animated it, but all the textures, including the lighting, was hand-painted frame by frame. I'm just in awe of the extremes people will go to to create such unique and beautiful art!

Lightning Dragon Master

I just watched that. So good!

Cinema Therapy

Noelle (Anna Kendrick and Bill Hader) might be a good Christmas movie. What happens when the family puts all the weight on one sibling and expects nothing from the other.

Demi

This movie had been awaited with such excitement by the whole animation community. I am so happy you covered it, and thank you for your commentary on the technology, Alan! It's so nice to see how technology can assist artists and allow them to make the best stories possible. It has instantly become one of my favorite Christmas/Holidays movies and watching the episode made me want to watch it again. Thank you for such a nice episode, a real Christmas gift it was. I hope you're all having a good rest during the holidays, and you're enjoying a couple good snowball fights!

Marie-Soleil Cha

It's not Christmasy or anything, but I feel like Nimona has some meat for you guys.

Izzy Chambers

I saw your comment before I watched the episode and got so excited it might be my turn! 😆 But nope. It'll be us one of these days!

Amy Moody

This is my favorite Christmas movie. I've put in a request for this a couple of years ago and I'm so glad you reacted to it. By the way, I have officially joined your patron. I am look forward to rewatching your stuff, just more now!

Brandon Payne

looking forward to the next time

zeklama

That’s fair 😂 you definitely win the stand out form the crowd award 😂

☮️🪬Sonar IllusionFox🪬☮️

"Tokyo god father's" please :) I think you guys would love this film

Rena nice

Ahh, Klaus is soo good! One of my new favorite Christmas movies, glad you guys talked about it 😁

Yani Dodge

Never heard of this film before, but wow, the animation is so pretty to look at! That alone will make me watch it. Animation is the best genre. I think combining 2D and 3D animation is a lovely compromise to get more 2D animation back in the (very technical now) animated film business. Love the Christmas suit’s comeback, love the talk on perspective taking. As for the favorite Christmas film question… mmm yup, always gonna be The Polar Express for me. No amount of perspective change could alter that tradition for me. 😂

Emily Snell-Salvaggio

I'm not familiar. Looking it up now!

Cinema Therapy

Well thank you!

Cinema Therapy

Very good show!

Cinema Therapy

Alan's so tall it's the only time I'm more conspicuous than he is.

Cinema Therapy

Such a wholesome payoff!

Cinema Therapy

Wearing that suit is a time-honored tradition going back to 2020 on the channel. May it live forever in our hearts.

Cinema Therapy

Hello Amy Robinson! We'll see what we can do :)

Cinema Therapy

Just watched that with my kids last night! So much fun. - Jono

Cinema Therapy

Thanks for the suggestion!

Cinema Therapy

NGL, it's a great week for us too. We like to make people happy.

Cinema Therapy

Don't pull a hammy!

Cinema Therapy

Good choices!

Cinema Therapy

Is that what that sound was?

Cinema Therapy

You're welcome!

Cinema Therapy

I would love to watch you react to Freeks and Geeks. I know you generally don't do TV shows, but this one is such a gem! And very much underrated. Happy holidays!

Olga Makarova

Sorry, I don’t have a favorite holiday film. Your Christmas suit looks amazing though.😊

Raiyu Lilliputian

Looking awesome in that suit Jono , you won’t be hard to spot in a crowd 😉😆☮️💚

☮️🪬Sonar IllusionFox🪬☮️

The suit was already loud last year, now it´s yelling;)

zeklama

I feel like you could do a whole episode on how Jesper's relationship with Márgu shows his evolution. I cry every time I see her with her toy and how she's accepting of him no matter how much he pushed her away. Honestly, one of the best Christmas movies!

Demi

I’m going to have to watch this movie now. That suit is…loud Jono

Justin Glispie

Fireheart!!!! Such a good movie and a lot of good messages for not only women but kids in general. 10/10 for sure!!!

Hannah

Man, 2 different Amys got shout outs, neither of them was me. Ah well, maybe next time. :)

Amy Robinson

Speaking of hidden gems, I think you guys would LOVE Nimona. Lots to sink your teeth into with that one!

Rachel Spires

Such a great film! I remember seeing that it had been released, but never got the opportunity to actually see it. So glad you did this one. I’d love to see an episode on The Holdovers; gives me similar vibes in some ways.

Catherine Ginn

Best week EVER!!!!! ATLA AND Klaus?! GAHHHHHH!!!!!!!

Kaila Rawlinson

The way I RAN here when I saw Klaus, so excited you guys did this one!!!

Amelia Hansen

I let go of emotions, bitterness included, by sitting with it and acknowledging them. I personify my body parts and find the emotions and have a chat with them in the body part it’s at. Sometimes have a therapy session with it too. My favorite movies for Christmas is Christmas in Connecticut, Spirited, and the Holiday

Julie Tracy

Apologies if anyone was disturbed by the high pitched squeal I just made.

Wayward Ace

I LOVE this movie!! Thanks for doing a holiday special!
