How much were psychologists (and other kinds of professionals near that field) consulted during the writing process?
Jessica White
2024-01-17 21:57:02 +0000 UTCCould you talk about the collaboration between director Pete Docter and Dr. Dacher Keltner (professor at UC Berkeley and expert on human emotion)?

2024-01-09 18:21:47 +0000 UTCEven though anxiety is a branch of fear, I agree it manifests differently especially if the anxiety is pathological or trauma informed (nature vs. nurture kind of thing). (Just like sadness vs. depression)

2024-01-09 18:14:17 +0000 UTCLove Inside Out! My question (kind of a two-parter): Why were these emotions chosen specifically and not more or other emotions besides anger, disgust, fear, sadness, and joy? I can see how every emotion portrayed had a big role in the plot of the film, but were these emotions picked because of where you wanted the film to go or did the plot of the film come about naturally from the emotions you wanted Riley to express?

2024-01-09 00:14:24 +0000 UTCI’m excited to watch this episode! Questions for the creators: What would Riley’s mind have looked like if she were of a different culture (not American or western)? Is there a plan to look into the minds of people of different cultures in Inside Out 2?
Milena Fox
2024-01-08 18:58:12 +0000 UTCHow did Pixar perfectly illustrate the stages of abstract thought? Did the writers and animators work with psychologists and behaviorists to help them animate abstract thought? The idea of animating abstract thought feels so abstract that it seems impossible. How did Pixar animate a concept that is so complex, but my 5 year old can follow what is going on?
Ryan Olsen
2024-01-08 17:28:32 +0000 UTCHow did any of them manage to create this movie without sobbing the whole way through it? As someone who moved to a new state at 9 years old and had a traumatic experience with it, this movie makes me cry a lot. I still put it on for my kids now and then because I feel like it helps them know how to characterize their feelings and know that sometimes hard feelings can lead to better things, it’s part of the growing process, etc. But it feels like such a personal perspective to this film that I wonder how easy it is to work on these deeply emotional sequences and tap into those feelings without just crying all the time 😅 It just feels like the realist childhood pain stuff, that gets me every time. And as a parent watching movies like this, knowing my kids will also experience this kind of pain as they grow and wanting to do my best to support and love them through it… I’m a writer but I don’t know if I could make something like this as a creator because it feels like it would be so hard to tap into that childhood trauma to get the realism needed for the production to be successful. -Erin

2024-01-08 16:52:41 +0000 UTCI’m curious if the movie crew had onsite therapist to consult in how each emotion takes turn in the movie plot? Does the one emotion portray one character choice a metaphor for internal family system?
He
2024-01-08 10:06:02 +0000 UTCAs someone who takes several anti-anxiety and anti-depressants, how would the emotions look/act on screen when someone takes meds?
Alexis
2024-01-08 09:04:55 +0000 UTCHow much creative freedom did you had on this project and, if it happened, what did you had to change as a request of the higher ups that you would have liked to keep in the movie.
Mr.Hide
2024-01-06 17:58:26 +0000 UTCDid you ever have the idea of mindfulness in your minds when creating the film? I loved the idea that sadness is not only a part of our lives, but necessary. I couldn't help but notice that subtle message of accepting your emotions rather than fighting them.
Amanda Whitney
2024-01-06 15:07:08 +0000 UTCIf you were to draw the emotions in YOUR head, what would they look like? Which emotion would be the leader?
Brenden Krogh
2024-01-06 01:10:46 +0000 UTCHow did you guys decide on the design of the world of the emotions? What were you trying to convey with how the emotions are designed and the characters in the movie. The whole atmosphere feels vast and looming.
Summer McIntosh
2024-01-06 00:34:42 +0000 UTCOne of the things I enjoy is rewatching movies and discovering new messages and perspectives that hit different during different stages in my life. Has your perspective on the message of the movie changed overtime? Have people shared what hit for them that surprised you?
Starlord
2024-01-05 20:58:09 +0000 UTCP.S. I am so glad you guys did this film and will be doing it again with an insider perspective. I’ll be watching the movie with my son soon so he can have a better understanding of his own emotions (his speech development is delayed, and it’s often frustrating to try to find out why he’s throwing a tantrum for, what feels like to me and hubby, no apparent reason)
Hikari Yamato
2024-01-05 19:11:50 +0000 UTC1) how much of your own life did you pull for the storyline? 2) how much fun did you have developing the “abstract thoughts and concepts” scene? 3) how do you decide who to cast for which character’s voice actor? 4) how do you direct voice actors (who are generally a single person in a studio in front of a microphone) as opposed to “regular” actors who have a lot more physical “props” and other people to work against? 5) how hard/easy was the animation overall? what scene was the hardest to animate and why? 6) was there any time that you wish you weren’t doing this film/industry? (And if they feel comfortable sharing - why?) 7) what would you say to your younger self about all you have done up to now (10-20-30 years ago self, they pick which “decade” they want to answer) 8) if you were drawn as an emotion, what would you look like?
Hikari Yamato
2024-01-05 19:00:05 +0000 UTCWas there ever an "ah-ha" moment when someone on the team either thought of a new angle or experienced something that was later used in the film?
Allison Hall
2024-01-05 16:14:49 +0000 UTCIf you were to hypothetically look Inside the head of someone that is neurodivergent, would you have reflected the disorders more with the console or the characters? Furthermore, while such would probably have been be too heavy a topic for a family-friendly-focused movie, if there was, say, a hypothetixal spinoff or such, how would the creators portray minds with some of the common disorders like autism, ADHD, PTSD as well as other various emotional dysregulation, traumas, etc?
Rhyla
2024-01-05 12:30:44 +0000 UTCWhat hurdles did you feel to try and represent the complexities of emotion and psychology in more simplistic/understandable ways through the movie? Was it tough to come up with ideas that were fun to watch, and creative, but that still felt faithful to the realities of how the mind works?
Vanessa Graves
2024-01-05 05:44:00 +0000 UTCI am SO glad you are doing this movie! Inside Out is a movie that I relate to VERY deeply and because of that is quite special to me. I have a few questions: How can we use Inside Out to teach children about hard topics like depression? How accurately does Inside Out represent depression in general? I know it represents my experiences with depression well. Are there any other mental health issues that this movie addresses? How can this movie help teach children about emotions and managing them? What are some yellow and blue memories you have? Can any therapeutic tools be pulled out of this movie? What are your islands of personality? Which emotion is head honcho for each of you? I would also love to see an episode on Toy Story 4, especially in relation to Forky and suicide. I can't say for sure but, “I Can't Let You Throw Yourself Away” very well may have saved my life. And I guess the Disney Channel movie Z-O-M-B-I-E-S is a bit outside of your typical wheelhouse, but this movie and the two sequels were paradigm shiftingly powerful for me and helped me accept myself with all my quirks.

2024-01-05 04:56:06 +0000 UTCWhat was the most challenging part of creating this film and what was the inspiration behind making this amazing film?
Rena nice
2024-01-05 04:45:11 +0000 UTCCan you touch on how scarily normal it is to numb or "greyed out" like Riley and her console did after the idea to run away took, how dangerous it can be when you get that bad in your emotional stability, and some ways that you or people that care about you can help you manage that numbness and maybe pull you out of that state? I'm bipolar depressive and I unfortunately have become very emotionally numb a number of times this year alone, and while I have a couple of strategies to try and help to feel again, they don't always help

2024-01-05 04:08:52 +0000 UTCHave you heard watching this movie is an early part of many intro to child psychology educational classes? Did Pixar hope for or intend dual purposes?
Deb
2024-01-05 04:03:05 +0000 UTChow different was the first version of the film to what ended up making it to theaters?
Jary Gonzalez
2024-01-05 02:48:09 +0000 UTCMy ten-year-old would like to know some of the thought that went into the design of the emotions, most particularly why is Anger short?
Kristin 🦦
2024-01-05 02:36:05 +0000 UTCWould love to know anything more about the Mind Workers design. (My favorites are The Forgetters, Paula and Bobby. Aaand now the TripleDent gum song is playing in my head, lol!) Any insight from Jono or Alan on Dream Productions? The Mind Workers in all the costumes and each dressed for their various jobs... just brilliant.
Wendy Darling
2024-01-05 02:36:00 +0000 UTCIn everyone else's mind the emotions are all the same gender, but Riley has a mix. Was that intentional? Thank you for the movie! Makes me cry every time. ❤️
Jasmynn Huish
2024-01-05 02:09:03 +0000 UTCEverybody knows and notices first thing of the emotions are the colors. How did you come up with the shapes of them?
Austin Bell
2024-01-05 02:00:00 +0000 UTCOne of the biggest emotional moments when everyone cries is when Bing Bong sacrifices himself to help Joy and Sadness get back to the controls. I, myself didn't cry but have always found that an incredibly beautiful moment that clicked in the right way for several reasons. To me, in my head, it made sense and it felt as a natural part of maturation process from childhood to puberty/teenage years because that particular fantasy no longer served Riley a purpose (unlike, for example, the Bieber teenage boys which do serve a purpose in Riley's development at this point), but I still think it was a brilliant way to move the plot along while still making sense from a neurodevelopmental and psychological perspective. My question is, how did they come up with that or how was that decision made? Was that always planned out as Bing Bong's destiny? Did they create Bing Bong for that purpose only or was he created for fun and it just happened as they moved along and left it because it made sense?
Kate Ackerley
2024-01-05 01:53:39 +0000 UTCThere are thousands of emotions that stem from just a few base points, such as regret which is between fear and anger but rooted to both, how did you decide which emotions to personify and which to leave as character traits to the characters personalities?
La Aoife ☀️
2024-01-05 01:43:51 +0000 UTCHow do you intend to keep a PG rating given that Anger now has access to an entirely new vocabulary?
Michael Mol
2024-01-05 00:40:32 +0000 UTCAre they proud of themselves that I ugly cry every time I watch the movie?
Reimus
2024-01-05 00:04:53 +0000 UTCWere there any happy accidents or impromptu mistakes during the making of the film that they decided to keep?
Saige C
2024-01-04 23:50:11 +0000 UTCI saw a presentation/ interview with director Pete Docter and psychology professor Dr. Dacher Keltner on a Zoom for the 2021 Wisdom 2.0 Summit. Could you share how their collaboration influenced (informed) a more accurate representation of the core emotions and the creative expressions of those emotions in Inside Out?
Stacy A
2024-01-04 23:30:30 +0000 UTCWith so many emotions to choose from, how did you arrive at the ones used in the film and what led to the decision of which ones would have what roles/levels of importance?
Neocelestia
2024-01-04 23:29:53 +0000 UTCWhat kind of frameworks did you consider including for Riley's emotional expression? Where their any you considered including but couldn't for whatever reason?
Bryan
2024-01-04 23:23:45 +0000 UTCWhich emotion was the hardest to cast?
TheBasementWeeb
2024-01-04 23:20:57 +0000 UTCI saw in theaters (trailer for Inside Out 2) that there is a new emotion coming introduced. What ideas, events, personal lived experiences (from you or the creative team) initiated the creation of the second film? (Was this part of the plan before, during or after you worked on the 1st film?)
Stacy A
2024-01-04 23:08:31 +0000 UTCHow did making Inside Out help with tapping into the emotions of characters in movies you made moving forward?
Drug Princess
2024-01-04 23:06:47 +0000 UTCDo you think Riley’s emotions are male and female because she’s genderqueer? Everyone else’s head that we see inside has all female or all male emotions depending on their gender, but Riley doesn’t.
Shawniper
2024-01-04 23:01:43 +0000 UTCJust thank you for the emotional intelligence that you helped audiences with through this movie. I know for me growing up it meant a lot to see it be explicitly made clear that it was OK to be sad and that sometimes memories can be two emotions.
Rachel Jones
2024-01-04 22:55:42 +0000 UTCWere there any big “aha” moments for you personally while making the movie about psychology, emotions, or your own growth?
Rachel Jones
2024-01-04 22:54:33 +0000 UTCWhat was the process for deciding on the core emotions specifically for a child? With Inside Out 2 coming out soon, are some of those new emotions runners up from the first film that you decided fit better for someone a little older?
Rachel Jones
2024-01-04 22:52:53 +0000 UTCAre there any memories from the movie that represented someone on the team’s real life memories?
Donut_Worry
2024-01-04 22:44:32 +0000 UTCAlso, why did you choose hockey to be Reilly's favorite sport? As a HUGE hockey fan, it made me so happy.
Ayesha Ali
2024-01-04 22:42:03 +0000 UTCAs I think about the movie, I realize that's primarily a two person story, Joy and Sadness. How did writing it differ from other pixar movies that are usually packed with characters (except Up, I suppose)?
Ayesha Ali
2024-01-04 22:41:31 +0000 UTCDid they console therapists to better portrait the interactions between the emotions?
Lexi Noctura
2024-01-04 22:34:00 +0000 UTCFor the mental emotions are they related to the emotions like is anxiety related to fear
Josh Jones
2024-01-04 22:21:55 +0000 UTCAre you satisfied when people start crying during Pixar movies? Damn you Pixar 😅
Kirsten
2024-01-04 21:54:25 +0000 UTC“Thirding” this! Ever since this was pointed out (can’t remember where), it’s been a very good question.
Emily Snell-Salvaggio
2024-01-04 21:47:36 +0000 UTCThere will be one in the second movie
Justine . PERRIER
2024-01-04 21:47:02 +0000 UTCIs Joy a metaphor for the peace and naivety of (most) children? Also why the parent's emotions all look the same but Riley's don't? Is it because she's growing up and need to figure out who she is/wanna be?
Justine . PERRIER
2024-01-04 21:45:50 +0000 UTCComing in June this year Emily!

2024-01-04 21:43:10 +0000 UTCDid you have to institute a swear jar for Lewis Black, and if so, how long did he take to fill it?
Dr. Gonzo
2024-01-04 21:38:53 +0000 UTCSeconding this, I too want to know the thought process behind Mom and Dad's team leads, so to speak
Magnus Taliesin
2024-01-04 21:35:22 +0000 UTCFor the creators: For Riley's confession to her parents at the end of the movie, did that scene experience any major changes to convey the emotions just right for such a pivotal moment? For Alan and John: As professionals, do you think that the team did a good job at conveying what Riley and her parents were going through in that scene? For the creators, Alan, and John: When you saw that scene in its final form, as parents, what were your initial thoughts while watching it? Bonus question: Who's idea was it for the war room inside the dad's head, because that was hilarious!
Rob Foster
2024-01-04 21:27:51 +0000 UTCMy kids always ask where the anxiety character is because it's different than fear.
Emily Powers
2024-01-04 21:24:48 +0000 UTCIn preparation for the sequel, how did you go about determining what new emotions to introduce into the world? What is your response to those claiming that 'anxiety' from the trailer is not an actual core emotion?
Richard Mead
2024-01-04 21:24:22 +0000 UTCWhat was the most intense scene to write both mentally and emotional. And what changes did you feel happen for you as you wrote and produced this movie?
Nanala Jean-Baptiste
2024-01-04 21:22:01 +0000 UTCWas it purposeful that we see no windows in the other characters’ minds out to the islands or memory storage, only Riley’s?
Kristin 🦦
2024-01-04 21:21:10 +0000 UTCWhen designing the emotions was it intentional that Joy has different colors while the others are primarily shades of one color?
Kristin 🦦
2024-01-04 21:19:48 +0000 UTCInside Out has led me to ask the question about what other’s leading emotions are using the emotions shown in the film. It seems Riley’s two leading emotions are Joy & Sadness, for example. So I’d love to know what everyone would say their two leading emotions are?
jordanthewizard
2024-01-04 21:11:21 +0000 UTCIts amazing that you guys will be able to have them on the show! What thought went into picking the voice actors for the show? Did they already have the voices in mind as they were creating the characters?
Happynapper 69
2024-01-04 21:10:06 +0000 UTCTHIS. I watched it with a high school psychology class I taught, and I was able to really get mileage out of it because it was so real and accurate to actual psychology. Because it's Pixar, it's easy to just think, "oh, it's just a kid's movie", but it's not just a kid's movie! There is real thought and research that went into this, and I would LOVE to know that process went.
Ian
2024-01-04 21:10:04 +0000 UTCQuestion: was the implication of anger being "chief emotional officer" in dad, and sadness respectively in mom, to say they're the most commonly felt emotions? Or is it more similar to joy in Riley, where these are the responses they find most solution oriented and take over by way of just being the most "useful"?
David Lemonds
2024-01-04 21:08:41 +0000 UTCAnd take on the appearance of the parent. Does that refect the development of the adult personality?
Kristin 🦦
2024-01-04 21:07:19 +0000 UTCWhat kind of research did you do to make this as accurate to the human experience as possible? How long did the research take?
Opal Evergreen
2024-01-04 21:06:15 +0000 UTCMy biggest question is about confronting sorrow. I understand not trying to suppress it and hide so it festers and becomes other emotions as showed in the movie, but as for the importance of sadness, should you not try to avoid it as much as possible in life. Try not to feel sad or movie on from you sorrow quickly
Mr Happy 897
2024-01-04 21:04:41 +0000 UTCWhat was your inspiration to make the movie, and was it the same inspiration that drive you to continue with a second movie?
Virginia Gallehawk
2024-01-04 21:03:47 +0000 UTCThis movie has been groundbreaking in my mental health journey. Was that the intent and how is it expected to impact the second, much-anticipated installment?
Angie
2024-01-04 21:03:17 +0000 UTCI'm a Psychology professor and I love how they (per a past interview) intuitively happened upon the core emotions we really use in Psychology. What excited me more though, was that they showed how trauma and depression can work when anhedonia (loss of joy!) leaves us only anger to operate with ... and how when that is no longer enough, people can fully dissocate from their emotions. How did they come up with that because its so personally and clinically accurate.
Lynda GB
2024-01-04 21:02:28 +0000 UTCWould you consider a TV series based on the film, in the likeness of Baymax or the Zootopia series?
LG Alfonso
2024-01-04 21:02:00 +0000 UTCGiven that it’s been almost 9 years since the release of Inside Out, what has been some of the most memorable feedback you’ve received from people who’ve seen the movie?
Prim
2024-01-04 21:01:59 +0000 UTCOoo that's a good one!
Angie
2024-01-04 21:01:09 +0000 UTCA lot of adults connect deeply with this movie despite the obvious target audience being children. Was the emotional response from adults expected or was it an unexpected bonus? How does this make you feel?
Alexis Popko
2024-01-04 21:00:10 +0000 UTCIf Riley had special needs would that have changed your way the emotions look?
Amber Chase
2024-01-04 20:58:57 +0000 UTCAnd btw, every Pixar movie makes me cry !!! You guys rock 😂
Jennifer Redmond
2024-01-04 20:58:28 +0000 UTCWhy do Riley's parents have emotions that are all the same gender while Riley's are different?
Kate Larson
2024-01-04 20:57:49 +0000 UTCWhen Joy and Sadness worked together to turn Riley’s memories into the bittersweet ones they became, did that almost bring about a new character? Or are they now pretty peaceful teammates?
Jennifer Redmond
2024-01-04 20:57:40 +0000 UTCDo you believe Riley could meet Bing Bong again? As in immer child healing.
Roknad Hornadl
2024-01-04 20:56:29 +0000 UTC-How did they come up with the concept of the emotions? -How much was based on actual neuroscience and how much was artistic licence? -Do they have any insight in the process of the score. I love the music. -I used the film once with my 5th graders to talk about emotions. Are there tips on how to incorporate this film into school? -How would the inner life of a neurodivergent person differ from that of neurotypical person (might be more of a question for Jono) I hope those are not too many questions. This is my all time favourite Pixar film. I cry every time (even in class 🤣)
Darmoyn (Jonas)
2024-01-04 20:56:24 +0000 UTCI can’t wait for this episode 💗your channel is now one of my comfort shows🫶🏼😭 My question would be what was the inspiration behind bing bong? Did any of the creators have an imaginary friend like him?
Gloria Vargas
2024-01-04 20:56:14 +0000 UTCWhat were some unexpected discoveries made during the movie making process? I've never made a film, but I imagine that even though there's a script, plot, storyboard, directors, producers, actors, animators, etc. that there are still some unplanned yet pleasant happenings that make the process more rich and fulfilling.
T.J.
2024-01-04 20:56:11 +0000 UTCHow did the idea and character of Bing Bong come about? Was there anything personal from your life that was implemented in the creation of Bing Bong?
Trevor Neri
2024-01-04 20:56:07 +0000 UTCWhy did they limit to only 5 emotions, and how did they narrow it down to those 5? Also, the other emotions in other people's minds are depicted as looking like the individual (mom, dad, clown, teenage boy, popular girl, etc), but Riley's emotions vary in not just look but also gender. Is there any intention behind that?
Jacob Sias
2024-01-04 20:55:16 +0000 UTCI love this movie and so I’m super excited!! “Are you happy with how the film turned out? Was there anything excluded from your original vision that you regret?”
Carissa Cunningham
2024-01-04 20:54:51 +0000 UTCHow did the idea for this story come about? What was the inspiration? Very excited for this! Thanks for all you do CT team!

Drew Cornog
2024-01-04 20:53:20 +0000 UTCCan’t wait for this episode!!! Knowing how thorough Pixar is in their research, I’m curious to ask: what steps were taken during the filmmaking process to ensure that Inside Out represented childhood development in an accurate way (eg, how certain emotions emerge and intersect during early adolescence)? For instance, were there any books or experts that were vital for them to consult when writing the screenplay?
Ian C
2024-01-04 20:52:50 +0000 UTCWhat’s your favorite part about making the movie? How does it compare to your least favorite part?
Aracelis Santos Torres
2024-01-04 20:52:40 +0000 UTCI have one. What inspired the creation of this film? 🙂
Raiyu Lilliputian
2024-01-04 20:52:34 +0000 UTCI would love to know the reason why Riley's parents are "led" by different emotions than joy. Cause moms Main emotion is sadness and dads one is anger. Would love to know if there's a specific reason. For example Depression, anger issues, sth like that. All in all I love this movie so much. My therapist loves it too and recommends it to everyone ♥️. Also can't wait for the 2nd one 🥹♥️
Veronika Gschwandtner
2024-01-04 20:52:29 +0000 UTCWhy did you choose specifically these 5 emotions to be represented? And what almost made the cut?
Dirk Ewers
2024-01-04 20:52:10 +0000 UTCWhat was the thought process behind the “wardrobe” design for the emotions and picking their “genders”? And do the emotions have emotions inside their heads since Joy cries, how deep do the emotion layers go?
Vanille’s lost hearing aids
2024-01-04 20:52:10 +0000 UTCWas the concept of Inside Out at all inspired by IFS (Internal Family Systems) therapy?
